While Aanash returns to the field, both the wisps continue their electrical assault against the party, though they find the defences of Surge and Adam too significant to pierce while assailed by Adam's spirits.

    Spoiler: Map

Left wisp made their save vs. spirit guardians, right one failed.

They then both missed their attacks.

Adam is up for real this time.

Seeing the return of Anash, and the missing of the wisps, Adam steps forwards, attempting to bring both wisps and both skulls into the area of his divine guardians, before he attempts to ring the nearby wisp's bell once more.

Adam steps forward as his spirits continue their assault, and though the skulls resist in one way or another, their attempts to strike back are ultimately fruitless. The wisp is assailed by dark magic, but its makeup is of the shadows, so despite its gleaming radiance it is affected only partially.

Wisp fails their save vs. TtD but takes half damage due to resistance.
Left makes their save vs Spirit Guardians but fails vs paralysis, so stays locked down.
Right fails their save vs Spirit Guardians and then just flubs their attack rolls.

    Everyone except Adam is up.

Though the wisp evades the first hit from Surge, the second one cleaves through it and ends the magic manifesting it. Aanash's dread attack likewise brings his foe to an abrupt end, slamming the tiny ball of light into the ground before it dissipates into nothing.

Iron Witch and Witchling's blasts weaken the closest skull, allowing Honor to smash it to dust, and when Svek targets the paralyzed one it likewise gives Honor the opening he needs to bring the foes to a close. In a shower of quick successive attacks, four foes become zero, and you're left with the sweet taste of victory - though tinged by not a little bit of bonedust now entering the air.

Searching the remains of the room reveals mostly lots of records of what messages were received/transferred - all dated before the Mourning, of course - but there are a few things of notable value for you to recover.

Still spinning his weapon and crackling with red sparks, Aanash looks around at the dusty room. "No more? Bah! I barely got to sharpen my teeth after that annoying spell!" he laments, finally slipping the haft of his hammer into his belt. "However! This location would make an excellent forward base!" he declares, with a sagely nod. "Our watch would have a broad view, and we would have four solid walls around us." Not that he needs to stop for a rest anytime soon.

Leaving the looting to the others, Aanash walks back down below and examines the lower level for anything of interest.

With a sigh, the Witch eased her battered body down against the wall when a tiny figure launched itself at her. She caught the Witchling out the air, and favoured it with a small smile as it hugged her arm desperately. She eyed it over carefully, looking for any signs of damage.

"Easy, now," she murmured. "I'm alright. You didn't get hurt, did you? No? Good."

She let her head fall back against the wall. Her hat cast her face in shadow, hiding her expression beneath it's brim, but she sighed again.

In the aftermath of the fight, Adam breathes deeply, and exhales, before slowly moving around the room, letting his rotating holy symbols explore every corner of the room to make sure none of the undead survived. After assessing that there were no further threats, he looks to the broken remains of the gnomes, and shakes his head, sadly. "No one deserves to become undead like those. Everything that they weren't in life. Does anyone have an issue with hosting a short burial ceremony, to see if we can lay these souls to rest?"

Honor watches the last of the undead for nearly a minute, making sure there is truly no animation left in their form. Satisfied that they are truly done fighting, the warforged looks over his allies, seeing who is wounded, who looks like they need a rest, and who looks like they can press on. "There are wounded among us. Bandages should be dispersed. During this time, a short ceremony could stop these creatures from returning. Aanash is right. If we are to operate in the Mournland, places like this could be important sites of refuge. Eventually bastions like these can be expanded."

And then? His soul guest posited.

Cyre reforged. Stronger than it was before.

"Feel free!" Aanash answers Adam's request, taking a seat in one of the tower's chairs. Gradually, the manic aura leaves him as he takes out his block of wood to chew between his jaws. Clacking his iron teeth against it, he snaps his fingers at the equally iron witch. "And I will give hearty agreement there."

With approval to perform the burial ceremony, Adam gets to work preparing. He checks through the tower's records, hoping to find some information about the gnomes, before he heads downstairs, to build a pyre from the remains of the plant guardians. Once the pyre is built, he carefully moves the desiccated remains of the gnomes downstairs, and carefully lays them there.

The ritual is short and quiet, but nevertheless there's a distinct sensation that something 'right' was done by putting them to rest in such a manner. With the spirits dispersed and the bodies cared for, you each feel a slight divine touch

    4 Armor of Agathys (Radiant)
5 Heroism (uses Con instead of Cha)
    6 Shield of Faith

I'm also presuming you're going to short rest.

