Ground rules: As per usual, we'll use approval voting - just say which ones you like, and they'll each get a vote each. You can suggest as many as you want, and they will automatically get a vote from you. If you want to change your vote, specify that you want to take votes away from a suggestion, because otherwise, I assume you just vote for the ones you mention. Highest voted one wins. I get half a vote, in case of a draw.

Also, I'm obviously stealing Jasdoif's idea of just listing who I think voted for what, because sometimes I just have to guess if you mean it or not. Please verify that your name is next to all the things you do want to vote for, and is not next to anything you didn't really mean.

Heh i think we all had at least one crush when growing up that was like that. Certainly a pattern I've noticed. Mine, (very early teens), was the Childlike Empress from the Neverending Story Movie. Given what i later found out happened with the actress i feel really bad about that now.

Ah, I see. I first encountered her with the video for "I Hate Myself for Loving You" on MTV, well into her solo career at that point, but I was also six or seven years old.

I had lots of very-young-age MTV crushes, across a rather wide range of woman performers. Joan Jett, Gloria Estefan, Belinda Carlisle...

You inferred it, and stated your opinion as fact.

Let me spell it out again:
Suppose I went to the circus. Suppose I was impressed by the elephants. Also suppose I was disappointed by the lions.
your conclusion in that case => MetroAlien must not know what an elephant is.
    That is the non-sequitur.

And even if I were to take you at your word, your theory is useless, since there is no way to determine what creatures the characters can and cannot recognise.
No, all that means is that your criticism of my theory is useless.

We also have not way to tell (yet) whether the "escape" was a spell-like ability, an item, a psionic power, arcane or divine spell, etc...
You don't call those theories useless, do you now?

We have no way of telling why the MitD doesn't leave tracks in the snow, but we're free to theorise until some options are ruled out for certain.

We can't tell for certain whether the crowd recognised MitD or not, therefore, same as in the cases above, I'm free to theorise about it.
(but we do have definite proof that multiple characters of wildly different backgrounds did, in fact, recognise it)

The show is described as The Unrecognizable IT. The public is NOT disappointed. If they had gone to see a show about an "IT" that "we don't know exactly what "It" is" and it turned out to be a lion, they would be disappointed. Just as they were disappointed by the follow-up act "the bearded woman" that turned out to be a dwarf woman.

Beyond this direct evidence, we can have further inferred evidence. For example, that RC approaches MitD by informing him that he, RC, knows what MitD is. If everyone in the public regularly recognised MitD, it wouldn't be a hidden knowledge RC could lord over him. It would have been shouted daily by excited children over and over "Look! Ma! It's a lion". Therefore, clearly no-one ever did recognise it.

This is what the text communicates. Unlike every other of your examples, there is no evidence to claim that everyone in the public had no issues recognising MitD, and significant evidence that they did not.

Quote Originally Posted by MetroAlien View Post

No, my criticism of your theory is that it rests on no positive evidence at all, and even if it were true - which it is not, it is clearly contradicted by the canon - we still couldn't do anything with it because we have been told we will never get a copy of the char sheets. So we have no way of determining what creature can be recognized by "everyone".

We may not know what exact power caused the escape, but we can handily ding creatures that have no access to any of the one suggested. Which as it turns out, are plenty of them. Therefore, it is still useful even if we cannot nail down which power it was. "Only creatures everyone can recognize" is useless because for all we know everyone in the charsheets has "expert in creatures capable of punching horses through walls because of a fairytale universally known by all children".

That's Dancer in the Dark. I believe the suggested thread title is a reference to the Bruce Springsteen song.

edit: I don't know how many Ween fans we have in the audience, but MitD XVII: Drifter in the Dark works pretty well, I think.

(It would be funny to have the bridge of Metallica's "One" as the title, but I don't think I actually want that.)

Also, you can add my vote to You may want to begin to prepare yourself for disappointment. I linked the comic so it's kinda-sorta in a way my suggestion.

I had such a crush on Pat Benatar. And one of my friends who bore an amazing resemblance to Pat Benatar.

In fact, I still have a crush on Pat Benatar. I think it was mostly the video for "Promises in the Dark" that did me in.

I'm not suggesting that as a thread title, by the way, even though it has the "Dark" in it.
