Adventures in Helnith: Assault on the Town of Ash (RPG)

Pokémon Center:

"Ranger, Nurse Joy informed me that you might be able to help the shadowed Pokemon out more directly that she can?"

“Yes, I brought some items with me that should help,” the Ranger fishes a little bottle out of his pocket to show you, and you can see the label reads ‘Vivid Scent.’ With good humor he adds, “If you decide to go charging after Shadow Pokémon again, there’s a little stall by Trainer Hill that sells these. Be warned, they need to be rubbed on.” ((So not something you can do in the middle of fighting the Pokémon you’re trying to de-Shadow.)) “You’re…Lester, you said, correct? I should introduce myself properly.” He puts the bottle away for the time being and holds out his hand for a shake. “Ranger Jon Wain, nice to meet you. Matt tells me you found something unusual on one of the Shadow Pokémon?”

Less shakes the Ranger's hand in return. "Pleased to meet you, Jon, and please, call me Less. Those scents seem like they could come in handy. I'll have to go gather some as soon as we finish talking." Less pauses for a moment, and then fishes out the bracelet found around the Honchkrow's leg, though he keeps the battery secure in his pocket. "I hypothesized that this was a transmitter, though I will be the first to tell you that my knowledge of electronics is not large. It had a battery in it at the time, and the light there" Less points to the light that went dark when he removed the battery, "was blinking. We were hoping to find someone with enough technical knowledge to render an opinion on my guess, and hopefully track the signal to it's destination."

[WindStruck]

"Who wants to check out the restaurant?" Flotsam says. "I'm sure they've got some nice fresh food there."

Predictably, many of the Pokémon would be quite agreeable to the idea of getting some more tasty food, considering the leftover waffles and pudding was probably merely like an appetizer. Flotsam extends the invitation for the Luxio to come along as well, and so she exits the Pokémon center, a small crowd of Pokémon following her.

"There it is," she says, pointing at the restaurant. She walks inside with the full entourage in tow.

[Feathersnow]

Akio is torn between eavesdropping on the important conversation and following Flotsom. He is dmfar from sure it's safe to wander away from the group, and, honestly, he and his team are hungry...


He follows the girl. "Wait up!"

Pokémon Center:

The Ranger examines the bracelet closely. “Hmm. No ID number, no serial number, no brand name. No contact information. It’s not a racing Pidgey band, at least.” The Ranger pulled out his Styler and pushed a button on it. “Viola, have you got a minute?”

A female voice answers back. “I have to get back on the line with Reed in about five, but I have a minute right now, yes.”

“I’m going to send you a scan of something a trainer found on a Shadow Pokémon. Let me know when you’re ready.”

“Ready now. Send it!”

Ranger Wain runs his Styler over the bracelet from several different angles before speaking again. “Did you get it?”

“Yes, I’m running it against the database now…I’m not finding an exact match. Best guess is it’s a GPS tracker, but it looks like it’s designed to broadcast off of the official bands.”

“So someone wanted to find the Pokémon again. Tenma’s work?”

“I can’t even tell for sure if it’s Bandra from here, but that would be my guess too. If you can bring it to the Skybreak Base I’ll make sure someone gets scheduled to look at it.”

The Ranger gestures to the bracelet. “Less, may I take this?”

Akio and Flotsam:

One of the wait staff recognizes the two of you from the Center earlier and escorts you to a table before handing you both menus.

((Today’s luncheon is a selection of fancy sandwiches! There’s a cheap tier, a moderate tier, and a pricey tier.

Being correct about the band was a relief. "Of course," Less replies. "i imagine it went offline a couple hours ago, at a hill about two miles away. It's possible that Bandra, or whoever is responsible, might send someone to check out why they lost signal."

The Ranger just looks downcast. “I wish we had the people to stake it out, but we don’t right now.”

[WindStruck]

Flotsam skims over the menu. "Hmm.. I don't know if this is anything my friends might like," she says without looking at Akio.

When the waitress comes back, she asks what kind of sandwiches are on the menu, and what kinds of juice there is. Or perhaps, she's wondering if there is any leftover seaweed, for sushi. Or just.. any other scraps in general too.

She indicates her Pokémon, that might not be able to read a menu very well.

If the Rangers couldn't help directly . . . Less shook his head. "If I was able to take some of the time myself?" Less sighed. He didn't know the first thing about staking out an area without being seen. "I imagine that the war has put a great deal of stress on your resources. There were some human remains on the hill as well, likely a victim of the shadowed Pokemon or Bandra. I was planning to return once the weather cleared to bury the poor soul, but I suppose you may want to investigate beforehand."

