One Piece Live Action
We watched it this week on Netflix, found it pretty well made for something originated as anime. Anyone else seen this?

Re: One Piece Live Action
Certain side characters being written out of the story.
The Don Krieg pirates were a much bigger part of the Baratie arc and were mostly cut out.
I understand it is impossible to do a perfect 1 to 1 adaptation of an anime, and honestly the anime isnt perfect so i wouldnt want them too. But some of the characters felt a lot different in the live action i would say? Garp was way more serious, Luffy did not have the same happy go lucky energy as the original. A positive side effect to this is Sanji not being as over the top when it comes to women :P In the anime he goes full heart shaped eyes, calling every girl angel and fainting when they so much as wink. I like the failed charmer version a lot better.
As with most adaptations of books or anime to live action, a lot has to be cut out to streamline and shorten it into a few hours. But some fun parts are lost that way. Wich is not a loss for new viewers, but for fans of the original it can be a downside.
Positive changes are how they introduce wanted posters for people, ship design looking a bit more realistic, and giving some lore/foreshadowing where the anime did not because upcoming arcs were not thought of yet.

Re: One Piece Live Action
One thing that's really changed is that East Blue has sort of been modernised.
In the original it's much more of an episodic "problem town of the week" set of stories, but pretty much everything after it is arcs that connect together towards a showdown with a big bad (or breathers between same).
The Live Action version makes East Blue work like that, and if you were going to cut any part of it it's definitely Don Krieg, since he's the least interesting East Blue villain and only really exists as a cautionary tale about the dangers of the Grand Line.

Re: One Piece Live Action
The changes to Luffy and Sanji were needed imo. With current political climes Sanji would of came off as sleazy; atleast this way he still seems classy when it comes to them without being a full blown predator, a la pepe le pew. And Luffy is... not a complete lost cause? We felt it was fine as a whole though. Mihawk was fun too.

Re: One Piece Live Action
How are they handling the devil fruit powers? I know very little about one piece, but if there's a lot of Plastic Man stretching going on that's going to be a hefty CGI budget sink.

Re: One Piece Live Action
It was fairly well done.
Watched it last Friday and as a longtime fan of the manga...it was fine. Better than fine for a Live Action adaption but it was missing something. The crew didn't have enough time to be the crew at one another. A lot of time was taken up by Koby who exited in like...Chapter 3 and Garp who makes an appearance on the cover of Chapter 92 but we know nothing about until Post-Enis Lobby. The show giving so much time for the Marines took away a lot of time the show could have used to make the crew actually interact beyond the immediate plot. The decision to make Syrup Village two episodes was also a baffling choice considering how much they cut from Syrup Village.

Re: One Piece Live Action
For someone who has never watched the anime or read the manga, is the live action show a decent way to get into things? I've always stayed away from One Piece because I have neither the time nor desire to commit to a series that long.
I'm not entirely ignorant of the characters and premise; a close friend used to be a superfan and based significant portions of his first D&D campaign around a fusion of One Piece and The Princess Bride (including straight-up making Zoro and Sanji NPCs that allied with the party). I've also played the first One Piece: Pirate Warriors game with said friend, so I'll recognize a few characters and maybe a couple plot points as well.

Re: One Piece Live Action
Yeah, the live action version is very much intended to be understood and appreciated by people with no prior knowledge of the series.
If it makes you want more, the manga is the way to go over the anime. Much faster to breeze through 15 pages at a time.

Re: One Piece Live Action
As someone who bounced off the anime pretty hard but whose partner is a Straw Hat fanatic and has been whittling me down, I found this a much more accessible way of getting into the universe.
As far as the effects I think they're much better than we could have hoped for. Yeah there's dodgy CGI in places, but they build actual ships for the sets, animatronic snails for the communication devices, and all the actors do their own stunts so you get beautiful long-take action scenes. It's a technical marvel for something so uncharacteristically cartoony in the source material.
I'll also add something Netflix really should have promoted more heavily - they put out an animated companion piece that I consider required viewing for newcomers or anyone who needs a refresher, i.e. a truncated summary of the East Blue Arcs to help people who don't want to wade through dozens of anime episodes to know who these people are and what their deal is.Plague Doctor by Crimmy

Re: One Piece Live Action
I just watched the first episode. I'm not very familiar with the original (I knew the name and the basic concept but that's about it) and wasn't sure I'd like it but I must admit it was very fun. Goofy, but not too goofy, which isn't always an easy balancing act.

