All publishers care about nowadays is creating the next big Battle Royale to sell their micro transactions in. Or selling Battle Passes.

With almost every big series now, standard team vs team multiplayer has taken a back burner. Developers are spending much less time developing a well rounded multiplayer with lots of content, now they spend most of their time crafting Battle Pass content and focusing on Battle Royale instead.

CoD comes to mind. Infinity Ward is spending so much time and effort with Warzone 2, they launched MWII with very little content. Season 1 isn’t even launching with much at all. The gameplay itself feels unfinished and like it needed extra time to tune things. Apex Legends, a very popular Battle Royale, designed by Respawn Entertainment. They’ve completely thrown Titanfall in the bin since it released, they have no desire to create a sequel even though the multiplayer got so much praise and people loved it. Apex is a cash cow like other popular Battle Royale games.

Halo Infinite receives very little content and it’s heavily rumoured that a Battle Royale mode is to be releasing - which means the latter is the reason for the former, the developers have had to take time away from multiplayer for yet another Battle Royale game. Battlefield has started to chase the Battle Pass/cosmetic system. The quality of the multiplayer has dropped substantially.

It is happening across the whole industry. Seems like no where you look now. We can’t just have a well crafted FPS multiplayer with love put into it, full of content from launch. They’re all just soulless Battle Pass grinder machines and/or advertisements for their Battle Royale mode.

I hope the Battle Royale trend dies off. It’s killing standard multiplayer games.
