'Heh, never actually had to threaten anyone before, but it's not like he doesn't deserve it. So we going to looking for Tick and then see if we can leave in a hurry? Maybe his mates here won't care that much but maybe they'll take it personally.'

"I reckon a knife to the throat or the crotch should make him cooperative. He knows us - he knows we've killed his like before and can do so again..." Severin answers darkly. "And a swift exit is what Galeazzo wanted, so..."

Actually, what's the time frame for us leaving with the caravan? Did Galeazzo want to be going today or are we looking at another night at Inselberg before he's ready to go?

You arrive back at the caravanserai and Galeazzo looks at you with both annoyance and relief. "There you are, we were getting worried. One of the teamsters was jumped in town and robbed. I was worried the same had happened when you hadn't returned..." Galeazzo looks at the sun getting low on the horizon. He sighs. "I had hoped to get started as soon as the wagons were loaded but I fear it is too late to start tonight. We're heading out first thing in the morning."

[Haval]

'Sorry. We were held up talking with some locals.' Gabriele replies thinking of the guards at the mine. 'Did the one who was robbed get a description. Maybe we could have a word before we leave.'

Galeazzo points to a nearby tent and the two of you duck inside while Galeazzo waits outside. Bastien, the driver, is lying in his bedroll, in considerable pain. His face is bruised and swollen from a thorough beating. He cracks an eye open and moans a bit, before relating his story. Having some free time and coin he decided to pay one last visit to the brothel. Heading up alone, he had been waylaid by a group of three toughs, who had beaten him down and taken his coin. They had been angry that he didn't have a purse full of gold, and gave him a vicious beating, demanding to know which of the caravaneers were the ones with the money. He hadn't been able to answer and they slunk off, arguing over their meager haul. A while later, passing townsfolk had found him and helped him back to the caravan where he had been resting since.

"Can you describe any of them in detail? We're heading up to town anyway - maybe we'll happen to run into them and be able to show them the error of their ways?" Severin suggests.

"No promises, of course," he hastens to add.

[Haval]

Gabriele is not unsympathetic but at least the man was still alive. 'This is why you don't go anywhere up there alone. Even if you were trying to enjoy yourself.'

He describes the three assailants as best he can. "There was a big man, I didn't get a good look at him. He grabbed me from behind. The other guy, tall, youngish, dark hair and blue eyes. He worked me over while the third man, a skinny guy was askin' questions about the gold. I didn't know nothin' about it, so the others started gettin' annoyed at him, but then he put the boot in when I was lyin' down. Bastard." He gives you a vague description of two of the thugs.

"Well, we'll see what happens up there," Severin answers the man. "Ready to go, Gabriele?"

Could you give us a reminder of Tick's appearance? I want to say that he might be called skinny, but I could just be confused...

He's skinny, thin, greasy unkempt hair. Not grey yet. Leather coat, concealed dagger in his boot. Perhaps in his thirties, forties? Hard to say.

[Haval]

"Well, we'll see what happens up there," Severin answers the man. "Ready to go, Gabriele?"

'Yeah, let's go.'

It's dark, of course, with the campfires of the carvanserai behind you and the bonfires atop the mesa ahead of you, the two of you pick your way towards the path leading up to the mesa.

You arrive at the trail leading up to the top of the mesa and start heading up. As you pass the first switchback, a figure suddenly emerges from the shadows in front of you with a drawn sword. "Stand and Deliver," he growls, with his sword pointed at Gabriele. From behind, you hear the sound of footsteps and Tick's familiar voice chuckles, "These are the ones! I know it!"

Remembering something of what Murillo taught her Gabriele will move back and to the side so that the man in front of her would have to come to her if he wanted to use that sword. At the same time she'll try and get a look at how many people were actually trying to mug them. She's already carrying her shield in one hand and if no one actually tries to stab her she'll draw her sword with the other.

"Well, well, well. If it isn't Tick the gutless wonder. Figures we'd find you skulking about here. Are you the ones that jumped Galeazzo's teamster?" he challenged the bandit while unhooking his mace from his belt.

There's a big one in front of you with a drawn sword, Tick and another man are behind you with drawn daggers. They've got you sort of trapped on the trail. "C'mon, yer money or yer life!" says the big one. But Tick laughs and says, "They're too dumb to know they're beat. Get em'!"

"You sure you want to do this? Tick has a history of running out on his mates when they're bleeding out in the mud," Severin grunts at the other dagger-armed man. Keeping his mace ready, he equips his shield for extra protection and then snaps his mace forward at the man.

Severin acts quickly, lashing out with his mace. The bandit steps back and avoids the blow, and then slides in with his dagger, landing a solid blow (9 damage) to Severin's body. Tick, perhaps out of caution or simply cowardice, does not close in with Severin on the other side and can't hit him with his dagger. Meanwhile, the big bandit facing Gabriele lunges forward, slips past her guard and hits her hard in the leg (12 damage). He's a lefty, and Gabriele isn't used to fighting one. However, Morillo had once told her, 'If you're going to get hit, don't flinch, take the hit and hit back harder', and she does just that. Although the bandit parries her first wild swing of the sword, he isn't able to stop the second as she smashes her sword into the man's arm. He howls as blood flies and he drops his sword.

Severin grunts as the dagger manages to cut through his brigandine, but in the heat of battle he can't tell if it's a serious injury or not. The howl from behind him is more encouraging though.

"First blood to you longshanks, but it sounds like we're about to be even in numbers," he says with a nasty grin as he tries to get under the bandit's guard and break his kneecaps.

Gabriele can't help but cry out in pain. The strength of the man's blow had almost knocked her over. Of course he had managed to hit her in the one place where she was least protected. If she can, she'll try to step on his sword as she keeps her footing before trying to put the man down.

Tick and the bandit facing Severin try to pin him with their daggers. Despite being outnumbered, he manages to evade their blows. Tick's swing comes close, but Severin manages to get out of the way. The bandit calls out, "Breaker! You good, man?" Opposite Gabriele, the man stumbles back, wide-eyed, clutching his arm. He heads back into the darkness of the trail leading up the mesa.

Severin mutters something filthy beneath his breath as the bandit evades his attacks, but he continues to press forward.

Gabriele turns and runs to Severin's side, She tries to attack the bandit, but is not able to connect. Severin also swings hard at the bandit, but he avoids the attack and lunges back with his dagger and slices Severin on his left arm (7 damage). This leaves Severin open on the other side, and Tick brings down his dagger and cuts Severin's head (7 damage as well).

'Hey!' Gabriele shouts to get the second man's attention. She'll keep her sword and shield up without immediately trying to use it on him. 'What's your name anyway? Him I already know.'

He sneers. "Who wants to know?" He shifts to the side and feints with his dagger at Gabriele. Gabriele sees right through the maneuver as the clumsy attempt to distract her that it is. Meanwhile, Tick says, "C'mon, get her!", while trying to stay out of reach of her sword.
