Spring & Autumn - In the Shadow of War
    春秋 - 战争阴影下
Book One: The Death of Dragons
    第一卷:龍之死

The Wabin Sea raged for eight days and nights, furious storms blowing from the wrathful winds reached as far inland as the Red Pavilion of the imperial capitol.

Lightning scarred the skies, shredding the cloak of night with claws of such brightness you would think it was noon.

The mountains of Xiongnu were shaken to their roots with thunderous roars so terrifying some said babes were born with hair white as snow due to the fright.

It was a storm the likes of which the Land Beneath Heaven had not witnessed in centuries.

Such was the lament, anger, and anguish of the Dragon King at the death of the Emperor of Wa, Tiandi Mizuten Yamato the Azure Dragon of the East.

It was only when the clouds subsided, and the veil of dark was peeled back to reveal the golden sun, her bright face nearly naught but memory after a week sequestered in the dark of the storm, that the second calamity befell the Middle Kingdom.

The peals of thunder gave way to the peals of the great Shibiela bell. The ringing cascaded from fortress to fortress, from city to city, from village to village and the news was grim indeed.

Longdi Liu Taizu the Golden Dragon of the West and Emperor of Shenzhou was dead!

A new fear set in. With the death of the dragons of east and west, the emperors of the known world were gone, and so too was the knot that bound the swords of the lands between heaven and earth, east and west.

The Treaty of the Dragons was dissolved. For fifty-seven years peace and prosperity had reigned.

Now the jade throne lay bare and old ambitions flared as rumours spread that once again the sight of armies were on the horizon and the glint of spears shone bright upon the borders.

Autumn was close to an end, and with it the first breaths of winter and the cold shadow of war.

The flame of the age of peace had died, and from its embers the age of heroes was rekindled.

    Chapter One: Blood & Oaths
    第一章:血與誓

Almost a month had passed since the news of Longdi Liu Taizu’s death had spread through the lands, as was custom there would 108 days of mourning before anyone would even deign to broach the topic of succession, as it would be a great offence to do otherwise, but the provinces were already ripe with rumour and speculation. Each kingdom was preparing their cases and factions were plotting, making alliances, and gathering vassals and kin. Like a game of Xiangqi, the proverbial pieces were being moved into position and traps lain.

Word had spread that Sun Chiang, the maternal uncle of prince Liu Ling was acting as regent until the subject of secession could ‘officially’ be broached and that he, with the ‘assistance’ of Furen Wuxuan, the Queen Concubine and mourning Empress, was handling the day-to-day affairs of the state. Even the farmer in the field and the fisherman on the river knew that her paternal uncle General Wu Guo, the Flame of War and Marshall of the Eastern Imperial Calvary took great umbrage that his niece was not given the tittle and authority of Dowager Empress. There was great concern that once the white banners were lowered, General Wu Guo would pay a ‘visit’ to the Red Pavilion, with his legion, to ‘lodge a complaint’ at the slight to his niece.

For now though the alabaster flags of mourning fluttered from every garrison, castle, outpost, barrack and city wall, and while they did, no officials, vassals or troops could move about until the Imperial gold and scarlet once again flew high upon the ramparts. Thus, all of Shenzhou held its breath, and many eyes turned to the southern sea, and Chaosu Dao with hope, for while the Dragons of West and East lay in their royal tombs the Glittering Goddess of the Southern Sea still graced them with her every watchful, and protective eye.

When your training at Mount Penglai had come to an end Zhou Xiangyun eagerly welcomed you back to the small village you had called home, the time you spent with your saviour was sweet but short-lived, as storm, the likes of which you had never witnessed battered the simple settlement.

Many lost their homes and crops in the deluge and fierce winds, and Zhou Xiangyun tasked you with accompanying the group of refugees to Chaosu Dao where they would receive help and the care they needed. Many were ill, having been stricken by the week long chill rain, and some were injured.

You had served Kanshou Dugoa alongside Zhou, mostly offering advice, council and medical care but had yet to officially take your oath, now you were en-route to the famed Temple Island to stand before the Glittering Goddess herself, Tiaoyueni. Letter of sponsorship in hand, you began the last leg of the long journey as you boarded the boat with a number of refugees from all over the kingdom. What awaited you, and when would you see Zhou again? These were uncertain and troubling times.

It had been a long and dry trip to the coast as you made your way to fulfil Master Hui Fei’s wishes. Dry in the sense that most settlements were either recovering from the storm of the century or abstaining from drink in 'respect' of the Emperor’s passing.

Your boots were full of mud and water as the week’s worth of rain had caused many rivers to overflow, flooding the lands. Autumn was at its end, and as the first bitter nips of chill filled the air, the sun grew pale and cool in an ever dreary and grey sky. The soggy and sullen earth would likely remain as such until spring.

Fate smiled upon you, as you waited for the boat at the crowded dock, you came across a kindred spirit, a man named Li Di who paid his respects to your deceased liege with poetry. Poetry and plum wine. You traded verses and sips from his gourd, and the warmth of good spirits, both from a jovial companion and sweet wine soon filled your chest and warmed your long frozen feet. Li Di stoppered the gourd as a large boat glided to the dock, the rich lavender banner with the pearl bridge and koi emblem of the Kanshou Dugoa fluttered in the breeze, as the grey sky split and an icy rain began to fall.

