I've been digging into the Stable Diffusion code, and I have a new technique - sort of. Using a different prompt for different sub-layers of the UNet part of the architecture, you can combine things by having one determine the macro structure and the other determine things like texture.

This was based on asking for a leopard's spots at the fine scale and a tree growing out of a cliffside at the coarse scale.

I really need to learn how to mess with Stable Diffusion

While I am on the one hand excited about the prospect of being able to generate custom, decent-looking, art despite my own lack of talent or training, I would be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about the wider implications for art as a whole. I don't think removing the human element from art almost entirely is a net win for anyone... well, anyone other than the tech companies that own the software.

I don't want to derail the thread though. I was interested and impressed to learn about this stuff.

It looks like the company behind Stable Diffusion may be doubling down on 'let's make open source versions of these things' as their niche. Or at least, they just managed to poach David Ha from Google as head of strategy, and he's pretty strongly in the open source everything and watch people play with it camp. So fingers crossed this won't be the last publically available iteration of this stuff.

And as far as the human element, there are artists specifically exploring these things as their medium with a mix of using the base models and manipulating them in various ways to express intentional effects. Was going to give a short list, but it became long. Mario Klingemann, Hannu Toyryla, Janelle Shane, Memo Atken, Refik Anadol, Mike Tyka, Tom White, Helena Sarin, ...

I mean, yes, but it doesn't really address my actual concerns overall.

Synthsizers in music. Yeah, spelling. But if you can keypress to get any note the, say a flute can produce, then why play the flute? Guitar? Anything? If you can type the notes & bits of a symphony in a synth and get the same sounds what happens to symphonies?

They're still around. New music using synthesizers is around. New music mixing them is around.

It's a tech change. Concerts were supposed to be replaced by vinyl is repaced by cd is replaced by streamed mp3s. Yet they're all here with their own niches.