If there the ranger couldn't help immediately, that left only Less's fallback plan for finding out answers quickly. He took a sip of his tea and spent a moment in quiet contemplation. Perhaps one of his new acquaintances would have a better idea than deshadowing and earning the Honchkrow's trust.

[Feathersnow]

Akio awkwardly orders a coffee and waits to see what Flotsom is getting before ordering a meal. He releases Akitsu, the Trapinch. "Hey, boy, you hungry?" He tries to train the larva not to make a mess, he could be in this evolution for a while.

"Nurse Joy you can leave the shadowed feathered friends here strapped down for a bit, I have some purchased oils from the masseuse at Trainer Hill that might help cure them. Is Chansey able to massage and lend a hand or is she busy? If you're both free that would help as well, if not I understand and can maybe attempt to persuade someone else to assist." I say looking back at Less and Ranger Jon Wain. *eyeroll*

Pokémon Center:

"If I was able to take some of the time myself?"

The Ranger looks briefly surprised at the offer before saying, “If you’re serious, bring a friend when you go. And I’ll give you my number in case you get in over your head; I probably won’t be able to show up myself but I might be able to pull in a few favors if it’s a life-or-death emergency." He takes out a notepad, scribbles a phone number on it, and rips off the top sheet to hand to Less. "If you can keep an eye on the place until 8:30 PM tonight, someone from the Ranger Union should be available by then to keep an eye on the place.”

"I imagine that the war has put a great deal of stress on your resources. There were some human remains on the hill as well, likely a victim of the shadowed Pokemon or Bandra. The Ranger swore. “Yes, we’re going to want to do DNA testing and find out who it was if nothing else. How much of the body was left?”

"Nurse Joy you can leave the shadowed feathered friends here strapped down for a bit, I have some purchased oils from the masseuse at Trainer Hill that might help cure them. Is Chansey able to massage and lend a hand or is she busy? If you're both free that would help as well, if not I understand and can maybe attempt to persuade someone else to assist."

The Ranger overhears and answers before the nurse can: “I’ve got the oils covered Matt, hang on to yours; you might need them later. I could use your help putting it on the Pokémon if you want.”

Restaurant:

The waitress rattles off a long list of sandwiches, ranging from grilled cheese, to curry-and-rice, to egg salad, to peanut butter and jam, to cucumber.

The juices are of course tropical and include orange, grapefruit, Nanab, guava, pineapple, Wepear, and mango – all local fruit, seeing as not much can get into the region with Bandra attacking ships along the coast.

She says they don’t deal in ‘scraps’, but she can check if they have any Pokéchow if the young lady wants.

She also makes a note for Akio’s coffee and asks if he would like anything else.

Less will nod and accept the number. "I have little experience in stealth, but perhaps if one of you" Less gestures to Matt and Pinklady, "would be willing to accompany me, we could make a spectacle of ourselves training our Pokemon, while having some of our smaller Pokemon watch for observation?"

"I would also very much like to help with the oils. Many hands make light work, and I would like a chance to make a better impression on that Honchkrow. “If you want to help too, I won’t stop you.” The Ranger motions for Less and Matt to follow, and leads them into the back to where the Shadowed Pokémon are currently being restrained. The Chansey on duty look relieved at seeing the Ranger, and both nod when he motions for them to stay.

The Ranger pulls three bottles of the Vivid Scent from his pockets, handing one to Matt and one to Less, then pulls out what looks like a very old necklace, which Matt recognizes.

“I only have one Sacred Talisman, so we’ll do this one at a time. I’m thinking we’ll start with the Honchkrow, since it’s the most powerful of the three. The scent needs to be rubbed on the Pokémon, so we’re going to need to take the straps off first – if any of them wake up in the middle of this, we’re going to have a bad time. If you want to back out, do it now.”

Less will nod and whistle for Buck to come and follow. "I'm prepared."

[gorman]

"Hey that's ironic, I have one of those Talismen too! If we both use it on the same pokemon, would that double the effective usage?"

"I'll be happy to help with the stakeout slash training! I'll get ready while you all handle the massaging!" She responds before the massage group heads to the back.

Pinklady's "getting ready" consists almost entirely of taking a quick rest. She was still somewhat exhausted from her very active training with Sport earlier. She also takes the opportunity to operate the Center's PC to swap out Sport to withdraw her new Luxray... except she doesn't know how to operate it, so she asks the nurse for her help with it.

"Hey that's ironic, I have one of those Talismen too! If we both use it on the same pokemon, would that double the effective usage?"