For nearly a month the you’ve all been busy repairing and rebuilding parts of the main temple and various shrines that populate the island, as well as going in shifts to check on the residents of the small islands that dot the southern sea. Refugees have been inundating the island and the small coastal villages are nearly at capacity. Used mostly in the spring to accommodate pilgrims the quaint settlements were never intended to house so many people at once.

Fortunately Tiaoyueni’s protective wards had held back most of the storm, yet it clearly took a toll on her, it would seem in the face of the Dragon King’s wrath even a goddess has her limits. For the last few days she has been resting, preparing for the latest batch applicants.

The turning of seasons was an auspicious time, and at the turning of each season the unsworn officially took their oaths to the Caretaker of Temple Island beneath the Bell of Truth upon the crown of Shao Liong Temple. The first batch of applicants had taken the martial trials, and the last batch were arriving today.

Yue Mai, Eldest Daughter of Tiaoyueni’s handmaidens had requested the three of meet her for a special task. Among the latest batch of refugees, and applicants was an Imperial emissary who had something of great import to entrust to the care and protection of Tiaoyueni.

The four of you were to descend down the mountain to meet the incoming ship and bring the envoy to Shao Liong Temple’s private guest lodgings. Yue Mai made it clear that Tiaoyueni didn’t want it know that their guest was here, secrecy was of the greatest import. It was for this reason that the three of you were hand picked.

Xin was to protect the emissary and make sure they safely reached their destination, Zhaogang and Ruku would facilitate the swift and efficient transportation, as you would not be using cable cars and would have to traverse the natural trails down and up the mountain. Jian Feng would ensure that secrecy and stealth were maintained, no one was to know that their guest was from the Imperial court. This was of vital importance.

Yue Mai gave you an empty silk lined lacquered flute case, the contact would have in their possession a jade flute that was the mate to the case, if anything other than the paired flute were placed inside it would not close.

The dragon’s handmaiden stood ready to provide any additional information should any of you have any questions about the nature of your task.

The storm had taken Liyue by surprise -- and a part of her wished she'd spent a bit more time in mastery with the elements, that she may stave it off for their village. Still, she had capabilities she didn't before, after apprenticing under the mysterious Yaoyu; she even found herself able to create a little elemental of earth to help dam the flooding as needed. Liyue finds her task of aiding for the refugees easier and that she was more capable of addressing the wounds and illnesses the plagued the people.

Still, she was hoping Zhou Xiangyun would pay a bit more attention to her, after she returned from Mount Penglai... she was perhaps hoping she'd see her in a different light, perhaps take a bit more interest in her. One day. Sigh. Well, Zhou's steadfastness and attention to work was one of her most charming points.

But now, Liyue had a different task - to head to the Temple Island ot meet the Glittering Goddess herself. She busies her time on the boat treating those who still needed to be treated; with a number of alchemical ingredients and reagents safely stowed away in her belongings, she could concoct anything to meet the needs of those who were ailing.

It felt good, to be able to make a difference.

Xin Taipang and Zhaogang made their way carefully down the narrow trail, their compatriots both more able and skilled at navigating at speed. Xin's armor glittered in the few faint spears of sunlight that managed to make their way through the oppressive clouds, her forked spear and shield safely stowed upon her back. As she moved along the seventh stairway, her hand tightly wrapped around the rope that guided and helped them, she glanced downwards towards the grey ocean visible below. "I worry, honored brother, honored sister, that we will be unable to protect the refugees below." she says, voice carrying out over the wind. "I speak not of it in the temple, lest we stoke fears unneeded, but there lies a ripe target for the coastal pirates. I can protect a small group, but not a brace of villages spread across the islands."

"I'd rather be out there" Ruko says, her hair tossed by the wind on the slope. She is sticking to the path, one eye on their charge and another alert for threats. She is equipped lightly, eschewing armor and restrictive clothes to focus purely on speed for protection. "But for now, we have a more important duty, honored sister."

She provides Xin with the respect that the warrior had earned, even if she wasn't otherwise big on formality. Besides, any place she could see was under her protection, as far as she was concerned. "Do you see the ship our charge arrives in?"

Before she left on the journey to this island territory, Ziyi bought an umbrella to prepare for the increasingly wet season. A sturdy bamboo umbrella, not one of those cheap canvas ones. It turned out to be a prudent decision, considering the out-of-season monsoon bouts filling the journey to these lands. A canvas umbrella would've met its demise weeks ago.

That's in addition to the dreary, famished journey she undertook. Ziyi is in the middle of a self-introspective journey to relative sobriety, granted. However, a cup of alcohol or two along the way would've gone a long way to counteract the increasingly chilly weather.

Thankfully, it seems the closer she is to her destination, the merrier the general mood of her surroundings becomes. This Master Li Di - a wine merchant, perhaps - sure knows how to lift the spirits with the right drink, pun not intended. While it's tradition, in her opinion, a hundred and eight days of mourning is too depressing. They need a happier kind of remembrance after thirty days or so.

