    Travis McGinty
    Former Lone Star Detective

    Spoiler: Image
    Show

    Spoiler: Backstory
    Show
Growing up in St. Louis, Travis McGinty always wanted to be a professional baseball player. Unfortunately, he was born a dwarf, and, while he could quote you decades of statistics by the time he was a teenager, he couldn't run fast or bat particularly well. On top of that, he was awakened, a gift from his mother, and he would always be accused of cheating if anyone knew.

His mother was awakened, a sort of neighborhood hedge-witch that helped the sick and infirm. She never had great power, but she did what she could with the gifts she had. His father was a cop, as his father was, and as he grew up Travis was raised to help the community and respect the rules. When he graduated, he followed into the family business and signed up for the Lone Star Academy.

While in the Academy, he received instruction in the use of his magical gifts for the first time. He developed his mind and his magic to be a careful investigator, and graduated with high marks. He entered the force on the beat, but it didn't take long for his talents to be appreciated, and he became one of the youngest detectives in the precinct's history.

He was partnered with an experienced veteran named Paul Crowe, and together they were often tasked with investigating crimes with a supernatural lean. They showed a good success rate with crimes that were hard to solve, and gained a good reputation among the force.

As the years moved on, Travis never lost his obsession with sports. His keen mind for patterns and statistics convinced him that there was money to be made on bets, and he quickly found himself addicted to the thrill of gambling. As time went on, though he won often, he always turned his winnings back over to the game, and eventually had debts. He was careful to keep his habits under wraps, or so he thought.

Six years ago, a case involving a high profile sexual assault was assigned to Travis and his partner. The investigation had come to show that the perpetrator was infected with HMHVV, and the suspect list was a who's who of St. Louis society. The pressure to get to the bottom of the case in the midst of a political mine-field chipped away at Travis, and, as it happened, it was the same time as the MLB playoffs. Travis made a big bet, and lost.

Somehow, one of the principal suspects found out about Travis' mounting debts. He was invited to a private meeting under the pretext of learning new information on the case, and he was offered a deal. The man making the offer claimed he could prove that he had no connection with the crime, and all Travis had to do was accept this proof and look elsewhere, in exchange for twice as much money as he was in debt.

Travis examined the evidence he was given, and it stood up, it proved that the man didn't have HMHVV. He believed the man was innocent, and he needed the money, so what was the harm in taking it. Travis talked himself into taking the bribe, and continued the investigation looking harder at the other suspects.

A break in the case came a few days later, one of the employees of the man that had bribed Travis was revealed to be a Banshee, and they had tampered with the crime scene immediately after the assault to throw law enforcement off the track. The Banshee named his employer as the one that had paid him to corrupt the scene, and that was enough to bring his partner and the other investigators down hard on that suspect, despite Travis' attempts to steer them away.

In the end, the man who had bribed Travis was arrested and charged, and he cut a deal in exchange for evidence of a corrupt Lone Star detective. Travis was exposed and disgraced. He was thrown off the force and prosecuted for taking the bribe. He served 18 months as a cop with no protection.

In the years that have followed, Travis his found himself struggling to keep any kind of life together. His family and former friends have all turned away from him following his disgrace, all except for his former partner that still believes that Travis was convinced of the suspect's innocence before he took the bribe.

His skills as a paranormal investigator have allowed him to find work on the streets. By day, he scrapes a living as a private investigator, but between his drinking, gambling, and propensity for pro-bono work, it's never enough. As a result, he runs the shadows. He tries to keep himself from falling deeper into disgrace and dishonor, attempting to find some kind of code in the chaos. Only time will tell if Travis winds up finding redemption, or a path into the abyss.

Travis is a dwarf occult investigator with demons. He's ex-Lone Star, and he served time for taking a bribe. He drinks and gambles on sports, both of which get him in trouble from time to time. He is aware of his weaknesses, and tries not to let them hurt others (he doesn't drive, for instance, and is a big fan of public transportation).

He is trying to make amends for past mistakes. In his day job as a licensed P.I., he is known to take pro-bono cases when he feels it is the right thing to do, tracking down missing persons and the like. In his shadowrunning, he tries to maintain some morality, using non-lethal methods whenever possible and staying away from the worst jobs.

