Blonde hair and violet eyes hmm, wonder where we have seen those traits before. Loose tongues can sink ships, but they can also see fortunes rise for the opportuinistic.
How does your characters lacking ability to steal play out? Is it the physical drawback or an inflexible moral compass? Given your age people will be more understanding of your disposition, but it may still be a topic of conversation.

As Casyrs uncle is the one in charge of house matters I will say that the septon has head for numbers. When you make stewardship rolls relating to house fortunes he will advice you and you may use his quality as if it was your own on that roll. If you want to substitute this quality for another that is fine.

How does Casyr feel about not being considered an adult and having a septon without the family name rule in his place?

Spoiler: Amber Heartly, Master of Horse
    Show

    Name: Amber Heartly.

Goal: Good. Motivation: Love. Virtue: Courageous. Vice: Avaricious.

    Step 3: Abilities: 180 experience.

    Step 4: Specialities: 60 exp.

    Ride (Animal): 3 Ė 30 exp.
    Train (Animal): 1 Ė 10 exp.
    Charm (Animal): 2 Ė 20 exp.

    Step 5: Benefits

    Attractive, Animal Cohort, Beastfriend.

    Step 6: Drawback:

Disturbing Habit: Amber has a disturbing compulsion to wear menís clothing, bat eyes at dresses, and compete in contests from the equestrian to the joust. Even if the jousts were as a mystery Ďknightí. So Houses might use her skill, but Westeros will never approve.

    Backstory Events:

In a quick summary, Amber had a landed knight for a dad that was famous at jousting, and she was a common sight in horse riding contests when growing up. But he was maimed about three years ago, which stopped him from competing, and caused her motherís debts to pile up. Both Amber and her younger brother had to help. Eventually, because they were simply more common, her parents accepted she would enter jousts alongside her little brother, but do so as a mystery knight. The winnings kept their family afloat, yet Amber was becoming increasingly unhappy. But placing incredibly well in a regional riding contest allowed her parents to leverage their political acumen and get her to freedom as a Master of Horse. She hasnít explicitly competed since, but with the realm wide tournament upcoming, and the thought of finally making her own wealth, she started speaking to the people in charge of the House (Septon, Lady, Lord) to see what was acceptable...

    You were in famous company.

Ser Idris the Iron Lance awed many crowds a decade back. He was the terror of regional jousts, and cunning enough to know what battles not to fight. But Amber mostly knew him for a loving father and a good man, forever amused by his presistent moniker, and keen to say he had broken more tourney lances in his life than most men had bread. A saying he needled. For the wide gap between what dreamy eyed fools said, and what schemers plotted, was as a hug to a blade in the spine.

So Landed knight or no, her comely yet humble mother happily agreed: Amber was never spoiled. As overjoyed as she was when she sat atop her very own adorable palfrey named Sarah, the smile faltered every night she shovelled manure out of the stables. However pleasing the applause of placing finely in local equestrian tournaments, drilling trials for hours caused stiffness and rashes, and winning drew jealous eyes from the very girls she wanted to befriend. Steel was even silently shoved into her hands outside the view of trusted company, for her parents had seen that knights are not always near when needed, though the weapons were always banned around polite company.

Throughout, Amber handled animals, for their horse herds were their lifeblood. Her mother liked to advise her to marry the man that loved animals, for how kindly he treated them secretly showed how he might children. It took some years to understand Amberís growing consternation, before instead saying it was a skill that brought money and friendship. But more than once had the shadow of something large and predatory darkened the skies, and her father would quietly admit, and only after its passing, that money and friends were grand, but in Westeros, it was also necessary to know how to charm monsters. These were some of the lessons taught by the renown Iron Lance.

    You accomplished a significant deed.

The trouble started in force around age fourteen. An accident saw her father maimed in what became his final regional joust. Ser Idris lost his shield arm, but helped discover and destroy a ratís nest of conspirators in revenge. This did nothing to answer the snarling debts of his lady wife, however. Amber understood gloomily why she had never seen a single copper piece for any riding contests over the years, but refreshed by her newly anointed younger brother, they met their familyís financial challenges unflinchingly. While the duo were fierce and favoured in local tourneys, the jousts were mockingly more common than the riding competitions Amber knew.