Even the freezing rain cannot put a damper on Ziyi's mood. That's where her sturdy bamboo umbrella comes in handy.

"After you, Master Li~." Ziyi politely defer for the older man to board the ship to the island. She'll also offer him refuge under her bamboo one, should he has none.

She has no idea what the ship's emblem meant, but if no one's raising any concerns, it seems they're no pirates. Part of a local merchant fleet, perhaps?

Refuge Across the Sea - Liyue & Li Ziyi

The boat’s arrival is a welcome sight, as the rain begins to fall, the crew quickly lowers a wide plank, as men and women, most wearing the purple colours of the Bridge Wardens, deftly jump down or nimbly descend the planks, to begin helping the awaiting refugees and applicants board. There are many families, elderly and ill, these along with several small children are ushered out of the rain and rapidly cooling air into the ship’s hold ahead of the rest.

Liyue, you wait patiently as the crew of the Bridge Warden’s ship begin helping your patients board. As one of the hale youths you will be among the last to board, looking at the rain, you imagine that back on Mount Penglai the first year’s snow may have already began to fall. You notice a ‘father and daughter’ (Li Di and Li Ziyi) speaking at the bottom of the ramp and drinking as the last of the elderly are ushered onboard.

Li Di smiles at Ziyi’s courtesy, and a network of crow’s feet and wrinkles spread out along his wine flushed face, it’s then the slight traces of grey and white highlighting his beard suddenly seem more pronounced and a slight melancholy appears in his otherwise twinkling and jovial eyes, “I’m not a master…” he pauses as he takes another sip of wine. His other hand steadies the broadsword at his waist as you all begin to walk up the plank, “… these days, I’m just Li Di.”

He looks out across the ocean for a moment, “‘The chilly wind birthed golden dust in Autumn’s hour late, through torturous trails in mist they crossed the Sword Gate, Beneath mountains travellers were hardly seen, The imperial banner lost its gleam in the sunset scene.’”

He took a long pull from the jug and his brow furrowed as he tossed it to Ziyi, “keep it, it’s too sweet for this bitter tongue of mine.” he says with a wink. He exchanges glances with two older, men, scholars or doctors, from the appearance of their robes, who turn their heads to look at Li Di as he recites the verses, then continue down into the hold.

Once inside, despite the crowed quarters, and being out of the rain, there seems to be a sharp bite of cold in the air. The sound of the sea’s lapping against the planks is audible and for those not used to the sway and rock of the ocean its toll is almost instantly visible as passengers rush to buckets or look for port holes.

The pair of you take in the scene below, in the back seems to be a makeshift infirmary, where one of the two educated men spotted earlier drifts thoughtfully from person to person, looking at each in turn before kneeling down, speaking to some touching the foreheads or joints of others. Liyue nods towards the father and daughter duo -- Li Ziyi and Li Di -- standing in wait to see if they needed any assistance boarding the ship; it seemed that they were all right, though, so she does let them board and pulls up to the ship herself.

Liyue is dressed in a simple, but nice-looking mid-rise ruqun today, coloured snow-white in increasingly transparent layers, with a zhiling-style centre collar.

Her attention is, in turn, drawn towards the doctor in the infirmary as she reports there. She bows with clasped hands and explains: "Honoured elder, my name is Liyue, disciple of Mount Penglai. I would like to offer my services as a physician to tend to those in need here." She slacks her satchel to indicate that she's brought her own stocks of medicine as well.

She pauses, though, sensing the qi in the air -- her eyes are drawn to the young monk, sensing the internal energy gathering within his dantian. Then she looks back to the doctor. "... if I may be so bold, have I met you on the mountain as well? I feel as if I may have seen you speaking to Mistress Yaoyu."

Jian ranged ahead of the group some distance, scouting the way for hazards as well as for prying eyes. He dressed in dark silks, drab in appearance but carefully tailored both to quiet his motion and allow him to move freely. He didn't answer Xin's comment, not for lack of concern but simply to stay silent.

At their briefing prior to this assignment, he'd been all business. Once the minimum of formalities and questions of logistics had been taken care of, he asked "has a cover story and false identity for this emissary already been devised? We will need these, and a plausible reason that a refugee, itinerant merchant, or some such is navigating the trails rather than using the cable cars. Perhaps a natural philosopher, one with the wealth or patronage to hire bodyguards?"

Ziyi politely declines the offer of assistance by the young doctor on boarding the ship in favor of the less fortunate ones. She doesn't need help, and it seems that Li Di similarly requires none. The advanced age did not slow down his physical prowess. Perhaps all the wines he consumed helped on the front.

Once she's beneath a roof, Ziyi would fold her umbrella and find a solid surface to sit on. She'd offer the wine to the other passengers, but she's unsure if it would counteract the seasickness. Perhaps quite the opposite.

"That is only common courtesy, no? I know if my sifu would kill me if I ever addressed her without "Master." She answered Li Di, who weathered a bout of melancholy before his playful nature returned.

Ziyi barely managed to catch the alcoholic gourd thrown at her without spilling any of the content.