“Unfortunately not, otherwise we could skip trying to import yet another Purification Chamber from Orre and just have the Geology Club dig up as many of these as they could find.” The Ranger undoes some of the buckling around the Honchkrow’s foot and wraps the cord of his Sacred Talisman around it instead. “All right, let’s get to it.” He starts carefully undoing the rest of the buckles binding the Honchkrow down, then pours oil on his hands and motions for the two of you to follow suit. “Be gentle and be ready to move fast if it wakes up.”

The Honchkrow, luckily, doesn’t wake up during the process, although there are a number of false alarms as it twitches violently several times. You can tell the Cologne has taken effect when the visible signs of Shadowing fade from its wings, tail and beard, although as the bird is mostly black anyway it’s not as visually obvious as it would be on a more brightly colored Pokémon.

One of the Chansey waddles over with an Awakening while the Ranger untangles the Sacred Talisman, then the Ranger applies the Awakening. The Honchkrow for a moment seems more confused than anything, and then flips itself onto its feet, fluffing its feathers. It glances around, peering at faces, then at the Murkrow.

“Don’t worry,” the Ranger tells it, “we’re going to clear your friends up next, just sit tight.”

The next Murkrow goes similarly – not smoothly, but nothing worse than a few scratches as it thrashes in whatever nightmare it’s trapped in until the Cologne takes effect and the Ranger wakes it up with another Awakening. The two purified birds then go huddle in the corner to caw quietly with one another, sometimes peering up at the last gurney like two kids trying to eavesdrop on their parents, and every now and then the Honchkrow mutters something that sounds like muttered (and nonsensical) human speech.

Meanwhile the three of you have unwrapped the last Murkrow and started applying the last of the Vivid Scent to it. It is eerily still in comparison to the first two…until its eyes snap wide, it flips onto its feet and launches itself at Less’ face all in one lightning-quick motion.

…but not as lightning-quick as Buck, who knocks his trainer out of the way. Both the Chansey start to Sing in an attempt to bring the last bird under control, and finally the already-purified birds pounce on their companion, the Honchkrow squawking in a loud, commanding tone punctuated by a discernable “Stand down, soldier!” to the pinned Murkrow.

And then the last of the Shadowing fades, the sudden stress of being dogpiled coupled with a very intimidating Buck nearly in its face being enough for the Murkrow to break through it.

The Chansey stop their song, the first two birds get off the third after a moment of examination, and Buck does his level best to shove his human out into the hall away from the no-longer-psychotic birds.

The Ranger, meanwhile, pulls out his Styler to scan the three Dark types. He nods to himself as he scans, mm-hmming to himself as he goes; one of the Murkrow reaches out to nibble the device with its beak and is summarily fwacked by the Honchkrow and then the last mm-hmm becomes just a hmm and the Ranger frowns, Styler hovering over the last Murkrow.

Then the Ranger collects himself and puts the Styler away. “Gentleman,” he says to the two of you, “thank you for your help. Ladies,” and now it’s clear he’s addressing the Murkrow, “I think you’re all fine but I’m going to have the nurse look you over. I’ll be right back.”

Pinklady:

The nurse blinks in surprise, but walks you through switching your Pokémon with the Center PC (it requires your Pokédex, for authentication purposes). ((Swapped out Sport for Blast Bolt.))

[WindStruck]

Flotsam ponders over the menu a bit, and she orders some peanut butter and jam sandwiches, as well as cucumber sandwiches. She also gets a serving of mango and pineapple juices.. and yes, she would appreciate if they had anything leftover they might donate to her Pokémon.

She sits there across from Akio, beginning to hum to herself. She plops King up into a chair, and has to help Hilda up into another if she's not going to risk damaging anything. Rascal sits in her lap, and Gypsy and Orion float to her sides. I guess that leaves the Luxio to stand by in a convenient sitting position.

"You know, I wonder if we weren't meant to bring everyone in here.." she says suddenly. "Oh well, as long as we all behave!"

Rascal begins tapping on the table with his horn impatiently. "H-hey! We only just ordered!" she says.

Less had never been a doctor or a masseuse, but rubbing the perfume into the shadowed Pokemon's feathers felt like some demented combination of the two professions. The Honchkrow's treatment went off without a hitch, and the first of the Murkrow's flailings resulted in a small scratch to the back of his hand that left a small smear of blood from the back of his hand to the wrist.

