As a way of celebrating, I ask: What was the first movie that made you love pirates?

For me, it was watching Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone cross swords in "Captain Blood".

I think it must have been the Disney Peter Pan movie for me. Captain Hook has unbelievable swag.

That would be the 1983 version of The Pirates of Penzance, for me. Honorable mention to Muppet Treasure Island and Castle in the Sky, but those came later in life.

The muppets treasure island is a great movie, but I'm somewhat sour towards it, because that's all people can think about when somebody mentions "treasure island" nowadays.

And it's such a good book in its own right.
To me, it's the quintessential adventure story. From the plot hook, to the journey, to the "final" reveal...
A bona fide classic of modern literature.
The relationship between Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver adds the bittersweet complication in the otherwise straightforward narrative.

...Not only are Muppet adaptions of classic stories often very faithful, but Muppet Treasure Island has a great soundtrack.

Particularly "A Professional Pirate." Only Tim Curry can outperform the Muppets in their own movie.

'Twas the Disney Peter Pan for me. One of my earliest memories is watching Peter Pan duel Hook and thinking "holy heck, that looks badass, sword fights are cool, I should get a sword."

Sadly, no. There are lessons in the book that are just not in the comedy movie. Both are great, but the book is, as stated below:

Yes, it is. And that description should be enough, but it still bombed horrifically due to the expense of the animation techniques.

Shame, its actually pretty good story wise due to what it does with the two main characters and though expensive, it has a visual style that will never be replicated even though it looks fantastic. really good movie.

it was a passion project, and the theory surrounding it is, is that it was used as an excuse to end 2-D animation at Disney. also that it was set up to fail by being released alongside other things that were hard to compete with at the time.

Not sure I buy the theory - they made Princess+The Frog after, which did well, and Winnie the Pooh which did not. 3D is just flat-out cheaper than 2D to make.

That doesn't make Treasure Planet any less awesome, though.
