[Amnestic]

Though the hellish beast leaps aside from Paul's acid, it lines itself right up with a devastating cannon blast that sends it reeling. Blinking through blood, it rushes forward, directly into Ayalla's readied spell. Holy fire engulfs the hellish fire, and the dog falls to its wounds.

The hobgoblins begin to reach your side of the bridge, flinging arrows and javelins at Bernie, but the dodging warrior evades them, deflecting those that come too close. With a surging beat of its wings, the dragon soars up from beyond the cliff's edge, only to be immediately ensnared by Leif's magic spell. The pull of the earth is too great, and it is immediately pulled back below the cliff, roaring with anger as it finds its wings useless.

Jorr, seeing an opportunity, moves in closer and from behind a tree looses a heavy crossbow bolt at the weakest looking hobgoblin beside their leader. The sharp projectile lodges itself in the soldier's throat, killing him in a particularly unpleasant manner.

Paul misses with acid splash, crits with cannon, lowering the Hellhound to very lower health.
The regulars take potshots at Bernie and Paul, both miss.

The Hellhound moves forward to use its fire breath; Ayalla's readied Sacred Flame triggers and kills it, preventing any damage.
The Sergent moves in and throws two javelins at Bernie; both miss.
The dragon flies above the lip of the cliff to attack...and fails its save vs. Readied Eartbind (5 vs. DC16). It drops back down out of sight, and begins to slowly descend towards the ravine floor.

Jorr snipes the nearest Regular, killing it.

"I can't believe that actually worked!" Leif laughs as the dragon descends out of view, "But I'm going to need some cover!"

Leif then moves north, stopping briefly to whip the hellhound near Bernie with thorns, then moving onward to use the tower for cover so she can maintain the spell safely. She then summons Calcifer. "Fancy picking some of these guys off, little guy?"

Calcifer then heads off and attacks the hobgoblin with a glob of fire.

Bernie, Leif, and Ayalla concentrate their attacks towards the leading hobgoblin sergeant, to mixed results. Leif's spells and Calcifer's firebolt both strike wide against him, but Bernie manages to catch him with one of his icy blade strikes, and the crossbow bolt from Ayalla strikes it in the shoulder. Bernie moving in finally gives the archer on the northeast tower a chance to strike, as it looses both its readied arrow and knocks a second one. Bernie deflects the first, but the second stabs into his upper thigh through his armour. The remaining two veterans continue to dash towards the battlefield, swords in hand, but they can't get close enough to actually engage.

Circling around the edge of the tower, Paul uses the remaining cloak of darkness to launch two shots at the far tower, skewering the hobgoblin with magic before it can effect an evasion.

The remaining regular rushes forward, almost fully crossing the bridge, though still not able to bring his sword to bear, while the sergeant hacks away at the fighter with his greatsword. Bernie evades one strike, but takes the other one hard. Jorr takes the opportunity to take a potshot at the sergeant, but he's not able to properly find an angle, and the bolt soars away into darkness.

Though you can't see it, you hear a draconic roar from the seat of the ravine, and the churning of claw on rock as it begins its climb back up towards you.

Unseen advantage saves Paul's rolls, killing the hobgoblin regular on the tower.

The sergeant attacks Bernie twice, hitting once for 10 (and I may have just remembered his HAM), 27/54 remaining.
The dragon reaches the bottom of the cliff, and begins climbing back up the side, dashing to do so so, but no climb speed means it's still slow going.

"You go help the others, I'll deal with our scaly friend," Leif nods to Calcifer. Calcifer then moves up beside Bernie and teleports him, and any other nearby allies, a little south to give them some breathing room. Leif then climbs the watchtower to get a better look at the dragon, if she can.

Calcifer moves within 5ft of Bernie and Waffles (the square directly to the right of Bernie should do), then uses Fiery Teleportation to move all three of them 15ft directly south. Any enemies within 5ft of where Calcifer teleports from take (1d6+3)[9] fire damage if they fail the DC 16 dexterity saving throw.

Meanwhile Leif starts climbing the stairs to the north of her.

Wuffles and Bernie team up to strike at the hobgoblin, with the spirit wolf first bringing him low, and then Bernie stabbing at the downed enemy. Even injured and downed, the soldier manages to evade the first blow, though the second strikes true. When Calcifer's flame washes over it, it lets out one final yell of pain before falling still. Ayalla strides forward, blasting sacred flame on one of the approaching armourless hobgoblins, but they're undeterred, rushing in to avenge their fallen comrades. An arrow shot flies forward, distracting Bernie (though it misses) enough for the charging hobgoblin to slashing forward, taking a chunk of his armour away.