"Mmm, well, I do like Xuzhoufu. Thanks, but uhh-is this alright?" She said as she took a closer look at the strange gourd. Sweet wine of this kind doesn't come cheap either. Combined with his poem, Ziyi wondered if the man was a wandering poet who wrote under a pseudonym. Not many poets would sport a broadsword on their side.

"What brings you to Chaosu Dao?"

She'd also seal the gourd, an act of supreme falsehood towards herself. Or it was a conscious desire to better herself with less alcohol. Ziyi isn't sure which one, though she'd recognize that it will probably only take a gentle nudge to get her drinking again.

Tiger Carries Down the Mountain - Jian, Ruko, Xin

    Descending the Mountain,
The descent from the main temple down the mountain was one very few took in these last days. Using the cars seemed so much more efficacious. Yet, in the early winter morning, even in the rain and dreary grey skies, there was a forgotten beauty in the mountain trails.

The stair had long given way to well worn paths amongst the sparse, yet large trees, whether the work of human or beast couldn’t quite be known. The creaking boughs offered a level of protection from the rain, and bird song echoed through the chill mountain air as the three of you made your way in rather contemplative quiet.

It was unusual that Tiaoyueni was unseen for such a period of time, even when she patrolled the islands she glimmered like a shinning rainbow above the water which could be seen for kilometres away. Not receiving an assignment of such apparent importance directly from her left a feeling of unease in all of you. Yet none had the courage to give it voice.

“...I’m afraid of heights.” the doctor replied as he returned Liyue’s bow, a playful smile on his face, “despite that, I found Mistress Yaoyu the far more frightening aspect of Mount Penglai.” He begins to laugh, then catches himself, “Forgive me, Lady Liyue, I meant no disrespect to your Mistress, she is a good, and old friend. Please excuse this old man’s lack of good conduct.”

He motions for Liyue to approach as he indicates to a young girl who’s brow is cover in preparation, “if you would tend to Miss Hui I will see to Mister Xi, please feel free to converse while we work, It’s been some time since I have worked with someone. Especially as highly praised as yourself.” He smiles again at the young cultivator, as he deftly massages the swollen knee of an elderly man, “as I said Mistress Yaoyu and I are very old friends.”

Li Di, took a seat next to Ziyi, removing his sword from his belt and leaning it against his shoulder in a fluid and swift motion that betrayed one well practised and acquainted with a blade. His gaze seemed to quickly sweep the inhabitants of the hold, lingering for a few seconds longer upon the two older gentleman he had locked gazes with on the ramp, “I wish my daughters were as well mannered as you…” a hardness flashed in his eyes for a moment before once again melting into a mischievous twinkle, “… but youth these days…” he said with a playful smile.

“It’s blessed. Or cursed. Depending on how you look at it,” he said pointing at the jug. “As are all such drinks, they tame savages or make savages of the meek.” He lets out a small laugh, “my grandfather said he won it wrestling a mountain fox.” He looks up at the ceiling, “my grandmother said there is a scorpion in every fox’s gift.”

He smiled widely and looked Ziyi in the eye, “it never empties, like a sorrowful and regretful heart. Keep it, toss it in the sea. I’m not sure why I just thought…”

He looks back at those in the hold, lingering on the children laughing and playing with the kitten. “It’s been in my family…” He shifts his sword from his shoulder to across his legs, “you remind me of my daughter so, I thought maybe you should have it.”

His eyes flick once more towards the two scholars, one sleeping the other speaking to the young doctor, “I’ve come to repay an old debt, and fulfil a vow.”

He laughs again, “besides, my house is now at the bottom of Longwei River. So now was a good a time as any for a pilgrimage.”

"... ah, no, none taken," Liyue chuckles heartfully. "She can be quite uncanny, can she not? It is true, when I first came to the mountain, as if guided by a strange and unseen force, I found her quite frightening as well. Yet I knew there was something important I had to learn upon that mountain..."

She nods and looks just a bit humbled as Shi Tianlin notes that others praise her skill. "Oh, I am yet still perfecting my art. She seems to have strange, yet important designs for me. I am certain I will be back before the end of my lifetime. But if you would not mind, I would hear of your past experiences with the Mistress...?"

Liyue notes the cultivator's art. Zhuohou Xing... fire aspected, much like Zhou Xiangyun. Then she turns to her charge, Miss Hui, smiling as she begins to triage her needs. "Hello, young miss. My name is Liyue, a doctor. Could you tell me how you're feeling today...?" she speaks reassuringly, while inspecting the girl's covered brow gently and for any other signs of abnormalities. Ziyi was taken aback at Li Di's little story. He might not have stated it loudly, but she managed to read between the lines. Her expression darkens for a few seconds, similar to the man before it settles back to a smile. There's still a lingering taste of bittersweetness on it, however.

"If the gourd is this amazing, I should share it with others then." Ziyi said, while at the same time closing its lid and eyes the other passengers. "Well, once they overcome their seasickness, perhaps. Me, I think I had enough for today."

Talk about making savages of the meek. She doesn't know if alcohol's the root of the storms ravaging the countryside thanks to what she did, but it's as good a time of introspection as any.