A review of the messages finds little in the way that would have changed the direction of the war - most of the notes are for the nearby town, with the occasional message of troop movement, but such things are dated months or years before the Mourning, and there's nothing to indicate there's anything new.

After taking a short break, you continue on the road towards Kalazart. A mile or two out from the watch tower, you spot four black metal posts standing in what looks to be the corners of a square, and from the rubble between them you can guess they were likely once a building of some sort, though it's a good distance away from any towns or villages. Whatever it used to be, it's little more than wreckage now. Flopping around the ruins of the building are, if your eyes are not betraying you, six sharks. They do not appear to be in any sort of distress despite being half a country away from the nearest ocean, nor do they appear to be struggling to survive in the open air. Their movements couldn't exactly be called 'graceful', but they are nevertheless seemingly surviving fine, though if you had to judge the tone of their flopping and flapping, one might say they look a little bit angry.

    The Break

During their short break, Aanash relaxes and chews his wooden block. As he watches the pyre outside beneath the tower, he feels a confidence brimming up from within. "Say. Svek, Witch, Surge," he speaks up, religion on his mind, after plucking the soggy block from between his teeth. "Do you 'have' gods that you pray to?" With Adam and Honor, it is fairly obvious from the symbols they dangle around.

    Sharknado Aftermath

"Ooh, look at them go," Aanash excitedly calls out, squatting and setting a hand above his eyes as he watches the flopping sharks in the distance. "I have never seen them out of the water before. Are they not kind of cute?" Bringing his hand down, he rubs it against the other with a metallic clinking sound from some of the metal plates growing out of his skin. "Kind of want to fight them. But I would also rather not kill them. Imagine a New Cyre with tamed land sharks! Ahaha, what a thought."

"...And may you find rest, in knowing that you did your duty, and you did it well." As Adam finishes the short, but genuine ceremony, he meets the eye of each of his companions, taking them in, before he steps back, from the pyres, and watches as the bones finish burning, and the pyre itself burns down.

Afterwards, he calmly walks along, leading the way down the road towards Kalazart, but stops as he takes in the strange sight before him. He blinks, twice, before reaching up to pinch one of his cheeks. "Sharks. I think these are a threat best avoided. They don't seem to be too fast on land."

The Progenitors shaped reality at the beginning of time, and the Prophecy reflects their divergent desires for their creation. It is the ultimate source of magical energy. Magic has the power to reshape reality, and the Prophecy is the ultimate expression of this."

"Other religions are a part of the Prophecy. Chronepsis is the scribe of the Progenitors. Aureon, Sovereign of Law and Lore, was the first prophet. Dragons used their knowledge of the Prophecy to defeat the Overlords in the Age of Demons. It will protect us again."

    The Sharks

"Yes. We should avoid these sharks. Nothing good can come from this. Let's try to not draw their attention."

He is still a kobold after all. No need to get into a fight we don't need to.

Honor stands vigil while Adam conducts the ceremony to put the soldiers to rest. Hammer head down, resting on the ground, he inclined his head and prayed in his own way as the ground was sanctified and the dead given their due. Then, when it is complete, he readies himself to leave. The others were right- they didn't have time to make this place useful. Someday, however... someday...

Later, With the Surprisingly Adaptable Sharks

"We should go around. These things should be dead. The fact that they aren't means there is more than meets the eye going on here. We have our mission, and it does not involve purging the Mournland of sea life." Honor gestures vaguely in a direction that would lead them in a wide arc away from the shark infested ruin.

    The Break Discussion

The Witch eyed the other tiefling for a moment, her eyes just suggestions of a glint beneath the rim of her hat. Finally she let her head fall back.

    "Not anymore,"
she simply said, and spoke no more on the matter.

She let her head fall back against the wall, only stirring for the burial ceremony.

    When Sharks Fly

Bruised and battered, the Witch did not regard the flying sea creatures with the interest she might have otherwise.

"Aye. Let's give them a wide berth."

She wasn't quite sure how to read the emotions of a fish, but if she had to say, the flying sharks seemed... displeased with their situation. She could relate.

Since the party opts to give the sharks a wide berth, whatever treasures were held in the ruins of the building - or in the bellies of the beast - will remain unclaimed, at least by you, and you proceed onwards, though the day begins to lengthen gravely and exhaustion threatens to overtake you should you continue on. If you do choose to rest, there is also the matter of the goodberry wine in your stash, and whether or not to make use of it.

