Polina stoically knows it's her job to keep the dragon busy while the others tend to the damages. She ducks in the door, Marks the dragon with a quick wave, and then brings her axe up and then down again in a one-two swing. Rax follows, staying adjacent and dodgy.

Spoiler: OOC - Attacks as usual

And her second attack: (1d20+7)[14] for (1d8+4)[11] and (1d6)[3] slashing. She'll stay central to the doorway to body-block anybody from slipping back through towards the others.

When Polina steps into the room, to her left she spots a hobgoblin spellcaster, wearing hastily donned studded leather armour that seems to have only barely been buckled in time. They bark out a spell, and though there's a hint of jovialness in its wake, its magic proves utterly insufficient to affect the goliath. Cursing in goblinoid, the spellcaster darts around a corner, back out of sight and out of danger.

The dragon proves little more effective, as its claws and teeth strike only empty air and thick armour. It finds Polina a far more difficult target to snack upon than it did Trellara.

Polina hits with one axe hit, misses with the other.

The Spellcaster ('K') casts Tasha's Hideous Laughter on Polina, who rolls a nat 20 on the wis save, and easily beats the DC.

The dragon then rolls 3, 1, and 10 on it's triple attack rolls, which with a +7 means a triple miss.

The enigmatic 'S' remains unseen and unknown.

With the Ettin slain, the entire party is up. Bear initiative in mind for positioning purposes.

Polina groans at the hobgoblin's poor attempt at a joke, and replies in Goblinoid, "That was shameful! You're right to go hide!"

She's a little busy with the dragon, of course, but she and Rax sense that the dragon flailing about means an opportunity for them, and they strike out in full force. Rax moves up and attacks, his little blue wyrmling dragon form dwarfed by the much larger one.

Polina takes advantage of her Hunter's Mark and Ayalla's Stardust on the dragon, slashing out at the illuminated foe. Her axe alternates strikes while her shield keeps cover for Calcifer and Rax on either side.

When the dragon pukes acid at the group, Leif is barely able to react in time and summons a protective barrier to mitigate most of the damage. Still, what got through the barrier still hurt like hell.

"Go help Polina and Rax out," Leif says to Calcifer, as she cleans off some of the acid, "I'll be right behind you."

Calcifer then moves next to Polina and he is clearly not amused at the dragon's antics. A little hand extends from the blob of fire and little fingers extend from the hand, which then click together. Immediately a massive ball of flame erupts from the dragon's right side.

The dragon proves an agile foe, even with Ayalla's stardust swirling around its vision. Paul's bursts of light and flame, and Calcifer-Leif's fireball are slipped through as if it always knew it was coming. It doesn't prove quite as able against Polina's thick-slicing axe, nor a lucky arrow from Trellara, both of which deal critical blows against the black-scaled beast. It howls in anger, maw gnashing, when the hobgoblin - looking slightly singed - reappears from around its corner and barks a quick spell. Paul's joints slow for just a moment before releasing back, but Polina locks up, utterly paralyzed by the magic.

The dragon's bite snaps down on her shoulder, though its claws skitter against locked-armour, kept from landing by the light in its eyes.

As if this weren't bad enough, the door to your right opens, revealing a cruel-looking goblin, wielding a bow that looks just as cruel, accompanied by a hunting hawk. They launch themselves into battle their arrow finding nothing, but the hawk's talons add to the hurt caused by the dragon, and the paralyzed Polina drops like a slab of metal to the ground, still unable to move even unconscious. With one of your party downed once more, the dragon retreats back into darkness, hiding away to let the goblins take its place.

Ayalla hits the dragon with Stardust.
Unfortunately the dragon has a semi-okay Dex save, and saves against both of Paul's artifices.
Trellara pulls out a surprising shot and crits the dragon...for 14. She's trying.
Leif's fireball hits dragon and hobgoblin; but both make their dex save, knocking the 34 down to 17 each.
Polina hits once and crits once. Rax misses. The damage is enough to severely bloody the dragon.

On its turn, the hobgoblin spellcaster reveals himself again, a little more on-fire for ware, and upcasts a Hold Person on Polina and Paul. Paul saves (barely, ended up with a 14 vs. DC14). Polina does not, and is Paralyzed.

S finally makes their appearance, and likewise targets Polina alongside their pet hawk. The goblin ranger misses despite advantage (double 5's), but the bird hits, paralyze turning it into a crit for 24 damage.

The dragon attacks Polina, disadvantage negated by advantage, but still only hits once with its bite, critting due to paralyze for 32 piercing and 12 acid.
Assuming Polina's health total was accurate, this drops her to 0 and making death saves, albeit at the very end of the party set.

The dragon then retreats back into the darkness, since it's severely injured.

As a reminder, even if healed, she'll still be Paralyzed from Hold Person (DC14 Wis save to end early). Trellara is also more than happy to donate a heal spell with her turn if needed/desired.

    Party's up.