He lives out of his office near the downtown area, maintains ties to his old Lone Star partner, and keeps an ear to the street and magic goings on in the city. He is known as a competent investigator, though his past gives him some notoriety.
'When you're lo-oo-ony, then you just don't give a fig.
Man's so pu-oo-oony, and the universe so big.
    If you hurt inside,
    Get certified,
And if life should treat you bad...
    Don't get e-e-even,
    Don't get e-e-even,
    Don't get e-e-even,
    Get MAD!'

    Spoiler: Description and image

As any ork, Nat is imposing next to most humans, and is covered in tattooed from the feet to top. If there are archetypes of 'brainless ork muscle' the mold seems to fit Nat perfectly, from body language to or'zet slang frequently used. No one bats an eye in surprise when her wired reflexes spins up.
For a much more observant user, the image cracks at the edges. The first sign is typically that her skin is all to soft for an orc her age, and the second is just how calculated her moves are, how the body language is just an act - easily overlooked for just another street raised ork. While her eyes are hard to read, anyone familiar with cyber eyes and able to draw the connection will probably notice that they are just set to appear vacant, and that Nat is more aware than she appears.

    Spoiler: Background
    Show
Nat grew up in the slums with her large extended family. While society would say that she 'took to a life of crime early', the truth is that there were no options. There are however just so much luck an ambitions young ork can have, and eventually she was caught, and sent to jail. Already sharper than most of her kin, she thrived in prison and was soon running her own gang.
After a couple of years, she had a strange visitor. They offered her sentence to be cut, great benefits and a job. It was all to good to be true. Corporate humans did not make such an offers to lowly orcs. She declined, but the very thought of a chance escaping the cycle she was destined too - she would die inside walls like these or in the gutters of the slums she grew up in. So, she called back and accepted. Her records were scrubbed clean the very same day, and a car picked her up.
The jobs were easy, follow a suit or dress - or Johnsson as they were inevitable called to a public location, look menacing as they had a meeting with scruffy individuals and then report what she thought of the group. She did well, so she got promoted. In the way [REDACTED] promotes orks, by having some of the finest medical staff cut into their flesh and replace soft parts with metallic parts. And other things - strange new technology that grew part of her body, something she had never even heard of existed before. Missions got more complicated. Running security was not easy when most of the staff was human and had issues taking orders from someone with a bit of fangs. But like most humans there is a lot of bravado until the threat of violence comes up. Once again, earned a promotion, and more cutting. At several points, she has been unsure who she actually is. So many parts have been replaced, including her very skin to make her 'less disturbing'. Nothing mattered though, in the eyes of all employed, she was just muscle. '63 was hectic, and when '64 crashed, she just walked out.

In the confusion that followed she left. Ever since that date, she has expected [REDACTED] to come knocking, but to the best of her knowledge, they were to busy just holding their ship together.
Staying hidden made her accrue a massive debt, which in the last few years has brought her out of hiding, and doing jobs as a runner, and as if that was not enough, she promised to look after April, the daughter of the old lady that helped hiding Nat. While April is by Ork standards technically an adult, April does not seem to grasp that concept herself. The two share apartment, and are more like siblings.

Nat, or Emily as her SIN states, does not overly stand out among all the orks making a living on being muscle for those with deep pockets. Her SIN gives away very little about her persona, just as if had been a counterfeit. Eats, subscribes to some networks, does some legal work. Steady income, steady expenses. Enjoys clubs and music, and not much to anyone's surprise has a decent insight into street life and gang culture.

Nat is a quite private person and is hard to get close to her about her values. She does care about ork and troll rights, and would stand behind metahuman rights as a whole if push came to shove. If anyone has worked with previously Nat, she is strangely calm, cool and collected, and sees violence and by that extent, herself, as a last resort. That said, she has no hesitation on earning her pay when it comes to that. This goes against the persona she normally projects, which always seems one step away from an altercation.

(If someone wants to tie together characters, I would gladly do so!)

The Explorers Guild is a stream for technomancers who find greater comfort in the settings of various fantasy realms found in many MMORPGs as opposed to the cold steel reality of the sixth world.