You're maybe two more days from Kalazart at this point, assuming no major detours, but the cityscape is still hidden below the horizon miles away.

Honor assessed his squad mates. Evaluated their wounds. "We have wounded." Watched them move. Watched them breath. "It is time to rest. If only for just a moment. But then we could push forward. Into the night. Get to the city faster. What say you all?" He tried to be empathetic of sore muscles and bleeding wounds. He'd seen all sorts of failings of the flesh in his years of service. He didn't want any mistakes or unnecessary losses. But he wanted the city.

Adam frowns at Honor's suggestion, then takes a look around, soon spotting an outcropping that provided at least some cover. "I'm somewhat low on spells, and we do have a few injuries. Pushing on may make sense, but it is also fairly risky. We do have time constraints, and there is a rescue, but we won't rescue anyone if we die. We would have some cover at that outcropping." He points at the nearby outcropping. "Or we could push on, in hopes of finding something better. I don't think we need to take the risk, especially with a handy rest area nearby."

    The Break

"My master - in the academic sense, not the slavery sense - taught me a kind of pseudo-religious meditation technique," musing on his own 'religion', Aanash scratches at his chin and neck. "Sounded a little like your Prophecy, Svek. Not so much a god as a belief system."

    A Question of Rest

"You and I still seem quite capable," the tiefling looks Honor over, his metallic form free of any (fresh) dents. "So long as we take the front and the others safely back, I believe we could handle another fight. Maybe even two," raising an arm, he points it into the horizon. "I vote we march on and use what daylight we have left."

Svek finds little of note about the rocky outcropping - it is remarkably free of hazardous items and proves a suitable place to rest, but the voice to press on outweigh those advising rest, and so the party continues on. The terrain becomes rockier and rockier as you advance, growing into large crags that appear as teeth jutting from the ground, great maws ready to open and swallow you whole. It is through these giant rock teeth that elicit fears of lurking monsters greater than cities beneath your feet that you pass, the drab grey sky casting surprisingly deep shadows. Eyes dart here and there, seeking anyone who might be ready to launch an ambush, but you see nothing.

It is not from above your sides that you must fear, but below. As you make your way through a narrow conglomerate of stones, the earth beneath your feet begins to rumble and split. Stones crack with ear-splitting fractures sending shards of rock past your faces, and you're forced to guard yourselves for just a moment. A wound opens up beneath your feet, from which emerges a massive pincer-claw, and then a second, before the full body of an enormous warforged scorpion emerges. Its barbed tail drips with sizzling acid and despite what must be years lurking beneath the Mournland's stones its thick armoured plating looks in remarkably good condition, albeit smothered in brown-and-grey rockdust.

Surge acts immediately, loosing two arrows into the mechanical beast's side as he darts away.

    Spoiler: DC14

Warforged Scorpions almost universally are found on Xen'drik, not on Khorvaire. This prime example of ancient engineering most likely was 'recovered' by House Cannith for further investigation, and subsequently lost, though whether that was before or due to the Mourning...who can say?

    Spoiler: DC18
    Show

They are survivors of Xen'drik's ancient wars, and original instructions on how to create them have been lost and forgotten. Bereft of guidance and of minimal intelligence, these creatures hunt and destroy anything they meet. Lacking any direct will and an internal biology makes them resistant to mind-affecting abilities and poison, and their thick armour can deter many a physical blow.

    Spoiler: DC23
    Show

Rumours abound that the drow of Xen'drik in modern day are able to create imitations of the original Warforged Scorpions, though the ancient ones are actually purported to have held an individual intelligence and will, unlike the mindless ones the drow (supposedly) create.

Wandering through the rockier terrain, Adam continues to keep an eye out, growing nervous as the potential of safe rest lies further and further behind, and no other decent resting places emerge from the wastes around him, but with his eyes on the horizon he misses the closer danger. The large warforged, attacking. He staggers back, surprised for a moment, before he hardens his heart, and raises his shield into the sky, reflecting the the dim light onto the scorpion, where it seems to not fade, instead becoming brighter and brighter. "Even here, the light shines on new horrors!"

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show

Adam's movement is more cinematic than tactical, but...
He does case Faerie Fire, needing a DEX save(DC 16) for the scorpion, or all attack rolls against it have advantage, and it can't benefit from invisibility. The target square also covers the area to the north of the scorpion(20 foot cube, so the top row of the scorpion, and 3 more rows above that), so if there are invisible things there, they also get to roll.
