Random NPC Thread.
At some point in their campaign, most DMs are shown a situation where they think ''I wish a had an NPC for this situation! All statted out and with a backstory and (most importantly) a name!''. For me...it's the name more than anything else, but I thought: why not have a random NPC thread? I thought I'd start off with a lynguist, speaker of many languages.
Cyya, Grey Elf Bard 1 (Venerable).
Need some Slaadi script translated? Or maybe some Kenku? Sphinx! I'll do Sphinx twenty percent off this week!

Re: Random NPC Thread.
Sweet! Somebody named a thread after me! IM FAMOUS!
in the situation where they need a specialist that they can't just go to the store to find (like a gemcutter) doesn't it just take a gather info check with a DC: DMs choice? then the party finds someone who can do whatever non combat thing it is they need done. my partys searched a town for a few days before and not gotten what they wanted, they've also accadently been found by an informant they needed a half hour later.

i find it ironic that, before me, the only person to replay to "Random NPC Thread." was someone named "RandomNPC"

Re: Random NPC Thread.
Named NPCs not only further the plot, they increase the verisimilitude of the setting. That's why we prepare things like this.
I do things a bit differently than you do, SoD. I have a random list of names and a list of stats for stock NPCs. It works out because my players don't get to see what stats NPCs have.
Fixed it for you.

Re: Random NPC Thread.
Of course, by the time I finish this post, it will already be obsolete. C'est la vie.

Re: Random NPC Thread.
that's a really great link, thanks. I have a very long list of names by region/culture for my world that I give to NPCs. and a stat block sheet incase something like that comes up, but this generator is faster/more complete for stats. sweet
