    Polina's axe carves chunks from the bulette's hard exterior but Rax's teeth can't find purchase on it. Wuffles drops it to the ground with a bite, and in response - bloodied and cut - the beast dives beneath the ground, kicking up a storm of sand and dirt in the process.

    When Paul retreats, the great land shark attempts to bite him and drag him back, only to be met with a shield of magic and a burst of light that it fails to evade, highlighting it as the target of all your ires.

    Leif and Trellara's ranged assault causes the great beast to round on them, even as arrow and flame cut wounds in its armour, it leaps into the sky, heedless of the danger, and falls down upon the trio (with Calcifer). Trellara and Calcifer slip away, though the damage is still done, and Trellara falls unconscious from the impact, and Leif finds herself beneath the beast's hefty form.

    I rolled the advantage from Faerie Fire, didn't change the events though.
    Trellara hits with her bow (barely).
    Leif hits with Produce Flame. B2 is bloodied.
    Calcifer misses.

    B2 Deadly Leaps (DC16 Str/Dex) onto Trellara, Calcifer, and Leif.

    Trellara (13+3=16, Pass) and Calcifer (20+mods=Pass) make their saves, getting knocked aside and take 6 slashing and 8 bludgeoning. This damage knocks Trellara to 0 due to the bite from earlier (38 total HP, -27 from bite, -14 from Deadly Leap).

    Leif fails their save (7+Mods), so she takes 12 slashing and 17 bludgeoning (29 total). She is also knocked prone underneath B2.

    With the removal of B1 from the battlefield, the entire party is up, though not quite so low that he's definitely not going to get another turn out, just possibly not going to get one.

    Polina and Rax run over to try to help Leif. Polina puts on a burst of speed and seems to be almost dragged along by her axe in its eagerness to smite the bulette. Rax can't quite make it into melee with the creature but bounds along beside as usual, ducking and weaving.

    As you converge on the remaining bulette it strikes back against you. Paul's flames lick at its edges, lightning goes evaded, and slashes rebound off its steely hide, yet its own bite against Leif's prone form grabs only dirt instead of flesh. Surrounded and little hope of escape, it falls quickly before your combined onslaught. The burrowed monster does not return, and you're granted a reprieve in which to rest and recover.

    It was on 11hp at the end of its turn, and flubbed its sole attack roll, with advantage, so I'll call it there after all!
    Battle concluded. With one dead and one retreated, this was a Hard encounter, worthy of 12 experience points.

    Paul crushes some herbs and grit into his water container and takes a swig. The alchemical concoction helps his body heal (Cure Wounds (1d8+4)[12]).

    "That was sudden. Is everyone okay?" He assumes Leif and Trellara will probably take care of the major healing.

    Once you've patched up and are back on the move, you're back into the thick of things, cutting through briars and thick seemingly dead yet no less obstructive vines. When you climb another small hill to maintain your bearings, you're closer...but not close enough, not yet. You're forced to camp out in the dry heat, huddling against whatever terrain you can find for cover against the creatures roaming about. Thankfully, whether accident or otherwise, they leave you alone.

    Day 22, Mid-Afternoon

    All too suddenly in your never ending slog through pricking thorns and barbed plants you reach the end of it all, a massive expanse of utterly barren wasteland, flat sand on the ground and death in the air, reaching for miles ahead of you. Rising from a low mesa in the centre of this wide expanse of no cover is an intimidating sight: the massive stone lion, crouching as if ready to pounce upon a nearby hill. The cyclopena monolith is composed of a dull tawny stone. It looks to be about two hundred and forty feet in length, and the top of its maned head rises over eighty feet from the ground. There seems to be some sort of hollow between the lion's front paws,in the area bordered by its chest. Likewise, hints of a dark cave are apparent in its gaping maw.

    You opt to stash the phylactery in a shallow dug hole, lacking any other suggested alternatives, and proceed overground towards the lion. It is a long, long hour's journey over entirely open ground in which anyone and everyone looking would be able to spot you. The reverse is just as true though, and perhaps that lack of cover helps to explain why no one leaps out at you.

    Flanked by massive stone paws to the north and south, you approach the hollow beneath the beast's maw. A worn stone path leads up between the great paws to a low stone ramp, climbing into the archway set into the lion's chest. Two basalt statues of skeletal lions stand facing each other on either side of that arch, as if passing judgment upon those who travel between them.

    Beyond the opening is a large chamber of rough hewn walls and a domed ceiling rising fifteen feet overhead. To the north is heaped a large mound of crushed nettles and briars, arranged in what might be a nest, while to the south lies a massive mound of bones. The entire area smells strangley musty and acrid.

    Polina advises the others. "This nest is big. I'm not liking the looks of it." She glances over at Rax, as if measuring-up her person-sized blue dragon companion versus whatever must live in the nest. Rax's jaw crackles with electricity. "Yeah, Rax, I recognize that smell, too."

    Polina scans the skies and adds, "We might be safer inside than anywhere else, ironically. Does anybody have a way to alert us if somebody comes in after us? I have some traps but nothing that'd slow down... THAT," she says, gesturing towards the nest.

    You spend a bit of time jury-rigging a rudimentary trap - something that is unlikely to kill a beast large enough for the nest, but at least perhaps injure it, or distract if for a moment and let you catch it unawares, and then set about looking for a way inside. Daylight is burning, after all.