Paul moves towards the edge of the canyon, although the half-orc is sure to stop a few feet from the edge. He aims his wand at the torchlit figure of the hobgoblin atop the tower across the gorge, and launches a jet of flame and a purple bolt at it. Glancing into the canyon, he looks for the dragon. Whether he sees it or not, he moves back south to help his companions near the end of the bridge if the hobgoblin falls.

Another dual blast of Paul's soars across the bridge, crossing in the dark of night, both striking the hobgoblin and thrusting him back. He remains standing, though clearly bloodied by searing wounds. The remaining hobgoblin regular continues to move forwards, focusing on evasion, while the dragon keeps climbing the gorge wall, though it remains below the 'lip'.

Jorr takes another shot at the closest hobgoblin, this one finds its target against the unarmoured enemy, piercing through its shoulder.

Leif runs to the edge of the watchtower and looks down into the gorge, scanning for the dragon. Once she sees it, she lifts her arms into the air and waves them from side to side as if beginning a strange ritualistic dance. "I'm sorry mister dragon, but your services will no longer be required." Then a massive torrent of water appears in the air above the dragon and crashes down upon it.

Meanwhile, Calcifer teleports himself and any allies he can further back.

Leif casts Tidal Wave, centred on the dragon. Each creature in that area must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes (4d8)[17] bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and isn’t knocked prone.

Calcifer moves into a position where he can teleport and hit multiple enemies, if possible, then uses Fiery Teleportation to deal (1d6+3)[5] fire damage to them and teleports himself and any allies within 5ft of him 15ft south.

[Amnestic]

Wuffles latches onto the unarmoured leg and tears at it, locking it in place for Bernie to deliver two quick strikes that pierce through its chest, sending blood spattering everywhere. The fighter falls, dead. Flames burn away at the other veteran in the melee as calcifer teleports away with Bernie and Wuffles in tow, leaving the veteran unmarked. Though Ayalla follows up with her own flames, the veteran pushes on through the pain, swinging his blade at the spirit caster, though she dodges away from it.

From atop the tower, Leif calls down a wave of tidal water upon the dragon, but the mighty beast holds fast to the side of the cliff, twisting its wings to shield itself against the tumultuous force. The remaining veteran takes a potshot at her with his bow, though the long distance over a windy ravine makes it go wide. He disappears down the tower out of sight.

Circling around at speed, Paul's dual shots finish off the unarmoured hobgoblins, firing at both to deal simultaneous death. Despite being sodden by the wave, the dragon continues its ascent, climbing back up over the lip it had originally been crossing before becoming earthbound. Unable to reach any enemies though, it opts to play defensively. Despite its hesitance, Jorr still manages to plant a crossbow bolt into its scales.

Bernie moves forward, clutching his blade and watching it warily, but the great beast is too far for him to engage it in melee.

Shrouded in darkness, the fire bolts from Leif spread wide, impacting the ground past the dragon but not landing on their target. It does serve to give Calcifer a guiding light though, while Ayalla readies her shot. Bernie and Wuffles aren't able to reach the creature, so they merely get closer to the edge.

Paul's midair burst of light is again dispelled by the creature's wings, buffeting the light away before any can lay claim to its scales. The cannon forces it towards the ground just a little faster, but when it hits the ravine floor once more it doesn't try to climb once more. Instead it turns, and though you can't clearly see it, its silhouette appears to be retreating away from the bridge as fast as its legs can carry it.

It dodges the Faerie Fire again - even without the Dodge to give it advantage on the save, it's rocking a +7 to dex saves.
The cannon hits though, for 2.

The dragon reaches the ground and Dashes away.

Combat is now ended unless the party wants to try to pursue, but it's night, and your options for hitting it are limited in the next 5 rounds before Earthbind expires and its flight speed+dash will take it away from anything you can do, especially for Leif+Ayalla who are at the top of the tower. Paul can keep pace by Dashing along the cliff edge, but every cannon shot is going to be at disadvantage due to darkness.

Ayalla watches the dragon retreat with crossbow ready until it is out of sight.

Whether or not it's because of the warning (and it doesn't seem likely, knowing what you do of dragons), the beast does not return. When Earthbind elapses, there is no triumphant return of beating wings. Peering through the darkness you see flickering shadows and...not much else. Minutes tick by, and you're left with just the wind rushing through the canyon.

As you gather back together and begin inspecting the bridge - absent the threat of hobgoblins - you note that a crack at the base of one of the southern towers which, if widened by force may be enough to collapse it.

15 experience for the Deadly encounter this was. Would've been deadlier on your health pools had the dragon not been indisposed!

The hob Veteran had a potion of healing on him, but otherwise those you've killed had nothing of note. If you're investigating north instead of just destroying the bridge let me know.

And if you are destroying the bridge, say how. Slashing weapons probably not the most efficient option :P