It was the third bird that nearly killed him. One moment there he was rubbing oil into the shadowed Pokemon's wing, and the next he was falling backwards, swatted by a massive paw. He hit the floor with enough force to leave a bruise on his bottom, but with his face and neck fully intact. That's the closest I've been to dead in almost forty years. The thought came unbidden. His heart was pounding, and he could feel a thin sheen of sweat on his face. But part of him wanted to move, to act. Less realized that the thought didn't strike him with fear, but with excitement. He had few regrets about the way he had lived his life, quiet and content in his house overlooking the ocean. But there was a spark to this, and edge that he found suddenly and inexorably compelling.

By the time Less snapped back to reality, he was being pushed out the door by Buck. Less wrapped his arms around the big dog and breathed out into his mane. "It's a good thing you're bearing your years better than I am, Buck. Thank you." A big paw wrapped around his shoulder for a moment, and pulled him close. That was all that needed to be said.

One more breath, and it was time. This was his best chance to get information about a Bandra base, which was one step closer to finding Emilia. "Right, friendly faces." One more inhale and exhale, and Less walked back into the room at a steady glide with Buck a step behind.

"Ranger," Less says, nodding to Jon as the Pokemon Ranger leaves the room, and Less approaches the Honchkrow and her flock. He had a couple bites of fruit left, that he had saved for this purpose. His instincts told him that meat would have been better, but would have been more difficult to find. Less squatted down and proffered the food to the largest of the birds. "My name is Less. I don't know how much you remember about what happened, but some of my acquaintances and I found you in the wild and brought you back here for healing. Something effected you, and drove you mad for a time. I think it's gone now, but I wanted to know how you were shadowed, if you are comfortable telling me." Less's voice is soft and low, the tone he had previously reserved for talking to bullied children. He wasn't sure what had happened to this Pokemon, if Bandra had killed her former trainer, or if she had already been released when Bandra found her. Either way, he intended to give this Pokemon his honest compassion.

How much should we be role playing our Pokemon too? I'm not quite sure if they're full NPCs, or partial player characters?

I can't help noticeably raise my eyebrow in confusion as Less kneels down and starts talking to the Honchkrow. However, as I've seen much stranger things, I don't ask and step past him out into the main room of the pokecenter.

Hmm... I suppose I better stop at the front desk and get the team healed.

The waitress takes your orders and heads back to the kitchen. She comes back not long afterwards with your drinks, and returns a second time with the food – two plates of little finger sandwiches, one of cucumber and one of peanut butter and jam, the crusts neatly trimmed and the bread itself speckled with herbs that compliment the flavors of the contents perfectly. There is also a big bowl of Pokéchow, with bits of dried Berry mixed in for extra color and flavor and a whole fresh Pinap Berry for a garnish.

She comes back after an interval to make sure you don’t need anything else before leaving to wait on another customer, then returns after another interval with the bill.

Less:

"My name is Less. I don't know how much you remember about what happened, but some of my acquaintances and I found you in the wild and brought you back here for healing. Something effected you, and drove you mad for a time. I think it's gone now, but I wanted to know how you were shadowed, if you are comfortable telling me."

The Honchkrow eyes the offering with regal dignity, then scoops most of it up with her beak before motioning to the two Murkrow to have the rest. (They pounce on it with obvious glee.) Only then does she reply, and then it’s mostly squawking Pokéspeech that would be incoherent even without the two Murkrow squabbling in the background over the remaining fruit. A couple bits of human language and other recognizable sounds come through:

…a beat you recognize as coming from a bit of dance music that was popular a decade or so back…

…a long mechanical sound you realize is intended to be a Tie Fighter after the Honchkrow follows it up with tsew, tsew laser noises…

…a particularly passionate bit of squawking ends with the Honchkrow putting a wing over her own face and shouting ‘I knew him well, Horatio!’ before she briefly (and furiously) attacks the gurney with her claws, and then mutters darkly ‘I’ll get you next time, Gadget! Next time!’…

…”side effects may include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea”…

…then another snatch of music…

…”what happened to ‘never leave a man behind?!’”…

…”I have seen the light!” and that appears to be the end of it, as she finishes with a little more squawking before settling down.

The nurse and the Ranger entered about halfway through, but remained respectfully select. Now the Ranger waves the nurse over to one of the Murkrow ((Murkrow A, the one that tried to attack you when you were applying the Cologne)) and she begins examining it. At first she looks concerned, then confused, before finally giving Ranger Wain a shrug and moving on to the other Murkrow and the Honchkrow.

Matt:

The nurse heals your Pokémon before the Ranger calls her into the back.

((It’s 4:30 PM, you have four hours before the group meetup.))

