Information on Kosmos
There are some fishy omissions* from the reporting of the recent satellite destruction, which got me digging a little bit. Turns out most of it is due to getting information from a state department briefing, rather than the DoD or NASA, with the state department journalists asking important state department questions such as "why is the state department briefing on this" and "have you filed a protest" rather than "where was it destroyed", "when did it break up", "how energetic was the break up", "did you detect a missile launch". Not a dig at them. Their job is to report on the state department.
Does anybody have any better sources on what actually happened? Could it have been a debris impact or propellant explosion rather than a deliberate test, with inter-department communication getting wires crossed? Are we sure of anything other than that a Russian satellite is now a cloud of debris?
*No reputable sources are saying a missile launch was detected, or that it broke up over or near Russian territory. They seemed to be dancing around the facts they couldn't confirm, but should be able to.
