Day Four
The empty halls, so different to how they were when she first arrived, left a shiver down the Innocent's spine. Hunching in on herself, she watched the meandering of the dwindling remnants, the figures as they all came before her. She was chosen. And now that she had spoken, and been attacked, they all trusted her word. They all waited for her mercy. Or her vindication.
The man who stood out front of the remaining councilors, having been singled out by her already. There was no defence anymore. There was no argument. The Jovial man had been their chef, an easy smile still on his face even while others looked away, others accepted his position standing on this spot of judgement.
"I do not blame you all." The words were calm, the smile still on his face as the Innocent affirmed she would not be swayed by whatever he said. The man sighed, hands resting in a casual position next to his side. "After all, I did betray you all first."
There was regret in his words. Not sadness, but regret. For what exactly it was unsure, but the man looked up at the Innocent, maintaining his easy smile even as the others stepped around to to administer justice to him. "But I have done my duty. Your justice now is a reflection of Rieth's wrath, instead of Erian's mercy. You may cleanse your midst, but you have lost your way."
He said no more as he was ripped to pieces, even his words not affecting the furor of the remnants. In their hearts they blamed him for all the unjust deaths they had visited upon those around them. All those who had been killed by paranoia, it was the guilty's fault!
The Innocent had no such justifications. Instead she stared at the ripped body in relief...
And in sadness.
He had not had the Blade of Light.

Re: Mutants WW II: Songs of the Fallen
It was a good game, but it is inevitable now given what happened the last night. There are only 2 possibilities depending on how an edge case is decided. Wolves played well and them not being in contact probably worked in their favor.

Re: Mutants WW II: Songs of the Fallen
Night Four
Above the now silent halls of the Tower, the cold bastions of ages past watched. Each a representation of the hopes of the city that had been lost to history. The Innocent watched them carefully, trying to take in each detail. The night was too quiet, each breath almost restrained as if afraid of breaking the sound.
She hadn't seen him since he had come to protect her, once again off on his own thing, doing his own thing. Even somehow with few people remaining he managed to stay hidden. That was one of his gifts, she supposed. Her meandering thoughts stumbled over questions still hidden in her mind, but the Innocent reached the great halls as the first flicker of dawn crept over the horizon. The hall stained purple with the creep of the light, and she breathed out.
She didn't let the tension go until everyone gathered once more, no death in the night. He was right, it would be over soon.

Re: Mutants WW II: Songs of the Fallen
strange? I expected that the demon's kill would be stolen again, and having learned from the previous night would use purity's kill on me and demon's kill on the demon. I wasn't sure how the demon's kill power would work against the demon. But it also makes sense that they can't target the same person 2 nights in a row, so now we are here. I'm still surprised they didn't kill me with the purity's blade and that the Demon didn't kill flat_footed. Alright I guess it'll end today.
Flat_footed must be the last of the pure.

Re: Mutants WW II: Songs of the Fallen
Ok, finally got some time together. Cazero, even if not a "wolf", is our last threat to town. If Wolf!flat exists, the game would have ended when Snow was killed. 2 wolves, 1 Town and 1 Neutral would have ended it.
Between my new job and the vote for Xumtill, I kind of bypassed Cazero's claim that his power was forcibly used, and aimed at Rogue against his will. I think what may have actually happened is he tried to kill Rogue and was unable to. Worried about being tracked by me, he made up something to explain it. Since Rogue didn't die, all my tracking would have shown is the target, not the power. It's a moot point, since the plan was for me to target Rogue anyways. The result for that was "You get nothing".
Rogue, I don't suppose you received any input from that night? The hidden mechanic of the Demon Kill not working against you made me question what other hidden details Blade created. My best guess is something about the demon Kill exactly targeting the holder of the Pure kill changed something, since Xumtill didn't have it when we lynched him.
I'm guessing last man standing is that condition. You could only achieve this going into today convincing Rogue to vote me out, and then using the wolf kill on Rogue at night. If you killed me last night, Rogue gets to choose the tie and end the game. If you killed Rogue last night, it's a 50/50 without a chosen and however Blade decides to handle that mechanic.

Re: Mutants WW II: Songs of the Fallen
The demon cannot harm me. I was told that from the very beginning, and I imagine Cazero would have known that and not wasted the night kill. Also your tracking is off. I did target Snow that night, so that shows me you are a liar anyways. I think the reason Wolf didn't win is because exactly the scenario that is playing it out. It wasn't a guarantee win for wolves since town (me) still had a chance with my protector (who happens to be neutral) still alive.