Before she could fall into a spiral of depressive contemplation, however, Ziyi slaps herself awake. Literally.

"If the daughter received a gift, then she should offer one in return, yes? Need a massage or anything of that sort, Master Li?" Ziyi said with a grin, seemingly flaunting her defiance in the "Master"-address aversion. "I might not be as good at it as Ah Mei, but I'm still better than most, I think."

Still, this many people in need tried to go to the island. There must be something extraordinary there. Before long, Ziyi finds herself stealing a glance or two at their imminent destination.

    "The island's that amazing, huh?"

Refuge Across the Sea - Liyue & Li Ziyi

Shi Tian replies as you both tend to your respective patients, the smile on his face is evident in his voice, “Your Mistress and I have known each other for a long time, before you were born I would imagine. We share a profound interest in the healing sciences, the limits and potential of the body, the internal arts… and from time to time she consults me regarding the esoteric qualities contained within. The admixture of yin, yang, blood and flesh. There are those attributes and skills that are cultivated, and some that are innate and inherent in the blood, one’s lineage, gifts or burdens of ancestry.”

The girl you tend to has a high fever, likely some water borne ailment, you’re able to bring her fever under control, she seems to stir slightly, yet drifts between sleep and delirium. Most of those you’ve treated these last weeks suffer from similar symptoms. The flooding and rain at the onset of winter and the exposure to elements by those made homeless has taken a hard toll on the people.

‘Master Li laughs at the offer of a massage, “No, not today.” he rotates his shoulders a bit, “I think that,” he says tapping the jug, “has done wonders for these old joints.” He sits up a bit, once again shifting his sword to his shoulder, then turns to look out of one of the small windows, “there,” he says indicating Ziyi should look, “that’s the mouth of the Danshui river, you see that large bridge, there over the entrance, that’s the Longkomen Bridge, Dragon’s Mouth Gate.” He sits back down leaning against the wall, “Ziyi, you’re going to apply aren’t you? That’s why you’ve come.” his voice carries a hopefulness mixed with a tinge of sadness, “you’ll pass the trial, I don’t doubt that. The most amazing thing… on this Island. When you take your oath. You’ll see her. …”

It’s not long before the ship glides beneath the great bridge, huge silk banners flutter from its sides, each bearing the sigil of a leaping koi beneath an arched bridge, the emblem of the Bridge Wardens. As the ship comes to a stop and the sound of the anchor is heard the crew descends and begins moving the cargo from the hold and helping the elderly and infirm up and out of the hold.

As you all disembark you all exit onto a large stone dock, huge lanterns line the way, and a regal young samurai stands at the end of the dock, in immaculate amethyst coloured armour, beneath a sturdy and well made umbrella.

“On behalf of our Mistress Tiaoyueni we welcome you to Temple Island, I am Kanshisha Shimamura, we request all applicants to make ready their letters of recommendation and to meet our officers there on the platform,” Shimamura, indicates a platform which appears to have whate looks like a large palanquin with windows attached to a rope of some kind. “for those seeking refugee please proceed to the boats this way, where you will be taken to your lodgings” he points to a series of large river boats where most of the luggage is being loaded.

Most of the refugees are helped onto the boats along with their belongings and the doctors Shi Tian and Liyue are tasked with ensuring they are safely moved. “You two,” one of the workers shouts to Li and Ziyi, “you look fit enough, help us with these carts.” Li nods to Ziyi and goes to help load the rest of the refugee’s belonging onto the boats.

While you are loading the last of the patients and belongings you hear a metallic twang, followed shortly by a spooling and cranking sound then see the car packed with applicants and their belongings rising into the air on a long cable which disappears up into the mountains. You see two attendants leap up onto either side of the cart as it ascends leaving the previously crowded platform completely empty. It’s at that moment that the refugee laden boats push off down the river, leaving the four of you alone beneath the rain.

“You still have that umbrella?” Li asks Ziyi with a grin, “and the wine?”

“Perhaps we should wait on that platform?” doctor Shi Tian suggests pointing to the covered platform, “And did I hear one of you mention wine?” the old man says with a smile.

It’s taken the entire morning to trek down the mount, although you can scarcely tell through the gloom and rain, but noon has past.

The quiet serenity of the winter afternoon is pierced by the metallic reverberating twang of one of the singnal lines as the metal cable vibrates, cutting through the cool mountain air, the thousands of small metallic bells ringing through the treetops. Meaning there’s a full car ready for transit. It’s moments later you can hear the sound of the car as it creaks its way up the mountain.

"I hail from the Milu tribe to the north," Li Yue expresses quietly. "Before a corrupt government official persecuted us with the belief that we carried demonic, cursed blood. I honestly thought it was just an excuse for him to enslave us, but seeing Mistress Yaoyu's interest and what you've just spoken, I'm not so certain anymore."

That's not terribly nice dialogue in front of their patients, though, so Li Yue focuses on her for a moment. She focuses on controlling her fever through the manipulation of a few of her meridians, and places a little pouch with her with some simple instructions with about two weeks of medicine for her to take. "The illness itself is not difficult to treat, but it threatens to return to these people if their living conditions do not improve."