It took two disappointing showings to put their House on the edge. Ser Idris and Lady Lauren agreed then that Amber could no longer act as mere support. Any trustworthy page could tend to her brotherís horses wonderfully. Their little House suddenly gained a mystery knight in the jousting scene Ė and however shaky his showings with a lance, his ass was all but married to the saddle. A year of jousting dashed by, and Amber was frustrated. Whatsoever she won, she only ever made unnamed debtors rich. Whichever girls she liked most fondly, she barely knew because they only competed in riding contests. Whomever she actually meet in her many jousts, she was tight lipped with, lest too much stigma splash unto her loved ones, but rumours swirled. The Seven had mercy.

A regional equestrian contest emerged, and literal years of hard competition and training culminated in Amber bathing in glory. What gold didnít go to her family debt was shared out among the friends that protected her backstage. With the sudden acclaim and attention, her parents leveraged their political skill and arranged for her to become a Master of Horse, with House Scales quite interested in the potential for Amber to grow. Shocked as she was, it was revealed her brother had aired her grievances quietly, and her parents wanted it clear how much they cherished her.

Nearly two years passed, and Amber blissfully ignored the competitive scene, beyond occasionally supporting the noble sisters and knights of House Scales in their own ambitions. This, and the same friends that had helped protect her backstage. But with a realm wide competition looming, the allure of making her own money enticed her to speak directly with the Septon, Lady, and young Lord...

    Family:

Ser Idris Ė a famous knight with land to his name. Wise, Scheming, Maimed.
Lady Lauren Ė a charming lady from an impoverished family. Humble, Cowardly, Debt.
Ser Alex Ė her brother, somehow anointed despite being younger by three years. Merciful, Wrathful, Furious.

The female knight thrope is not too much and a common theme in these games exactly because it creates so good RP opportunity. Just a warning: Sexism is a sensitive topic for many, so I will treat it far more gently than Brienne got treated- We dont know who the other PCs are. However although it will be milder it will still be unacceptable by todays standards. Someone finding out may have deep consequences for your character. If you are uncomfortable with others discriminating if they find out then please tell me.

I like the backstory- thank you for giving me plenty of plot hooks. Just out of curiosity where was ser Alex squiring?

To go into the boring mechanics: You need armour if you plan on competing in the tournament or in the melee. If a lance hits (admittedly you are great at dodging hits) then it hurts a lot. Btw woodland creatures have two qualities that may be of interest to you:

Interesting. I like how you help create room for inhouse intrigue between the PC and the NPC. By the sound of it there will also be a broad array of skills in the house- You and wymmer as public figures representing the house with your intrigue. Ameraa and Leonard being your muscle. Yoywonderlove as the tournament rider and Batcat as the sneaky figure in the dark.

    Edit:
So with 3 characters practically done, and Tommen coming soon I'm wondering how a soft start this friday fits everybodys schedule. I'm particularly curious to know how that suits batcat and Leonard.

Thanks, though my main problem when applying for a new game is usually making up my mind about which idea I wanna go with, so you might've been doing me a favor by narrowing things down.

That's probably fine. If I just decide on a concept, writing things down should be fairly quickly (though considering it'll literally be the first time I'm actually making a character in this system, I'd be surprised if I don't screw something or other up).

Speaking of deciding on a concept, one thought I had was that since most protagonists are usually young-ish adults, it might be interesting to go another way. So I was thinking either a male rogue in his early teens or a female schemer in her 70s or so. Now that there's no other schemer to compete with, I might go with the latter. Maybe a widow of some powerful man or other? (I'll probably have to be careful so I don't accidentally rip of Olenna Tyrell, though to be honest my current mental image is closer to Granny Weatherwax of Discworld fame).

Well, given the bloody history of your young house there have been several mighty lords felled- A widowed wife or even a grieving mother might very well be left to them. Wymmerdam and Gareth wrote quite the compelling backstory on page one.

Alright... Below is the sheet with the backstory, hopefully I did my math correctly. I also am fine starting this Friday... though I might be slow due to having an exam at 5:45PM. Shouldn't take too long though. I am in the GMT+1 time zone for the record! I also have set it up in such a way that I get an email notification whenever a new post arrives in the thread.

    Backstory

Theron was not a very rich man but he was not poor either. He once upon a time was one of many similar to him iron born raiders he eventually settled after realizing that as long as the Targaryans rule they wonít be able to follow the old way. Thus Theron became a hired blade within the city of Bravoos, eventually becoming the captain of a merchantís personal guard. His life was fairly peaceful, until a faithful day.