Less does his best to follow along with the Honchkrow's speech, nodding as she talks. "I can see you like movies, at least." Less takes a moment. "I think I followed some of that, at least. Stop me if I'm wrong on any particular. There was a a storm, of some kind? And you were ambushed by some kind of villains?" Less's voice is low and soft. "And then someone died? Or there was someone you thought you knew who did something terrible? Something you want revenge for? But you were shadowed, and experimented on, something strange you can't fully remember? And then they left you, before my friends and I brought you here? Is that close, at least, to what happened?"

[Feathersnow]

Akio orders pokechow and a cheap sandwich, based on Flotsom's order. Akio thanks her graciously.

[WindStruck]

Flotsam thanks the waitress, and she not only begins passing around the bowl of Pokéchow, but of course, the sandwiches and juice. She thinks some of them might want to try too. In the end, they all end up more or less sharing the meal (though Flotsam lets them all keep the Pokéchow to themselves).

Then, it's time to pay. Somehow, the bikini-clad girl conjures up money from somewhere, but perhaps her reserve of hyperspace inventory would be running out soon. Maybe Hilda was simply hiding some PD in her shell!

[Kareeah_Indaga]

Less:

"I think I followed some of that, at least. Stop me if I'm wrong on any particular. There was a a storm, of some kind?"

The Honchkrow nods, then makes a noise that sounds like Godzilla’s roar.

"And you were ambushed by some kind of villains?"

A nod.

"And then someone died?"

The Honchkrow looks downcast, but nods again.

"Or there was someone you thought you knew who did something terrible?"

This time the Honchkrow shakes her head ‘no.’

"Something you want revenge for?"

A very enthusiastic nod, followed by a cackle ending with, “I’ll get you my pretty, and your little dog, too!”

"But you were shadowed, and experimented on, something strange you can't fully remember? And then they left you, before my friends and I brought you here? Is that close, at least, to what happened?"

“Chevron one is locked in place” then a final nod. Meanwhile the nurse seems to have finished her examination of the birds, and the two Murkrow are pecking at the spot where the fruit had been like they expect more to appear.

The Pokémon greatly enjoy the food, Hilda and Gypsy managing to ignore the other diners and unfamiliar Pokémon long enough to make decent inroads on the finger sandwiches. Akitsu tries hard not to make a mess but with no hands and being somewhat top-heavy he can’t easily clear the rim of the bowl, so he isn’t entirely successful until the waitress brings him a plate to eat off of instead. Then he takes massive bites out of everything he’s given.

"Storm . . . a sandstorm and a big monster?" Less fumbles with his Pokedex for a few moments before saying, "A Tyranitar?"

When the Honchkrow nods, Less nods too. When the Honchkrow talks about revenge, Less will sit down fully, so he can look at the Pokemon on more equal footing. "Was it Bandra? Black uniforms, spiky purple 'B' on the shirt? They have hurt those I care about, too."

Seeing the Murkrow look for food, Less will look up at Nurse Joy. "Can we get a bit more food for our feathered friends?"

Less (earlier, with the Murkrow):

"A Tyranitar?"

A very big nod.

"Was it Bandra? Black uniforms, spiky purple 'B' on the shirt? They have hurt those I care about, too."

Another nod, then the Honchkrow unexpectedly hops up onto your shoulder ((60 pounds, remember! )) to preen your hair.

"Can we get a bit more food for our feathered friends?"

“Of course!” she steps out and a few minutes later comes back with Pokéchow for all three birds. The Honchkrow hops off again and is quickly distracted from any more questioning by the food.

There have occasionally been rumors of wild Tyranitar in the Shatterhigh Mountains, but another possibility exists: Selene has a Tyranitar.

Less and Pinklady:

The two of you head out to the outcrop where Less fought the Murkrow. The Honchkrow and the pair of Murkrow that were Shadowed are circling overhead; having been given a clean bill of health by Nurse Joy despite some…oddities…the nurse determined there was no need to keep them overnight, and the Ranger had suggested that their presence might smooth some ruffled feathers if the rest of the flock has returned to roost.

As you approach the outcrop, however, all three birds abruptly go silent and dive out of the sky and into the grass. The Honchkrow reappears shortly – on the ground, this time - and grabs Less’ shirt in her beak and tugs down, meaningfully.

Let's swap Poliwhirl and Flaaffy out for Taillow and Pinchy. Afterwards we'll bring Pyrofyl and Taillow out for some fresh air and to see how both are doing. Might also check, or place, the eggs inside of the incubator... As that might help them hatch...just a little.
