Oh yeah, that's them. At first, I didn't see Erik and Presto, but that has to be them in the scene immediately after. Could we possibly see Hank's Energy Bow!?

I somehow doubt that we’ll see them for more than background characters in this scene, so i doubt it… no Uni either

I know it's rule of cool, but I did twitch a little at the druid turning into an owlbear. Also mildly disappointed that they didn't go with a different skin tone for the tiefling character. Still, those are nitpicks and it looks like good fun. Especially enjoyed the "Bards are useless" joke.

Well, they did say that they kinda inspired from Critical Role, so she needs to look like Keyleth.

It's good. Like, actually a good movie, not just good for a DnD movie. The jokes were fast paced, the heroes and the villains were fun, and the action scenes worked. I highly recommend seeing the movie if you have even a little interest in DnD.

I just saw it and I agree with what you say here. You'll laugh, you cringe, you'll go "WTF?" and it's pacing never goes to slow.

And I, for one, love how they translated the Wild Magic Sorcerer into a story. Nicely done.

A couple of friends were planning to go, but canceled at the last minute. I’ll be there, but I can’t get there on time, so I’m going to have to ask them to start the movie an hour late.

It was a fun movie, not great, but much better than the last attempt.

    I really liked the paladin.

There was surprisingly little action in the movie, and surprisingly few easter eggs and in jokes.

Surprisingly progressive as well; they leave open the possibility of the black guy ending up with the white girl, and the barbarian doesn't shave her armpits. It is really sad that in 2023 that meets the threshold for a surprisingly progressive movie...

I would prefer if all genders were encouraged to shave, but yeah freedom I guess.

    Isn’t that most movies?

Arnold certainly shaved for Conan, as do all of the shirtless guys in Superhero movies.

Then I am even more confused with you mentioning the barbarian's unshaved armpits as an example of the movie being surprisingly progressive. How? Why? Is there a movement for the protection of sweat forests that I wasn't aware of?

Its just refreshing to see a barbarian woman go for a more natural look in a Hollywood blockbuster.

Traditionally in Hollywood movies women have perfectly shaved legs and armpits, no matter how little sense it makes in the setting. I remember this back in the original Planet of the Apes where humans had regressed to pre-verbal livestock but apparently the women still had access to razors (or maybe the apes were shaving them for some reason?). I remember in Year 1 they show a cavewoman with pit hair in one scene as a joke, and then the entire rest of the movie she (and every other woman) goes back clean shaven. This also applies to castaways of various sorts.

On a related topic, makeup and hairstyles will likewise match those that are in fashion when the movie was made no matter how little sense it makes in the setting.

Hell, at least in my country, TV commercials for women's razors don't even show any body hair. We see women shaving completely hairless legs with them.

Clearly TV commercials are showing us the woman of the future, completely hairless and leaking wiper fluid once a month.

Could someone who has seen the movie open a thread dedicated to actual reviews?

    (Thanks in advance)

Also, this discussion is caroming off into a strange tangent best followed in Friendly Banter.

That tangent *was* my actual review.

Honestly, there’s not much to say. Its a pretty average comedy with a few nice visuals, mediocre action, and some D&D references. Butter than the previous attempts at a D&D movie, but falls massively short of Guardians of the Galaxy (which it desperately wants to be) in every way.

I also really liked Xenk. He had the almost Leonard Nemoy like ability to go so far into the straight man territory that he crossed over into being the foil again. Did anyone catch why he was still young after 300 years thiugh?

A weird thing I'm noticing in reviews is people saying 'finally, a fantasy that doesn't take itself seriously'? What have they been watching? Spoofs are much more common than straight fantasy films.

Think over the last 23 years, what are the big fantasy TV and movie properties? Lord of the Rings (fairly serious) and Game Of Thrones (overly serious to the point of parody) are the two main ones. Then there's a host of smaller ones - the Witcher and Wheel Of Time fall into this group. Both quite serious. Semi-spoof campfests haven't really been a thing since the 90s.

Note that superhero films and such aren't generally thought of as "fantasy" by the average person.

Also Harry Potter, which my impression is takes itself relatively seriously (haven't read/seen it the original stories, but the recent game does, at least).

I'm a self-described nerd and fantasy lover (so not your average person) and I still wouldn't describe superhero films as fantasy. Not even Dr. Strange. The settings are different, the tropes are different...heck, I don't think Dr. Strange even falls under "urban fantasy", which has its own distinct tropes.

The MCU in particular is closer to sci-fi than anything, but even their full sci-fi offerings like Guardians of the Galaxy are comic book movies first and sci-fi a distant second.