Before long, though, they've arrived, and Li Yue packs her belongings and assists with moving those most in need of mobility assistance off the boat. Her letters... this is where they part ways, then. She makes a final round to ensure her patients can care enough for themselves, with the medicine she's given, and once she's satisfied, she moves towards the palanquin, to take refuge from the rain. She smiles towards the elder and daughter from before, bowing. "Ah, my apologies for not introducing myself earlier. My name is Li Yue, a doctor," she speaks to Li Ziyi and Li Di both.

Ruko follows along the edge of the Danshui river, suppressing a shiver from the rain and bearing out the discomfort of her rain-soaked clothes. The going is easy enough for her, even if the weather was unpleasant. She knew that her ring could fix her up, but so long as the rain was ongoing it wouldn't matter in the least. Her steps regain some spring as they finally approach the harbor. She sees the cable car leaving, spotting the familiar figure up in the dry comfort of a cable car. She gives a half-mocking salute for her rival for choosing the easy way. Or maybe the smart way. Ruko rarely took either.

Getting beneath the denser canopy, she wastes no time holding her ring out before her face, whispering the command word, "勇気 (yūki)", and a light sweeps over her, rendering her clothes and hair dry. She looks back at her comrades, a bit sorry that the ring only worked on her.

She eyes the older man, disgraced member of the Wardens, with suspicion.

    "Eh? A-Apply?"

The statement caused Ziyi to try and jog her memory. Shortly, she arrived at the part where her Master mentioned Tiaoyueni with a bit of jest. Now she doesn't know who the name belonged to, but if Master Li thinks highly of her, perhaps she had been taking this rather leisurely.

Then again, helping refugees for a year or so is a good cause, yes? It helps build character too.

Before Ziyi could ask for more elaboration, an answer to some of her questions came with the ship docking and the Watama samurai. Most Watama people she encountered were merchants, and she already saw two in relatively short intervals while on this ship.

"Coming!" She said, helping load belongings and passengers onto the cart. She had never seen a mechanical contraption like that either. There are many firsts today for her. With those also comes a test of patience with them having to wait for their turn under the rain.

"This umbrella's probably not big enough for four people, but if you don't mind standing closer, it could fit three, perhaps. Me, I'll use my coat." Ziyi said before handing the umbrella to Master Li and using her coat as a makeshift head protector until they arrived at the covered platform.

"You two still want to drink? Here?" She said to the two men as if she had never done that before, throwing stones in a glass house. She'd withdraw the gourd to pour servings anyway, just in case.

"Ah, likewise. My name is Ziyi, Li Ziyi. I came here because my sifu recommended me to...help? Yes, I think it was to help. She didn't elaborate much, come to think of it." She'd unconsciously separated the younger of the two doctors from the drunkards. She looked a bit too proper for that.

Maybe a thousand li is enough to escape her Master's scolding, but she's skeptical about that. Better safe than sorry.

As Xin and the tiger reach sight of the plaform, she reaches out one hand to brush gently against Zhaogang's coat, reassuring the animal with her presence. Despite the rain, the warden's armor glistens, the metal shining even in the low light that gets through the clouds. She gestures to her two companions. "He I recognize. Do you? Li Di. Oathbreaker. We should be cautious." she says, keeping her voice low before the quartet move to approach the refugees. "Master Jian, I suggest you speak and use the flute box to discover which is our guest. Zhaogang and I will watch for any trouble. <Zhaogang, try not to look too... hungry>" she says, her tone softening slightly from her typical formal and slightly stilted Zhongwen to a warmer Fanwen as she jokes to her animal companion. Zhaogang, for his part, looks up to his mistress and just stares.

"Thank you for the warning. I confess that this 'Oathbreaker' and his crimes are unknown to me," Jian admitted under his breath. "It goes without saying that this will make secrecy far more difficult. We will have to devise some way to get the holder of the flute to reveal it without giving it away to the others, especially to that one, but any of the others could be working with him."

When they came to meet their charges, he took the suggestion and led his group in speaking.

"Allow me to formally welcome you all. My name is Kwan, and my colleagues and I will be seeing you safely through the mountains. Would that we could have met under better circumstances, but circumstances should start to improve for you all once again." His clothing was less conspicuously inconspicuous now, still dully-colored greens and browns, but he looked more like a mountaineer in well-worn traveling clothes than someone who was actively trying to remain hidden. He put on the air of a practical-minded peasant, trying to get through his spiel as quickly as possible without omitting the minimum in perfunctory manners.

"After we are all introduced, I humbly beg that if any of you have a... condition relevant to our trek, such as a phobia of heights, please bring it to my attention before we set off. We can speak in private if you prefer."

Where River Meets Sea – Li Yue, Li Ziyi Jian Feng, Ruko, Xin

While the two doctors, father and daughter get acquainted over a few cups of wine, the sound of the raining failing on the bamboo slats of the platform’s roof produces a hollow echo in the empty way station. As the four of you enjoy sipping wine (some more than others), and familiarising yourselves, with one another, your collective attention is drawn to three new comers, one of whom is mounted on a large white tiger. The three, while armed don’t seem hostile, and look as if they’ve been travelling for some time.

