Default The Legacy of Dominic Deegan II: Don't Be Clothed-Minded!

    Thread 1

Welcome to the second thread dedicated to The Legacy of Dominic Deegan, the sequel/continuation to playground legend Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire.

Six years had passed since the original run of Dominic Deegan, a webcomic in which Michael Terracciano, in art Mookie, wrote and drew the strongly anime-influenced adventures of Dominic Deegan, a mysanthropic Oracle who is smart, smug, deceptive, manipulative, always right and always good. Starting out as a rather minor, if undoubtedly capable, seer in a backwater village, Dominic was later called to greatness by the evolution of his family: his brothers, both revealed to be immensely powerful mages, one as a healer, the other as an evil necromancer; his father, a pink-wearing rockstar and swordman extraordinaire; and his mother, Miranda, an archmage recognised across multiple dimensions and the director of a school of magic whose power is best described as the fantasy equivalent of a carrier strike group (later, she will get another massive powerup).

Of course, being praeternaturally smart, Dominic gets to become a professor at his Mom's university. He also marries Luna, a suicide survivor shunned because of her fangs. As the comic scope gets wider and their social standing increases, both Luna and Dominic reveal themselves to be prophesied messiahs, respectively for saving the land of the Orcs and for stopping a recurrent transdimensional cataclysm.

The result of this power increase is a move from subtler plans towards blunt force, generating what has been known as Hulksiah, who will Smash Puny Sins (it also was an antecedent to Mookie's later Star Power, who, plotwise, is just a very strong, invulnerable girl that shoots laser beams).

These final years had some serious problems. However, the comic in general, while naive, is also charming, because it's hyper-personal. There is almost no filter between DD and its dreamy-eyed, overly enthusiastic author, Mookie; DD himself was born as an RP character of Mookie's. So we have these extremely idealised figures of family, love, and friendship, and all challenges ultimately are there to show that family, love, and friendship conquer all. We also have DD as an idealised teacher, a position in which being a know-it-all actually means being at the service of someone. Overall, through the comic, it's Mookie's various feelings that get their win.

Anyway, getting stronger and stronger, and faced by increasingly limited challenges, Dominic undergoes a series of comically exaggerated traumas and breakdowns. There was a strip in which Dominic reacted in horror to some porn he was provided with for a semen exam. Altered Ass, it was called -- its stars had been grotesquely modified by magic.

Alas, that's where we are now, reading Altered Ass. The Legacy of Dominic Deegan took its crude art style and, apparently, went for outright explicitly pornographic depictions of sexual acts between demihumans. The latest strip took pains to put aroused genitals in the center (and it's why I'm not adding a link). But it couldn't manage, for example, to show a face in correct perspective. The result is so disgusting, that I'll probably stop reading the comic. The Legacy never had an interesting plot or characters or dialogues. It has been an exercise in self-indulgence. And now it's a bridge too far.

    Arguably.

Wow. Did not expect such a lengthy summary of DD. I don't even remember that much.

That is the best explanation why I enjoyed the early strips of the original Dominic Deegan. During the early days of webcomics, DD stood out for consistent updates (which used to be every day, without fail) and Mookie's love of his characters. Even the villains were drawn with the enthusiasm of a 1980s cartoon. Overall, it was a fun experience to check out the the site and see a new comic every day.
    But now...

Pretty much sums it up. I suspect there are Patreon supporters who want to see that, but I certainly don't.

Now he looks even stupider than before.

Hopefully the next step of her plan is to saw off Snout's new horns and spikes and then sell genuine mongrelfolk horn powder as an alchemical ingredient on the marketplace.

Well, that's why I added that spyglass Spiderman strip -- I'm absolutely revulsed, but even the science of the revolting can become oddly enticing.