    Climbing to the maw above would prove difficult were you not in possession of two intelligent flying beasts that could carry a rope up, and serve as anchors while the more gravity-bound of you are forced to climb hand over hand, struggling up the ropes. There is little danger of falling, but the less athletic find themselves sweating even moreso than usual by the time you reach the shaded dark of the lion's mouth. Fifty feet of rope climbing is more than most of you are used to.

    Within, you find a large balcony built into the beast's lower jaw. Large stone teeth, each three to five feet high, ring the balcony's edge, while the upper jaw arches ominously above. The roof of its mouth is fifteen feet overhead. At the back of the mouth, where the throat would lead, is a pair of massive stone doors leading inside. Beyond the doors, you hear the shuffling of feet, and though you cannot discern how many there are inside, the way they are moving and the fact that you can hear them suggests that they could hear you.

    With a quiet breath Polina incants a spell and thrusts open the stone doors, revealing a chamber empty of furnishings, but no less remarkable for it. An arched ceiling supported by stone ribs runs up the walls, each rib bearing carvings of thorny plants and twisted branches. Between each rib, the stone walls are carved with the images of lions pouncing on and mauling human victims. A pair of equally large stone doors stand opposite you.

    More pressingly however, are the three shirtless, grey-skinned hobgoblins, rippling with toned musculature. They break forward immediately, careful battle formation adhered to exactly, fists cloaked in crackling lightning. One thrusts at Polina, but the goliath manages to deflect the blows. Rax is not so agile, taking a stunning blow that holds him in place for a follow up, while the third slips around the side, speeding past the party into the 'backline' to target Ayalla, only to find the air genasi just as agile as her much heavier counterpart.

    The monks were faster off the gate with initiative this time around. One attacks Polina twice - misses both. Patient Defence means attacks against it have disadvantage.
    One attacks Rax, hits once for 7 lightning. Rax fails its save vs. Stunning Strike (DC12), so the second attack also hits for 8 lightning.
    The third slips past (Step of the Wind - no OA) to attack Ayalla, and misses both strikes.

    Polina is surprised at the speed of the monks - she thought opening the door magically might catch them off-guard. She quickly realizes Rax isn't going to be hurt by a little electricity, though, not in his current form anyhow. But she focuses on attacking the one just in front of Rax since the one who attacked her seems... dodgy. She stumbles slightly on the back-swing but holds her ground.

    The party layers strikes in against the nearest hobgoblin. Though one of Leif's rays is knocked aside by the charged fist, and two more are dodged, one of them hits, followed swiftly by Wuffles' bite at the ankle, Paul's dual-blasts, and one of Trellara's arrows. What was in the first moment a healthy and hearty martial artist is now bruised, bloodied, and weary. It doesn't stop him from trying to hit Ayalla, but the genasi evades yet again. The other two split their attention, moving around Rax and Polina, and focusing instead on Paul and Leif. Taken from the side, Paul suffers a critically charged strike, as well as its follow up. Only one hits Leif from her opponent, and though she feels a discharge of energy through her gut, the stunning effect proves ineffective against the druid.

    Wuffles hits, but target stays standing. This means unfortunately that Ayalla misses with SG on a nat 1.
    Leif's first ray gets Deflected, dealing zero damage. Two miss, the other one hits.
    Trellara shoots an arrow at the closest hob, hitting narrowly for minimum damage (4)
    Paul knocks the target back and then follows up with a firebolt.
    One of Polina's attacks hit.

    The top hob moves away, skirting around the side. This provokes an OA if Polina wants to take it (AC17). They hit Leif for 7 lightning, but she resists the stun attempt.
    The other one scoots south of Rax and attacks Paul. It crits once for 16 lightning, and then narrowly hits a second time for 8. Its stun is still on a recharge, so it Patient Defences instead.
    The one on the right attacks Ayalla again, missing with both attacks once more, and Patient Defences in turn.

    So bottom left and far right are Dodging this round. Top middle is not.
    Far right is also on single digit HP. Top middle is undamaged. Bottom left took one hit from Polina.

    The dodging hobgoblins prove well trained and capable, as they're able to slip around Paul's spells, Wuffles bite, and Trellara's arrows with ease. The one who had focused on offense is less lucky though, receiving a tearing scrape from Leif and a brutal strike across the back from Polina that leaves him weak enough for Ayalla's spiritual protectors to cut a pair down before they can attack again. One remains, but they are undeterred, eager and willing to fight to the death, they unleash a flurry of electrified fists against Paul. He resists the attempt to stun him, but that doesn't stop the shocks from...well, shocking.

    SG's damage occurs at the start of the monk's turn, not Ayalla's. Wuffles misses, since their advantage is negated by dodge.
    Leif hits (barely - 17 AC) with Thorn Whip
    Trellara misses her bowshot.
    Paul's thunderwave is saved against, and their cannon misses likewise due to dodge.
    Polina misses once and crits for 34 total. Rax follows up and hits as well, dropping the monk to single digits.
    Spirit Guardians goes off, its damage enough even with saves to kill the top and right monk, leaving just bottom-left.

    He attacks twice, hitting Paul once (19+5=24) for 5 lightning (Stun: resisted), and then flurry of blows, hitting once more (18+5=23), for 9 lightning.

    Party's up. Monk might get another turn of attacks, since he's barely bloodied, though it's not looking likely for him.