Technomamcers of this stream view complex forms as fantasy parallels: Sword, shields, sets of lock picks, etcetera. They view sprites as mercenaries and holy warriors. They work with sprites, as opposed to use them.

MoltenM3rlyn: MoltenM3rlyn is another Technomancer, a fellow member of the Explorer's Guild. He says he lives in Seattle, but of course, Nix has no way to know for sure. What she does know is he helped her tune out most of the background noise of the Resonance constantly bombarding her mind. He helped teach her some basics of living on her own and how to use her talents to make the cash to get by. She is pretty sure that she can call on him for a favor or two. So long as M3rlyn doesn't have to get his physical hands dirty.

Synchro Black: Black is the guy. At least, that's what he always says when you need something. Spending most of his time in one bar or another, the elf does always seem to come through with his claim. So long as you have the cash. Or you'll be earning cash. Or you cut him in on the deal for arranging it.

Valeriya Soloveva: The owner - sort of - of Soloveva Scrappage, a sprawling scrapyard on the outskirts of town that also handles a lot of work for the Vory, serving as a chop shop and clearing house for hot vehicles and drones - or their parts, more often (it's harder to prove that an engine came from a stolen vehicle than a whole car, after all). Jack's worked with her for a long time - in an entirely legitimate role when he was younger, working in the scrapyard and developing his technical and mechanical skills, and later getting more involved in the criminal side of things. Now that's blossomed into freelancing in the shadows, he doesn't work for her anymorer but he still sources most of his drones and van parts from her yard, and when things at home are a little intense he sometimes goes to have a drink with her at the yard.

Ilariy Sorokin: Ilariy is a Vory footsoldier, and the man who is Jack's main go-between between himself and the crime syndicate - this also means he's the main who handles repayments of Jack's debt to the Vory, although they try to keep that separate from other business. Now Jack's gone freelance work, there are times where having a friend in the Vory is useful (although Ilariy is very aware of what his help is worth, and it might be a slight stretch to call them friends).

Probably the most notable thing about him is that he has a family - partner, kids, the works. It's part of why his street name stuck, being of the sort he was given rather than picked, the other part being his tendency towards using airborne drones in his work (mostly surveilance type stuff, although he does have a larger one with a rifle). His getting into the shadowrunning world was a gradual process, going from working in a Vory-aligned legitimate business to working for them directly behind the scenes to putting his skills to more recently trying out putting his skills to more direct use as an independent rigger as his family's needs (and the debt he's gotten into preparing things and dealing with some life emergencies) prove more pressing, driven by the desire to make something better for them (given he's SINless and not particularly well-inclined towards corps).

I'm not 100% no one else is joining, but I have a good party to start with. I have a bust day planned fir tomorrow, so in the time before we start... any requests from my bag of pre-prepared shake-down missions?

1)go to Chicago and come back with a robotic probe that got stuck.

2)do security for a Shadowrun-themed reality TV show

    3)pest extermination

These three jobs or variations on them are always available to runners in the St. Louis area.

Chicago has a full breakdown for 4e in Feral Cities. While far from a nice place to be, it's a far cry from the hell-hole it was in earlier additions.

Making my IC post and thinking some more about my character's life situation (and double-checking the changes I made since copying over from Chummer and finding I lost 6 BP somewhere in transition) has led to some minor adjustments to my sheet (skill additions since I apparently goofed when making post-Chummer adjustments, ended up making him a SINner so less debt, lifestyle change using the advanced rules, inventory tweaks to make those two changes work budget-wise), ss a heads up.

Those changes have also warranted another d6 of starting money: (1d6)[5]

The interbelt for both cities merges from I-55. You could, in principle, just drive. Bribing a guard to let you in to Chicago is easy. Bribing one to let you our is... possible. But the cordon is loose and you asked about getting out of St. Louis, not into the exclusion zone. If you want to avoid the interstate, it will add about two hours to the trip but is possible without any difficulty.

Nothing in particular comes to mind for me - Jack's going to get the stuff from Enkidy (I guess lemme know if there's anything particularly interesting about the parts and such), then do any shopping that Travis hasn't covered (lemme know what you're getting and if you need Jack to cover some of it, Bayushi), and then home.