Re: One Piece Live Action
I'm amazed at how well they balanced the tone to keep things feeling goofy and loose without making it cringe or unfunny. After the casting I think the humor might be the strongest aspect of the show.

Re: One Piece Live Action
Could likely write pages on changes that i like and changes that i dont xD
Overall it is great. Basically every actor nails it. The action scenes are also surprisingly good.
Where i guess it helps the crew does a lot of their own stunts and fighting.thnx to Starwoof for the fine avatar

Re: One Piece Live Action
Having now watched every episode.
God, what a fantastic adaptation of the show. I adore how they did basically all of this.are ESPECIALLY good touches. It felt like it was playing into a variant of the cover-arcs, among other things.SpoilerKoby being allowed a bit more screen time, and being the one who gives Luffy his wanted poster
The teases at the end,, it all is building up to what is going to be a brilliant season 2.Spoilerof Buggy meeting Alvida (who I hope stays the same after getting the Slip-slip fruit because honestly her actress is gorgeous), the tease of Smoker, the seeding of Baroque Works throughout and the fact that we may have actually seen Crocodile in this season... in a way that suggests "Crocodile trans" is true
I can't wait for Netflix to pay their employees properly so it'll happen.

Re: One Piece Live Action
I personally liked that they, like the manga, early made sure to show us,
that while Luffy can bring down an entire building, and Zorro clear out a gang of fishmen pirates.
Then they are still just small fish in the grand scheme of things.
Now i do hope the show get the sort of budget they need for making Logia come to life.
Well and for properly making Alabasta.thnx to Starwoof for the fine avatar

Re: One Piece Live Action
Given the work put into the sets they used for filming I think they will be fine for money. Also I think the tone is set right for the logia to look hella goofy and stylized and it actually work which could also help with those costs.

Re: One Piece Live Action
I'm so glad that it appears most (if not all) of the people involved in this production respected the source material.
OPLA didn't do a 1:1 adaptation and it didn't really need to. OPLA really captured the fun and adventurous spirit of One Piece. The dialogue and humor is so different, but somewhat still familiar.
Damn near every cast (looking at you, Benn Beckmann) were good to great. OPLA made me interested in Helmeppo and Kuro...how!? I'm so glad to be wrong being skeptical of the actors for Shanks and Sanji. Koby, Mihawk, Zeff, kid Sanji, and Luffy were just pulled straight out of the manga pages.
OPLA also really nailed the most iconic scenes in the manga: Zoro vs Mihawk, Zoro's vow, Nami asking for help, Sanji's flashback, and that scene of Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp getting ready to commit murder for Nami.
I was afraid it wouldn't appeal to a broad audience because it still feels too anime-y at times, so the massive global success that led to a quick season 2 announcement was a welcome surprise.
Can't wait to see Jamie Lee Curtis as Kureha.
This, too.

Re: One Piece Live Action
Started watching this the other night, and was sort of surprised by how good it was. I'd never seen the anime, so I'm coming in fresh, but the characters are a delight, and honestly, I rarely enjoy live action adaptations of animes, so this was unusual.
This had to be a tough adaptation. Characters, CGI, wild sets...this was most definitely not an easy thing to make.
If netflix prematurely cancels this, I will be salty.

I'm so glad to be wrong being skeptical of the actors for Shanks and Sanji.
Someone smaller would not have been a believable fighter in the same way.
Or able to do Sanji's kicks the way the life actor is.
(saw some behind the scene of him doing kick training)

Re: One Piece Live Action
One thing I will say, something about how mihawk looks was seriously uncanny valley. i think its the eyes. The scenes were excellent, it just felt like he was wearing a mask or something the entire time of his own face. I love his voice though.

Re: One Piece Live Action
I was very impressed by Mihawk. I loved that disaffected, bored attitude he had.
"If you weren't protected by the immunity of the World Government-"
"...I'd still do precisely what I want. No more, no less."
I also liked the interaction between him and Shanks.

"I could still take you... with one arm tied behind my back!"
"Don't think of it as dying," said Death,
"Just think of it as leaving early to avoid the rush."
