    You dismiss the effort and trek back down the hill; the hiding magic of the tower shimmering it out of your view not many paces past your departure. The hair stands up on the back of your neck as a chill wind blows that way; a clear and inexplicable instinct warning you that you have not seen the last of this dark wizard, and may have brought more focus to yourself than you ought.

    You are not long in waiting for this to become true.

    You pass the herdstone - the necromantic attachment is still absent, but it has not yet attracted a new herd - and push on further before fatigue forces you to camp. Aegis's growl draws you to wake - blinking, your bleary eyes register movement low to the ground amidst the trees around you...

    What's the plan? Feign sleep until you can get a better idea of their number and type? Burst into breaktastic violence immediately? Give me a visual perception roll if it's the first, or just roll straight initiative if it's the second!

    They rush you from the dark: pale, hairless men with feral eyes and gangly bodies either misshapen by birth or abused into that structure in their punishing existence. They are nude but for tattered loincloths, raising the baffling question of how such creatures survive in these temperatures without freezing. They might have once been men, you think. Almost certainly. And you have seen the warped things men can become in the form of various mutants. But the deformity of these men is mostly consistent: their fingers have extended into oozing black claws, though though seem to have retained enough dexterity to file their teeth to jagged triangles. Four crash into you, biting and clawing; one rushes to strike at Aegis; and another hangs back in the gloom, raking at the dirt and snow in delicate patterns you are too indisposed to try to identify.

    The ghouls tear into you, their dagger-nails biting through your leather and fur and setting you senses aflame with pain and then sickening numbness...

    Passed one toughness save, failed the other. You're down to 6/19 Wounds!


    Your reprisal is brutal - thrashing back against your opponents before they can gain the advantage of numbers, your own claws hew through one and leave him split and steaming in the snow. A blow almost killing carves into another, but the decrepit creatures show resilience and you are still facing two of the monsters while your strength ebbs away.

    With a bwruff! of sacrificial loyalty, Aegis darts away from his own opponent to engage yours. The move almost costs him dearly - the ghoul upon him strikes at his back, but barely misses - but the once mangy wolf launches itself at the ghoul you wounded, bears it down, and tears out its throat with a splatter of thick brown blood. Now the odds have shifted again - it's you and Aegis versus one of them, with another racing to catch up to the wolf, and the last of the five in the trees. Hedging his bets, that ghoul hisses and flees away into the dark while its fellows are still alive to occupy you.

    Oh no! Well, that 90 parry won't do it; so that hit gets through. I'll call that dodge roll the toughness roll, so that succeeds against the poison. Jorunn is down to 4/19!


    Your blade shears down the trunk of the ghoul in front of you, and gruesomely smashes its point through the creature's lower jaw in a backhand blow. It reels and totters back, spitting and coughing blood, alive but badly debilitated. Aegis snaps and weaves against the other, unable to land a bite, while it strikes back with mindless craving...

    Aegis's luck runs out. He is fast, but he zigs when the ghoul bearing down on him zags, and it is able to lay its claws on him. One hand grabs a fistful of fur and before the wolf can worm away, the other hand rakes such a bloody furrow in Aegis's flank that fur and blood splatter the ground in a long splash. The yelp that erupts from your lupine companion's throat is so pitiful and pained it hurts your ears. He staggers and stumbles, badly injured, now wracked with poison. The blood clawed ghoul can't afford to follow up, however - his own companion is similarly incapacited, leaving this one foe facing off against you...

    Aegis is hit twice, takes 10 wounds, fails one toughness roll for 2 more wounds, and is reduced to 0 of 12 wounds. He's just barely not critically injured.

    The other ghoul is stunned for 9 turns, so it's basically you and the last ghoul now!

    Aegis backs off, at your command; he makes himself still useful by, limping as he is, hobbling over to the stunned ghoul and mauling him to death. You are left opposing the last operative foe, who reals back as your blade bites into his skull and face. He screeches, and claws back with his best efforts...

    With a final furious effort, you carve through the ghoul's ribcage and it flops forward on to the ground, face first into the pool of its own splattered gore. Aegis whimpers a little, limps to your side, and licks at your calf. You courted the necromancer's attention, and almost paid with your life. Without Ortel here, you can make at best rudimentary efforts to manage your wounds, let alone Aegis's. But you remember the fifth of the ghouls, that did not engage - and with no sign of it, you can only assume it got away... and perhaps may return with more. With your wounds roughly bound in rags, you push on into the mountains between you and Krejj.

    You're at 2/15HP right now, and Aegis is at 0... So you're both Heavily wounded, but neither critically wounded, so that's something!

    You need to cross back over the mountains to be on the road back towards Krejj from this point. Give me an Outdoor Survival roll for finding shelter as you go - at +20 because you've been this way before.