The rain pauses for a moment while the wind shifts and the air is full of a cool mist as droplets are dissipated in a strong gust of wind. A cross wind blows and for a moment some of the last leaves of autumn swirl with a patchwork of dried cherry plum blossoms. The tiger pauses for a moment, its head raised and seems to sniff the air, its ears flick and flatten for a split second.

Then one of the men steps forward and informs you that they are to escort your group through the mountains.

“Perhaps a drink, and a bit of a rest before we set out,” Li Di says with a smile, beaconing towards the newcomers, “it must be cold, come dry off a bit, before we set out.” He offers a wide grin and points to a jug of wine.

The older man moves slightly to the side of the group and bows, “please, we are most appreciative and gracious Master Kwan for your protection and company. As I told my young colleague on the boat, 'I am afraid of heights' and would much prefer to walk under the protection of Tiaoyueni than trust that contraption.”

The older man steps down, lowering a long veil from his wide hat to help shield him from the rain, "if the trek is long perhaps this fine specimen," he indicates Zhaogang, "can help bear some of our belongings, also master Kwan, I am Shi Tianlan, a physician by trade, I noticed a limp as you approached, if I might examine you briefly before we set out?" with his back to the others he removes a green coloured flute from beneath his robes as he walks towards Kwan.

The wind calms and the rain resumes once again.

Li Yue has a gentle smile and a nod for Ziyi, as she steps closer towards the umbrella. "Thank you." She peers towards the other two men as they speak about drinks and has a quiet sigh... she imbibes a small bottle of what appears to be wine, though it has the particular power of an alchemical extract about it. As she sips, she replaces the liquid she imbibes back into the bottle politely, placing it back into the sash.

Before she can even introduce herself, though, three new figures arrive -- one with a white tiger, even. Goodness!

She chuckles and tilts her head, smiling at Xin and Kwan both. "My name is Li Yue, a doctor under the protection of the Kanshou Dugoa, from the Milu tribe in the north. I possess a letter of recommendation with me." She doesn't speak up about a condition, but does wonder as Kwan speaks...

It seems like Kwan knows Shi Tianlan, especially the way he calls out a fear of heights -- something Shi Tianlan had mentioned to her prior... and the doctor seems to be a bit strangely insistent. Why does Li Di seem so tense? There's an odd atmosphere in the air. She'd best be prepared just in case, her hand shifting underneath the long sleeve of her ruqun gently...

Ziyi had the self-control to drink responsibly with her new acquaintances. She wouldn't want to give any people she'll meet today the wrong idea about her. She's also sure she's still sober when the white tiger comes into view.

Fortunately, the newcomers are friendly enough. One of them is even nice enough to remind them of their potential ailment, perhaps from the experience of dealing with seasick passengers.

"As for me, my name's Li Ziyi, from many paces west from here. I also have a letter of recommendation...of a sort." Come to think of it, she never knew what her sifu wrote in the letter. It could be a recommendation letter, or it could be something else.

But here's how she knows she's still sober; she could still read the subtext of the conversation around her. The elder physician seems well acquainted with this nice Kwan fellow, but it's supposed to be the first time they met, yes? Perhaps the younger man was mistaken?

Ziyi turned towards Li Di, whose mood - after his initial pleasantries - seems to have turned strange. "Are you alright, Master Li?" was her response, though something seemed to have him tense.

The tension reminded her of one before a fight, but she'd love for the situation to prove her wrong. If that's the case, she'd probably need another sip of the wine.

Dismounting from the Tiger, Xin turns to the guests and gives a moderately low bow, eyes closing briefly as she bends her back. As she does so, her eyes flick to Zhaogang, concerned for a moment. "I am honoured to be your protector today. My name is Xin Taipang. Greetings, guests. This is Zhaogang, my companion and servant of the Silver Tiger". she says, indicating the Tiger.

She glances back in the direction of the cross breeze. "Please do not be alarmed, I am going to draw my weapon and shield. I do not expect conflict byt I must prepare for the small chance." she explains, her stilted and formal tongue quite evident, as she pulls out her spear and shield. She settles into a stance light on her feet, eyes and senses moving from spot to spot vigilantly.

"I must decline that drink" Ruko tells Li Di, not preferring drinking while on duty, nor entirely trusting a man known to be an oathbreaker. Where River Meets Sea – Li Yue, Li Ziyi Jian Feng, Ruko, Xin

Li Yue’s instincts and keen observation lead her to, very wisely, take preparations, there definitely seems to be more here than is being presented. Li Ziyi also can clearly see, despite courtesy and propriety that the air has the tinge of tensions that precedes most fights. Just as one can often feel a storm long before it arrives, Li Ziyi’s been in enough brawls to feel that almost electric static before the outbreak of violence.

    "Are you alright, Master Li?"

“Wha- no it’s just wow, I mean a tiger. Not everyday you know.” he looked at the trio, the tiger’s mount introduced herself, ‘ Xin Taipang’ was the warrior’s name and it seemed the tiger was Zhaogang. Despite her words of assurance it suddenly seemed as if Ziyi and Yue were not the only ones to mentally and physically prepare.