One cold night when a storm was raging above the city he heard a knock at his door. When he opened it he found a basket with a child within upon his doorstep. The child was a boy and the only thing other than the child and the linens it was wrapped in was a note in high valyrian. Not being able to read such a tongue Theron burned the note and named the child Ethelstan Pyke upon learning it was a boy.

The boy would turn out to be indeed of valyrian descent, for he had white hair and purple eyes which were a tell tale sign of his blood line. Not that Theron cared about that. Iron born are not known to be great parents but the now middle aged manís drinking was obviously a problem. And whenever Theron would drink too much, he would get into a rage. Ever since the boy was 8 he would dread this rage, for when in it Theron would often beat him up.

This only lasted two years though, for the curse of alcohol is deadly. Theron died after in a drunken state fell off the stairs and broke his neck. This left the boy without a home. Ethelstan would do anything he could for a piece of food, coin or a bed. Which is why he would often end up in fights, for even a dirty loaf of bread which fell onto the ground was worth getting bruised over.

Eventually when he had turned 16 he decided to go in a similar career path as his father figure. Not because he was into that sort of thing but cause it paid well. You see due to the six years of poverty he got quite greedy, for every coin he could get and save was in his opinion a blessing. Thus he started working for a traveling merchant, whoís caravans traveled from Bravoos through Volantis to Ashai. And it was in that last place where he would eventually stop for longer.

One of the many red priests there had enemies and paid Ethelstan to guard him. The job was rather uninteresting until this priest decided to do something rather unusual among the people of AshaiÖ He wanted to explore what truly is within Stygai, a city supposedly so evil that even those who command Shadows dare not explore.

Ethelstan had to accompany the priest there, not quite sure how to get out of this job. Letís just say that for the entire year he was there he experienced things which one does not simply speak of. He was left with some serious mental scarring from this experience and till this day he whispers of wraiths, strange worms and many other creatures straight from the nightmares of a mad maester.

When he was found in a rather bad state on the shores of the river Ash people thought he wouldnít make it. Thankfully a medic managed to heal him back to a good state. After this he would once again work for some traveling merchants. A bad choice according to him. For during one caravanís walk through the land they ended up in a fight with some Dothrakhi.

Not his first battle but it was by far and still is the worst one he was in. Many good men died, including the merchant, but Ethelstan survived by some strange miracle. A large warrior with a long braid would leave a scar upon his face, one which runs from right below his left eye to his chin Ė according to some this is the reason why people find him unpleasant as company.

After this fiasco he decided to find work in something with less travelingÖ And ended up as a guard in a prison in one of the many cities in the east of Essos. There he would show a quality of his which was always present, though never given much space to flourish. He took after his father figure, he was cruel. Very as a matter of fact. Not that he simply walk up to prisoners and torture them. Oh no, he believed simply that people should be punished more brutally for certain crimes.

Those who hurt women and children dreaded him, for he would make sure their stay was miserable. Though it will be better if one does not speak of the exact torture methods used by the young valyrian. Partly because of this, and partly because they couldnít pay him enough, the prison fired him. Seeing potential for new employment he sailed to Westeros, were the last great house of Old Valyria ruled.
He did a few smaller jobs while there, especially in the Storm Lands. During one of his visits to a town he heard that the local maester was looking to hire a body guard for the young lord whoís father had recently passed. And so he was now working as the body guard of the 14 year old lord Scales.

Will do a further update later - just a reminder for those players who haven't rolled their 1d6 for house resources to do so - we don't need to allocate it yet, but it will be good to know what we have. It's important to do before finalising characters, because it can give bonuses - e.g. our horse husbandry reduces the cost of coursers by 60%. An artisan, which we cannot yet afford, might give us castle forged weapons, etc.

Here's Tommen Storm, modified from the Maester Archetype:
    Spoiler: Tommen Storm
    Show
    Name: Tommen Storm

    Character concept:

Bastard half-brother of the previous lord, an intelligent and loyal house retainer kept from his full potential by the stigma of his birth.

    Abilities:
    Cunning 4 Decipher 1B, Memory 1B
Healing 3 Treat Ailment 1B, Treat Injury 1B
    Knowledge 4 Education 2B
    Language 3 Common Tongue
    Language 2 Ancient Valyrian
    Persuasion 3 Convince 1B
    Status 2 Stewardship 1B
    Will 3
    All others 2

    Benefits
    Knowledge Focus (Heraldry), Knowledge Focus
(History and Legends), Knowledge Focus (Geography).