Also, straight from Mookie's blog: https://www.dominic-deegan.com/the-sex-is-the-point/ "The Sex Is The Point"

To tell the truth, using physical changes to underscore the transformative meaning of a sexual encounter isn't bad. The simple fact that Snout changed because of something that happened to him is a massive step foward. The way he didn't seem to change until now was really weird. It's understandable that being a deaf mute somewhat insulates him, but there are limits to that.

Thanks for the link to Mookie's blog. It not only explains the current direction of the comic, but also gives me enough information for me to dump this webcomic altogether.
This is the part that frustrates me:
The choice to show an uncensored sex scene, as well as numerous depictions of nudity, is a direct response to the years and years of uncensored violence I depicted during the Oracle for Hire years. Never once did I hesitate to draw mutilations, decapitations, and showers of blood when there was a fight, but I always censored sexual intimacy and natural nudity. Whether that’s a commentary on how our society glorifies violence and shames bodies is a discussion I’m not qualified to lead, but looking back on my own body of work I decided it was time to change what I proudly featured and what I censored. The Legacy will feature very little violence and no gore, while openly displaying nude bodies and consensual sexual intimacy. The Legacy is, for me as its creator, a conscious choice to be as artistically opposite from the Oracle for Hire years as I can while staying true to the story, the setting, and the original cast’s own legacies.
As a creator, Mookie can do whatever he wants, but what I liked about Dominic Deegan is that the main character was not a combatant! Dominic did not resort to violence to solve problems, and the violence that did occur was by villains and other "evil" characters.
Instead of building off of that foundation, Mookie decided to remove both dialogue and violence, and replace it with WTF storylines and artwork that I don't want to see. Count me out.

The most disturbing part of that blog post to me is the knowledge that it's been two and a half years since this comic started. How the f*** has it been that long?

Otherwise, I feel rather neutral about the whole thing. I could complain about Mookie's hypocrisy in trying to do something here in the name of artistic growth while staunchly refusing to grow as an artist, but I, honestly, don't care enough to get mad.

So this happened. I never thought I'd write that abut this comic, but NSFW

I'm not comfortable with this. Snout may be physical an adult, but I perceive him as very child-like in mind. And not like an 17 year old, but maybe 13 or 14.

That's actually something I consider very damning for the comic. Almost nothing of what has happened matters. Everything happens by author fiat, and leads nowhere. If there is a plot, it's drowned out by irrelevant filler. Even this sex scene is now being drawn out, going back to the usual self-indulgence and lack of focus. And the worry is that, even after the embarassing ordeal of reading through this scene -- which already lasted for a week and might last one or two or three more, remember Snout being bored? -- it might ultimately lead nowhere.

If it's just a flashback, then the obvious question is: what was the point of the sex scene? He could have had a flashback just by lying in bed.

The result is so disgusting, that I'll probably stop reading the comic. The Legacy never had an interesting plot or characters or dialogues. It has been an exercise in self-indulgence. And now it's a bridge too far.

    Arguably.

I've not been keeping up with the Legacy of DD at all, gave up around 3 comics in despite finishing all of the original DD.

Reading this summary I was thinking for a moment, like ... no this can't be serious right? Did DD actually turn to straight up porn?

... Yeah I just looked at the last 5 or so pages. Wow.

I think it might be something like "having sex with someone who previously smeared you in hallucinogenic slime then held you underwater may trigger flashbacks of that time she smeared you in hallucinogenic slime then held you underwater".

It's most likely a flashback, the panel of Snout underwater seems to be a copy-paste from the old strip.

The message also seems to be that it's okay for someone to cause your friends emotional pain as long as you think they're hot and they're willing to put out.

It's not looking like a flashback now. I'd still like a clue as to what it actually is.
The end of what Son? The story? There is no end. There's just the point where the storytellers stop talking.

I'd say the memory turning into the vision finally opening up after he got its key by banging the chick. Now Luna should be within his reach. No idea why; maybe the physical changes aren't just horns, and somehow interact with magic, or Maltak's natural magic. The tentacles could be a reference to the Natka, the Ork's dark-but-not-evil magic.