Ayalla and Trellara get Polina back up onto her feet between the two of them, while Paul and Leif's combined fire puts a swift end to the hunting hawk's life. When Rax heads south to strike the hobgoblin spellcaster, it retaliates with a screaming wave of Fear that snatches at the hearts of Rax and Leif, urging them to flee as far and fast as they can. The goblin's potshot at Polina gets deflected, cut out of midair, and it takes the opportunity to hide itself away in the dragon's Darkness.

Paul's swift fire manages to put out the Fear before it can properly take hold of Rax and Leif, saving them from an awkward getaway. The barely-conscious hobgoblin retaliates with a mind-twisting spell once more, but the lance of mental pain on Paul is diminished by his own will.

Ayalla and Trellara both attempt their own assaults, but find their enemies slightly too dextrous or sturdy this go around. Likewise Leif and Polina's strikes against the dragon find no purchase, and it's only Calcifer's fireblast scorches a patch of its recently-healed scales, bringing it back low once more. From the darkness, the goblin leaps out, loosing an arrow at the unsuspecting Leif which lodges in her shoulder, only to be followed up by a blast of searing acid that washes over Polina and Leif.

The caster casts Dissonant Whispers on Paul, but he makes his wis save, so he only takes 7 psychic damage.
The goblin archer leaves the darkness and shoots Leif, hitting for 11 piercing. He attempts to Hide again but rolls poorly, and his location is clear.
The dragon's breath recharges, and it blasts Polina (successful save, 18 acid) and Leif (failed save, (36 damage).

Unless you spend some defensive features/abilities with reactions, I think that drops Polina and Leif both. Might drop Leif even with them after she got shot.

    Health update:
Hobgoblin caster is extremely near death. It's likely one hit will end it.
Dragon is bloodied and quite injured, but not quite on death's door.
The goblin archer has been damaged but not much.

    Party's up.

Polina is not quite close enough to use her shield to block for Leif, but she successfully hides behind it herself, the shield's magical enhancement keeping it from instantly dissolving in the stream of acid.

Rax's eyes glint in the light of the fire from Paul, pleased to see the hobgoblin go down who'd tripped up his master. Rax runs to aid Polina versus the much larger dragon again.

Polina, for her part, shakes off the last of the acid from her still-dripping shield, and brings her axe up again. She knows it must be just a matter of time before the dragon is felled. If the goblin were closer she'd love to be taking them both on, but he is just out of reach for the moment and the dragon is her priority.

Polina takes just a second to spare a glance back to make sure Leif is back in the fight but she smiles when she sees confirmation of the flames hitting the dragon once more.

The battle swiftly swings back into your favour. Though the hobgoblin shrugs off the sacred flame, it doesn't do so for non-sacred flames, and finally falls to Paul's fire. Trellara dashes in to follow behind him, swiftly resuscitating Leif with a quickly incanted spell. Together, the pair of fire flingers end the black dragon's life with a pained roar and a thunderous slump, leaving only the goblin remaining. Rax and Polina leap up onto the bead of force to get close to the revealed ranger, slashing and biting and bloody him. He retaliates with a swing of his scimitar which strikes only shield, and then darts away onto the upper level before anyone can hit him in the back.

Confident that the others will handle the remaining goblin (and that he has no non-lethal spells), Paul moves to examine the dragon's corpse, and the area where it was perhaps drinking potions.

Polina turns to follow the goblin and on seeing Calcifer, asks, "Can you get us up there quicker?"

The goblin twists away from Polina's shove, and though her axe bites into his shoulder it doesn't fall, instead darting away, leaping from the building into the cold dark water below. You hear its sloshing grow distant, and then silent, unable to find its silhouette among the looming bones of the sunken civilisation.

With the danger passed, you have a moment to breathe to yourself. Trellara hurries past you back up to the upper level, and lets out a deep sigh. "Our boat's gone." The fires set during the fights with the ogre spread, uncontested, and spread to your boat, leaving you without transportation. You may be walking back to the Tiri Kitor enclave, unless you can source an alternative.

But that comes later - first is recuperation, and then reclamation of whatever the dragon and goblins kept secret here.

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show

Polina's shove fails, so the goblin remains standing. She hits with her attack, but misses on the OA she gets when it darts away, Dashing down the building side and out of sight.

The goblin's got 40ft move speed due to Longstrider, so realistically it's outrunning you, in the dead of night, when you don't know what else is coming. I'm gonna call combat concluded there.

To no one's great surprise, this was another Deadly encounter for 15xp.

Decide if you're going to expend any additional resources (slots, potions, etc.) on healing and then I'll do an update on what you found and what comes next.

Polina takes a look around, unsure what to do about the lack of boat.

She marvels at the dragon, joking to Rax, "Someday you'll be even bigger than that, eh?"

She gives the ettin's battleaxe an experimental lift, comparing it to her current one. "Hmm."

Lastly, she will wander over to the side-rooms and poke around for anything written in goblin or draconic. She's not the smartest in the group but she at least has some familiarity with these kind of foes.