Meanwhile the doctor and Master Kwan walked a bit away where the seemed to be in private council.

You remove the flute case and open it, presenting it towards the doctor, as your keen senses scan the area, you are not physically aware of anyone watching you however you do feel as if you are being observed.

Shi Tianlan takes a fan tucked into his sash and places it inside the case, while still clasping the flute within his other hand, he nods his head slightly indicating you should attempt to close the case. He seems to want you to be sure as to the veracity of the method, you try to push the lid closed and it doesn't budge.

He removes the fan, and places a finely crafted jade flute within. You can see there is a very delicate caring of fish swimming at one end of the flute and what appears to be a dragon coiled around the furtherest end.

Once placed inside, oddly enough, the case seems to feel lighter than it did before. With a simple touch it silently closes, and the doctor looks straight into your eyes. If you’re not mistaken, they’re the eyes of man who has seen much, there seems to be a dignified sadness in them.

“Master Kwan.” he says in an almost forceful whisper, “I’ve something of very great import to entrust to your mistress...”

It's at that moment it occurs to you this man is a traitor.

It’s only a few seconds, but the silence amongst you all only serves to heighten the unspoken tension in the air, though the rain continues to fall with the same intensity, a constant drizzle, it seems deafening as it fills the space between you all. Then like thunder, the silence is shattered.

“Shi Tianlan.” a disembodied voice calls out into the bleak winter air. There is a strange affectation to it, those familiar to court recognise the accent and affectation popular in the capital especially amongst, officials, and recitation of proclamations. For others its reminiscent of the bombastic pomposity of many theatre actors. However, this voice seems heavy with hate and laced with malice.

Li Di stiffens, as his wine painted face turns ashen white.

“Shi Tianlan! Personal Physician of his Majesty Longdi Liu Taizu the Golden Dragon and Emperor of Shenzhou, you will surrender yourself for Heaven’s Judgment and relinquish that which you have stolen.”

There is a pause, “Scions of the Kanshou Dugoa you will return to you barracks and not interfere in matters above your rank and station.”, his voice drips with scorn and contempt as he mentions the name of your honourable order.

A man appears seemingly from the air…
    Spoiler: Shao Fu
    Show

“I am Shao Fu of the Jinyiwei.” there is a quick flick of his wrist and the flutter of paper, as a metal wushu dart ricochets off a rock and sticks into a beam on the platform a folded paper bearing the Imperial seal hanging from a green cord attached to the dart, "this is an Imperial decree authorising judgment to be dispensed in the case of Shi Tianlan. I expect full compliance."

Shao Fu is not a proper name, its the name usually used by members of the Jinyiwei authorised by Imperial decree to execute traitors. It means “wood cutter” they are essentially the Emperor's assassins.

Normally on your missions if you encounter Jinyiwei you're advised not to interfere, they tend to stay out your business and you typically do the same. “Professional courtesy”. You've only crossed paths a few times and none acknowledge the other as the primary function is spying and information gathering.

Imperial officials aren’t supposed to move during the time of mourning not only as a precaution to coup attempts but logistically, as there is typically no clear chain of command as the highest ranking members of the Imperial bureaucracy take orders directly from the Emperor...

Once again, only the sound of rain and wind is heard...

Ruko takes a defiant stance, stepping between the newcomer an the doctor."I missed the part where we take orders from a glorified assassin." she says, raising her chin slightly in challenge and to emphasize she's looking down on him and his degree. "I am under orders from revered Tiaoyueni, and only her word is going to stay me from those orders."

She wasn't the sharpest blade in the armory, but this seemed like a case to take the initiative. If she was in the wrong, she'd face a rebuke from her betters rather than fail in her duty.

The doctor steps back gently and procures her staff, clasping it with only one hand as she leans on it. "... mm," she hums in thought. "Passing strange, sir. We are only a month into the 108 days of mourning, and it is my belief that you take orders directly from the Emperor. Your words present some confusion to me." She narrows her eyes. "You act in a time when you should not."

Xin simply moves over until she is standing beside the doctor and 'Kwan', eyes fixed on this Shao Fu. "I regret to inform you that you shall not have compliance. Attempt to touch my charge and violence will be done upon you."

Swift Action to challenge Shao Fu (-4 to attack anybody except me, +2 to try and hit me)
Standard to re-establish patrol. If he actively attacks the good doctor he is getting stabbed. If hes within 20ft at least.

At a silent nod from Xin, Zhaogang starts to pad slowly out to one side, flanking the scene slowly and carefully.

Even a country bumpkin like Ziyi knows what the Jinyiwei is, if only because she heard people talking about it in taverns. The alias fits the image of shadowy assassins aptly.

In her current situation - with a bamboo umbrella in one hand and a wine gourd in the other - Ziyi doesn't look like a person ready for battle. That's what she wanted everyone else to think.

"I have little idea of what's going on, though-" Ziyi ever-so-slightly sidesteps over to the side, ready to intercept anything going Shi Tianlan's way. "Doctor was genuinely helpful to the refugees. Even if he stole something, can we talk it over first?"

She fully understands that trying to reason with an Imperial assassin with a decree makes her look foolish.