Day is being finished, stand by for final narration

Day Five
"And that is your judgement?" The councillor, one of the few left in these chambers, spoke in surly tones. None reproached him, not even the figure set upon the Chosen's Chair. She looked down upon him with sorrow, knowing that even correct she was put into a situation she did not like. The act of calling for accusations was harrowing even now, especially as the remaining suspicions boiled to people they had trusted for generations.
Like the older councillor on the stand now. Once a man who had organised the events and the distributions of water to the people, now on trial for having chosen to serve Rieth. The other councillors averted their gaze. They had no more heart for the killing, not after seeing how few of them remained. The man, seeing the lack of response, hung his head. He offered no further rebuttal, instead hanging his head.
The Innocent strode down from the chair, prepared to execute her sentence with her own hands. An admirable action.
If foolish.
The old man waited until she was closer, until she was in reach, before he pulled the holy Blade of Light from his heart, manifesting it mere moments away from impaling her. If she was to take him down, he would bring her with him to Rieth! No one in the hall acted fast enough to stop him, none expected the sudden upheaval of process.
But as the blade of light approached the Chosen elected by the people, a green light spread forth from her body, blocking the blade. The Innocent's eyes were no longer her own, instead they glowed with an emerald green light, and the smile she wore was sad as she held the blade gently in her hands.
"No more do you kill in my sister's name." The voice was soft, gentle, but even as she spoke her hands flexed.
And the Blade of Light. The Holy artefact of Rieth, shattered. The man fell to his knees. The Chosen, possessed by Erian, looked on him from above, then sighed.
Then gasped.
Blood trickled from the corners of her mouth for a moment before a green outline was forcefully ripped from around her, and a translucent figure was pulled above the Innocent's now fallen form.
"Got you." The chill covered the room, and the translucent figure of Erian fought for a brief moment as the smoke rushed in to cover the form. The ripping sound was otherworldly, weirdly resonant in a way that didn't make full sense to the listeners, but moments later as the smoke boiled down to the figure of the Demon, there was no sign of Erian's outline anymore.
Reaching down to grab the broken Blade of Light, there was a sneer on the face of the creature as it ground the remnants of the blade between its fingers. Around them all, the tower shuddered suddenly, all of the statues of the Holy Purifier shattering one by one. As the Councillors glanced around in shock and began to flee for their lives, the Demon instead kneeled down to the last remaining killer who lay shocked on the ground at the events that had just preceded this moment.
"Don't worry, I have not forgotten your slight." The words were almost reassuring, soothing, as the clawed smokey hand reached down to grab the chin of the older councillor. Disarmed and shocked at what he'd seen, he barely reacted as the Demon leaned down close. There was a consideration before he reached further down to grip the councillor's throat.
"I thought I had made it obvious..." The fingers suddenly dug in harshly, blood seeping from where the claws at the ends of its fingers pierced skin. "Don't. Touch. Her."
*Crack*
Whatever response the old man had it was lost after his body fell limp as his neck lolled to the side at an unnatural angle. The figure stood up, almost carelessly throwing the recently killed figure to the side before turning back to the curled up figure on the floor. There was almost a sigh, and the clawed fingers reached down to wipe the blood off from around her mouth. "You stood too close, I am sorry. If you must play your role more, I need to save you again. So troublesome."
Despite the reluctance in its voice, the creature cleared her and picked the limp body up, looking around at the shaking foundations of Erian's tower before vanishing once more into the smoke surrounding it. The Innocent's figure was gone as well.
The Pure had been slain to a man.
Rieth's last will had been broken.
But so too had Erian's promise.
Further away, overlooking a city that had been ravaged by paranoia for long enough to show, the Demon considered the people. How would they live now in this world without the ability to look to the twin goddesses for guidance? It was almost curious to find out.
Spoiler: Phase ResultsFlat_footed had his neck snapped by the Demon. He was The Rattled Breath - (Wolf Power Stealer)

Re: Mutants WW II: Songs of the Fallen
Thanks for the game everybody, and consolations to our poor woofs!
I'm actually really happy with how the game went bc I feel this way we got the most satisfying narration, with early despair for town, the Chosen/Innocent being the same person and alive at the end with the Demon78% of DM's started their first campaign in a tavern. If you're one of the 22% that didn't, copy and paste this into your signature.

Re: Mutants WW II: Songs of the Fallen
As usual, it was fun watching. I was rather tempted to volunteer when blade asked for potential replacements, but since I was both out of town and still pretty busy with work I decided not to, which was probably the correct (if boring) choice.

Re: Mutants WW II: Songs of the Fallen
Yup. Narratively speaking this was a good way for things to play out.
But also, yeah, especially after reading flat's chat I do feel genuinely bad for wolves with how well they all played (yes, including you, Illven!) and how ridiculously close they came to converting that into victory.
And new rule: I'm not allowed to be mad at myself for being spectacularly wrong until I've seen the flips that prove I was in fact spectacularly wrong. Though I also shouldn't let that stop me reevaluating if evidence contradicts my existing opinions.I'm writing stuff, come and read it!

Re: Mutants WW II: Songs of the Fallen
If you had outed Flat too soon (also, how?), I would have grabbed the opportunity to bus him ruthlessly and we'd have won, as well (since I had intended to block you and kill Rogue). It really was a situation where so many small changes along the way would have resulted in a wolf win, it's actually quite funny.