    Drawback: Bastard Born

Forty years ago, the current Lord's grandfather returned from a lengthy military campaign with a baby boy. He introduced the baby as "Tommen Storm", and refused to give any more details. The Lord never actually said that Tommen was his bastard son, but everyone naturally concluded that from the way he raised the boy. The only complicating factor is that the military campaign was only seven months long. Tommen was treated as the Lord's son in every way except formal events and interactions with other Houses.
When the current Lord's father inherited the Lordship, he recognised Tommen's intelligence and loyalty by formally employing him as a house retainer and tutor to his son. Tommen was horrified at the murder of his Lord, and offended at the Dowager Lady being displaced as Regent. The young Lord's uncle may be a legitimate relative, but he hasn't lived in the Scales lands for decades, and even literally gave up his family name to become a Septon. Tommen is convinced he is much more qualified to supervise the young Lord's upbringing.

Indeed. Would playing Lady Scales herself be alright? Having had a taste of actual power as regent only to be displaced could be a good motivation for a schemer. It'd probably make her younger than I had in mind, but that could work.

I was seriously wondering why we hadn't explored who Lady Scales is, even when the book said we should/need to. You playing her would be fantastic for that.

Also, I think Leonard asked if House rolls can be split, but I don't think so unless Andre house rules it. It's otherwise all in one stat. nd for bstcathat, dumping our stuff into Wealth can get Wymmerdan the Artisan Smith he wants (costs 10 wealth). We probably already have enough for that - need to double check.

I want less practical house upgrades (QoL stuff) rn but not a big deal. Going to decide where to put mine later. I always liked Influence, Defence, Power and Wealth, but we'll see.

Alright, I think I'll go with her then, could be interesting. I'm thinking about maybe having her be of House Wendwater by birth, just to tie her even more into things and potentially adding some interesting complications.

EDIT: No, wait. She would be the sister of Lord Fell mentioned in the house history, right?

EDIT: No, wait. She would be the sister of Lord Fell mentioned in the house history, right?
That's what we have so far. If you wanted to make her mother a Wendwater that would be fine.

If you want to play the mother that's great. I'd like to discuss characters in a little more detail - the main dynamic I've been working toward is that Casyr had a severe childhood illness, and so he has been doted on/pampered since, which has contributed to him feeling smothered and impatient, and particularly enraged at the temerity of the Wendwaters and Bywaters to confront his men when they went to avenge their lord. He's got a big chip on his shoulder, and a lot to prove.

    Spoiler: Casyr's Family
    Show
Casyr Scales is born of Lord Owen Scales, and Lady Scales nee Fell. His grandfather Lord Tancred was married to Lady Falyse Errol, while his motherís parents were Lord Harwyn Fell and Lady Edwyne Fell nee Wendwater. He numbers among his ancestors Ser Hyle Waters, bastard son to King Aegon IV, and is therefore a distant relative of House Targaryen, though his family falls far below the Targaryens, Baratheons, and even Blackfyres in order of succession. Nevertheless, by some stroke of luck or misfortune, he bears the violet eyes of that bloodline.

Casyr was born a sickly infant, one whom the maesters said would surely not live to see his second nameday. He has always been pampered, if not smothered, by his mother and sisters and wanted for nothing as an infant. As a young child he learned little of the games of theft and sneaking treats, as he had no need for them, while his stormy father repudiated both sneakery and the pampering of women. Nevertheless, from the age of eight Casyr waited on his father as cupbearer, learning from him the matters of statecraft, and from his knights the rudiments of riding, tilting, and swordcraft. His father was always solemnly disappointed, finding in Casyr a pale shadow of himself, and Casyr has always felt that he continued seeking heirs because he was unsatisfied with his son.

At the age of 12 Casyrís father was ambushed and killed by the Kingswood Brotherhood. House Scales sent knights to pursue the brotherhood, but these were confronted at Wendwater Bridge by soldiers of House Wendwater, who forbade them access to the Kingswood, as it was the Crownland Domain. Enraged, Casyr donned mail and arms himself and made ready to lead his men in an assault on House Wendwater, only to be forbidden by his mother, who assumed the regency of the House, and had Casyr all but confined to the castle for the next six months.

In his motherís apparent hysteria, Casyr also found his faith in his family badly shaken. He had always resented his fatherís indifference and motherís smothering nature. Like her husband, she seemed to think him too weak to rule, and he suspected that she would arrange a marriage to his cousin, a girl of House Fell, and subordinate House Scales beneath the Fell banner. Perhaps perceiving the same outcome, his liege intervened, ensuring an alternative regency that provided wise counsel and a firm hand to guide House Scales.

