Judging by the "RPG fantasy cameras!" note, it appears either Tedd or (more likely, in my opinion) Dan does not think "Shadowrun" or "anything by White Wolf" when he hears "RPG."

These are clearly rules that are suitable for Traveller games.

It could be a psionic species or piece of Ancients technology. Alternatively, it could be a Heroes Unlimited power.

Of course, it's funny reading some old Traveller adventures when they have to explain what a "computer password" is or the notable lack of security cameras.

    Since I was apparently unclear:

The fact that Tedd thought "this set of generic RPG rules mentions cameras" was off in a way that deserved note indicates that either Tedd or Dan has a limited-and-defined-by-D&D concept of "RPG." Someone who actually played RPGs and thought the projection rules were actually for RPGs would look at "this is how they affect cameras" and go "of course, that part's for games like Shadowrun and White Wolf games."

It's interesting to see Lord Tedd being finally referenced again. Maybe he'll speak to one of the main characters for a second time before 2100.

Pretty likely but also common enough that it's not like it's unrealistic. D&D is impressively monolithic outside of TTRPG spaces.

I was continuing the joke. But to be more serious.

The only game we have evidence Tedd has played is Cellars & Cockatrices (or whatever name Dan eventually comes up with), and as he was what, 12ish when playing it's highly likely he didn't play any other systems. So it's likely that he (plus Sarah and Elliot) still has that roleplaying=medieval European fantasy assumption, whereas Ellen might not depending on when the last year of NP strips took place.

Plus Eberron definitely has fantasy cameras.

You ever have a moment where something about a work that just wasn’t clicking for you suddenly snaps into place? That’s sort of how I feel about this

I had been thinking a lot of this was overly mechanical overcomplicated explanations for something that probably could have been a lot simpler, but if this is where that’s building too it makes a lot more sense

Agreed. The tendency to go in-depth on that felt weird and overexplaining, but... well, though the comic definitely still does a lot of overexplaining, but apparently at least some of it was slightly justified.

Do we really think it's a good idea to give Ashley the power to turn into a girl?

So Tedd used the Gauntlet to supercharge his ability to "see" again, right?

To try and se past the layers of reality?

Because the last time he did that he got a really bad headache and hen passed out.

Edit, Never mind, he didn't pass out and the headache probably came from the whale.

Still think he used the gauntlet though.

Huh, I was certain that Tedd was in a femme form for some reason, just with small breasts. I blame their hips from a couple of comics back.

Gauntlet backfire due to magic's rules not changing does seem like the most likely scenario.

Or gauntlet non-backfire, just attempting to get the whale's attention, but the acceleration had different side effects.

Dan’s comment, “If you're going to have a symbol for death, you probably don't want to mix it in with a bunch of unrelated things” reminds me of the words amortize, mortar, mortarboard, mortgage, and mortise.

Fun thing is that all these words (except maybe mortise) do etymologically come from the Latin word for death. Like "to amortize" is literally "to deaden" something, and so on.

In Japanese, family names are first, individual names are second. Nanase's mom's first name, her family name, is Kitsune. It's her second name, her individual name, that we don't know.

So I only just now realized that Tedd's new look as of this arc is the same "fancy" appearance from the Video Game Opnions NP arc.

The hairstyle the same but "fancy" Tedd had a gray shirt, wristbands, a nacklace, lipstick, rings on both middle-fingers and a choker (granted thos last three just sort of disappeared between strips). Also, a couple bra sizes.

The last is partially Tedd mostly being in male form at the moment. But honestly I'd kill for his ability to gain and lose a pair of C-cups at random (at least I think so, femme Tedd has a slightly narrower chest than masc Tedd, so I'd believe Bs). We also have to account for the differences between Tedd being at home relaxing, being out and about, and being all done up for a NP opinions arc.

It was definitely a trial run for a new main design for the character, a lot of the minor details that didn't add much but took time to render just got ditched, most of them within the arc it debuted in. Pretty normal stuff, honestly, although in any production other than an independent webcomic you'd probably iron out all that before anything got published.
