I remember asking my first girlfriend what the French called the dish, if it was like the English term for English Muffins ('American Thingy').

But yeah, whether these names are actually accurate is pretty much random. English mustard is English, French mustard is not French.

The answer by the way is golden bread (pan dore) and things along those lines, since it originates in their country as a sort of quick and dirty ration for knights and such way back when.

*Well, advertised as pumpkin spice. Contained cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice but lacked cloves.

Back when I spent a couple weeks in Ireland, they salwartly refused to believe me when I told them that we did not call French toast "toast" and that what we called "toast" was the exact same thing they call toast.

French toast is called pain perdu (literally "lost bread", but more accurately "wasted bread") because it's normally cooked with bread that has gone stale and dry and can't be used for anything else*. Let it get damp in a mix of milk, egg and sugar and fry it on a pan and you've got a perfectly serviceable dessert! It's the one nice thing about two people both buying a baguette coming back from work because they thought the other wasn't going to.

On that topic, I've been trying to cut back on soda. Last week or so I've only had two cans of cola a day. Caught myself reaching for one and having to tell myself that I don't need it a couple times but otherwise it seems to be going well.

I mostly drink that zero sugar stuff that ain't got no calories so this isn't a weight thing, I'm just at the point where I'm a little concerned about how much caffeine is in my system at any given time.

No? Anonymouswizard said they recalled asking their girlfriend what the French called it and you said the answer was pain doré, but that's not what the french call it, that's what the French-speaking Canadians call it.

Random thought that popped into my head just now.

A soup. Start with chopped bacon and a pad of butter. When bacon is fried to a crisp, add sliced mushrooms and partially roasted diced potatoes. Once that's settled, add chicken broth, heavy cream, and kosher salt. Once boiling melt in a mixture of sharp cheddar and Colby jack cheese, then top with black pepper and white pepper to taste.

    Sound edible?

I like to think that unlike most Canadians, most of the French do speak French, so there's another item on the list.

    I used to grow pumpkins.

When I was a little kid, one year we just dumped the guts from jack-o-lantern carving behind the bushes in the front yard as fertilizer and unbeknownst to us there was still a seed in there. It took root and then every year on clockwork we'd have a pumpkin vine snaking up next to the front stoop.

I was just a kid and didn't really know much about agriculture, so most of what I did was sit next to the vine, check on it, and sometimes talk to it because that was around the time I heard the "plants react to sounds" things and obviously, these weren't ideal circumstances for growing pumpkins so while the pumpkins never really got that big. Mabe the size of a baseball, except kind of flat.

Since they wouldn't get too big before winter hit, we'd bring them in around Thanksgiving time and use them as decorations or centerpieces.

I don't know why I'm sharing this now. Just, something reminded me of the old house and I got to thinking of my pumpkin vine.

Today is my mother's birthday. My aunt got her a giant electric skillet. Good quality one, too. The kind where you can do all kinds of things with it.

Since Easter is coming up and my mom tends to do all the cooking during the holidays, she immediately asked "is this a hint?"

So apparently we're doing a big old thing of scalloped potatoes from scratch on Easter Sunday.

In all seriousness though, my mom loves these kinds of countertop kitchen appliances and uses them all the time so.

Sounds like a pretty neat gift. Also, anything that grays more scalloped potatoes is great.

My mom also got a brand new scale. Electronic talking scale.

...Turns out the old, possibly broken one was off by about twelve pounds.

So I somehow managed to lose a significant amount of weight without noticing over the course of two years and I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