This too rankled Casyr, who has felt confined and imprisoned at every turn. In his brooding, he has stoked a fire of resentment. Neverthless, he is a bright and charming young man, open-minded, generous, and dedicated to his familyís name. Feeling betrayed, corralled, and Ďmanagedí at every turn, he has learned to watch others closely, seeking to better understand their motivations, even as he struggles beneath the twin burdens of lordship and adolescence.

How does your characters lacking ability to steal play out? Is it the physical drawback or an inflexible moral compass? Given your age people will be more understanding of your disposition, but it may still be a topic of conversation.

As Casyr's uncle is the one in charge of house matters I will say that the septon has head for numbers. When you make stewardship rolls relating to house fortunes he will advice you and you may use his quality as if it was your own on that roll. If you want to substitute this quality for another that is fine.

How does Casyr feel about not being considered an adult and having a septon without the family name rule in his place?
The eyes would come to him by his ancestor, a bastard of Aegon IV - the worst king. The hair is probably his paternal grandmother? An Errol - not Valyrian.

I've tried to write the stealing as both a result of being pampered - simply never having to sneak something, and his father's stern disapproval of shenanigans in favour of strict honour and martial prowess.

Thank you for the stewardship assist! I may refocus Casyr a little. I was imagining him as an Ender or Paul Atreides, but now I'm drifting more toward a Hal/Henry V from Netflix's The King or Vincent Anton from Gattaca. I'll hence refocus from big brains to charm and empathy.

Casyr has mixed feelings. He's not truly ready to rule in his own right, but feel's slighted by the shenanigans of his regency, and the idea that a neighbouring house could disrespect and dishonour them without reprisal. He is probably prone to making rash decisions and big risks to prove himself.

    Explanation of Build
I've been very cheeky and spent resources we don't yet have for power and wealth and would need to be supported by the free player roll. We are currently 2 short on power to qualify for a master at arms, and 3 wealth short to pay for the crypt. Overall, our military situation is strong, but our economics are a bit more precarious, leading us to probably see military action as the best way to improve our situation.

Adding my 1d6 to Wealth: [roll0]
It's well put together; we're as safe as we're going to be short of getting a bigger castle. If everyone stays the same then.......

Wymmerdan rolled 2 afterwards, going to Wealth.

Ameraaa rolled 1, going to power.

Leonard rolled 5, with 2 to power and 3 to wealth, and Andre confirmed that's fine. That has covered all our deficit really nicely, so tyvm Leo!

Gareth rolled 1, and put it into Wealth.

JoyWonderLove rolled 4, and likes the idea of teamwork. So I can purchase smaller things with the 4 but I want to throw ideas out to bstcathat.

@Batcathat rolled 3, and you're kind of a king/queenmaker if we team up our rolls. If we both throw our rolls at wealth, we could have a boring Maester, because who doesn't love raven pellets everywhere? or maybe even go with the Artisan Smith because woooo yeah great! sharp bits of steel for everybody. Surely your sickly child could never trip and hurt himself with those. Or we could even lean into our villanous recent past a little and go for something more iffy (assassins, sabatuers) that might fit your schemers and Gareth's schemer approach more. All ok options.

But what if there was another way? A BETTER way?

What if we could throw our rolls at Defence! Imagine it, Batcathat! Imagine your very own real fairytale castle with enchanted waterfalls, rainbow coloured pixies, and free Disney princess chirping birds with every sunrise! Your friends will love you, the neighbours will envy you, the Wendwaters will fear you! Or, you can just...accept less in your life. I suppose there's nothing wrong with this bargain basement dinky pile of stacked rocks we found abandoned by the riverside. I'm sure there's not THAT many bandits hiding among it or anything.

we could also be even more super boring and go our separate ways and maybe stop ignoring our incredibly sus law score or something idk

Sorry for working across different threads, but I posted a second draft for the house in the other thread, which presumes an artisan, rather than a bigger castle.

I am happy with either option though, so if we want to ditch the artisan (which we can get later anyway) in favour of a bigger castle (which we probably can't) I'm all for it. I'll leave the decision with Bat and Joy.

Should we continue this discussion here or in OOC?

    Fun ideas both!
We can try to use the OOC thread from now on, then we keep it aĺl in one place.

Sorry, last thing I'll post here. I just realized that my idea is hugely on if I have the money or not. If not I'll need to change the idea.
