Default [Avatar d20 Project] Iconic Characters

Now that the project is relatively far along and abilities are relatively well-defined, I thought it'd be interesting to see how we could build the iconic characters of the Avatar: the Last Airbender setting. Using our system and already-existing resources, how would you stat the characters from the show?

    Guidelines
    • Builds should be (at most) ECL 20. Some characters require all 20 levels, others don't, but none should go above ECL 20.
    • Use any source necessary, but try to limit non-core, non-setting material. I realize some builds are impossible without non-core material, but let's do our best.
    • Feats and Prestige Classes should be selected carefully, with each poster using his or her best judgment about how well a specific piece of content fits with the setting. Obviously, no casting classes are allowed.
    • In order to maximize accuracy to the show, each build should have two parts. First, an evaluation of capabilities in the form of a list of demonstrated skills. The level of detail is up to the poster. Second, the build itself.
    • The following format should be used:

    Spoiler
    Show
    Gender race class
    Alignment size type (subtype
    Init Senses
    Languages Common
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    AC

    Special Attacks
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Abilities Str X, Dex X, Con X, Int X, Wis X, Cha X
    SQ

Additionally, this is a good place to post builds for generic characters as well. Mooks, soldiers, NPC's, generals, political leaders, military and police forces, bandits, mercenaries, arena fighters/professional wrestlers, and any other potentially useful and interesting builds can be posted here. Builds can be of any ECL, intended for any circumstance, or just for fun!

Actually, it should be 1d4, not 1d3, since I think all benders get improved unarmed strike sooner or later, last I remember. Maybe, I thought they did...

Yeah, but unarmed strike still only deals 1d3 damage, unless you're a monk or have superior unarmed strike.

I guess you're right... I think it's silly that you get a d3 even when have to get it from a feat, I think I'm more used to the D20 Modern unarmed strike trees, where it's upped to a d4.

Enhanced Tremorsense: Due to Toph's extensive knowledge of earthbending, learned directly from badgermoles, she has overcome her blindness through using earthbending. While she has both feet on solid ground (anything with a bendable material for her), Toph can see as if she had the Blindsight trait. She uses her Earthbending skill in place of the Spot skill in all aspects.

    ---

After having made both Aang and especially with Toph, it's occurring to me that perhaps we've given Earthbenders and Firebenders too few of seeds... I'll bring this up in the bender thread.

Looks pretty good, X. I was hesitant to stat up Aang because of the complexities of being the Avatar, but you did good work! Out of curiosity, why did you only make Aang a 16th level Airbender? He seems to have a high level of mastery in the show. Obviously, it's not a huge deal (being that he's the Avatar and all), but I'm just curious.

With Toph, I think the only thing that's missing is her enhanced blindsight/tremorsense. This, however, is more of an omission on the part of the project than on your part. Perhaps we should start work on that over in the bending thread. Also, I know this is slightly off-topic for this thread, but I think Toph is an exception rather than the rule when it comes to knowledge of bending seeds. We don't seen nearly the variety of forms from other earthbenders that we see from Toph. I'm inclined to attribute this to her unorthodox learning style, but that's just me.

Nice work! I'll add them to the website.

Posted an idea about Toph's enhanced tremorsense.

Also, the reasons for why Aang's only level 16 is due to his division of studies between water and earth, and because we're doing ECL 20, that he'd need some room to grow to accommodate his firebending, as per the Avatar template I wrote up in the previous bending thread.

Ah, I see. Great work, then.

I like the Enhanced Tremorsense ability. What if we were to make it an earthbender-only character trait wherein the character loses their normal powers of sight and gains the ability to use the tremorsense form continually without requiring any special action (effectively, blindsight). This gives the ability a definite range, ensures that it's clear the bender must be in contact with the earth. Thoughts?

Edit: How about this character trait to represent Toph?

    Blind Earthbender
You've adapted to your lack of normal vision by enhancing your ability to sense vibrations through the earth.
    Requirement:Earthbender level 1
Benefit: You gain the blindsight special ability with a range equal to your bending range. This ability functions only when you are in physical contact with a material you can bend, and only allows you to "see" creatures and objects that are also in physical contact with material you can bend. Creatures and objects must be in physical contact with the same contiguous area of earth as you in order for them to be visible to your blindsight. If you are wearing shoes of any kind or are standing on sand or similarly shifty earth, all creatures within the range of your blindsight have partial concealment.
Drawback: You are blind, relying entirely on your blindsight.
Roleplaying Ideas: You might be defensive and bitter about your lack of normal vision, avoiding the topic or becoming angry when it is brough up. Alternatively, you might revel in the advantages your blindsight gives you. Some blind earthbenders use their blindness as a ploy to convince foes to underestimate them.

I'll admit it might be a little more powerful than normal traits, but I think it captures the benefits and drawback's of Toph's mode of perception.

    What says the community?

Benefit: Once per round, when you would normally be hit with a ranged attack, you may make an opposed attack roll to deflect the attack, taking no damage from it. You must be aware of the attack and not flat-footed

Attempting to deflect a ranged weapon doesn’t count as an action. Unusually massive ranged weapons cannot be deflected. You must either have a hand free or be wielding the weapon to which you have applied the Weapon Focus feat in order to deflect arrows.
Special: A fighter may select Deflect Arrows as one of his fighter bonus feats.

I placed him at 12th level because he's definitely not as powerful as Aang or Zuko, but he is a skilled fighter. I figure that, at 12th level, he could hold his own against Aang or Zuko, provided that neither of his opponents is using his abilities to the full (Aang doesn't ever want to truly defeat Jet, and Zuko can't use any of his bending when they fight in Ba Sing Se). He can easily be advanced, but 12th level seemed about right to me, and it gives him all the abilities we see him using in the show.

    Any comments?

For Deflect Arrows, you might want to specify that you must be wielding a weapon to which you have applied Weapon Focus in order to use the ability. Also, I was checking out the website links you put up in the OP (which are very impressive, by the way), and it's probably a good idea to include the feats we homebrewed in there somewhere, especially for Ty Lee and the benders.

Jet himself seems to be very well built, and twelfth level is appropriate for what we've seen from him. This brings up a topic that I'll put up on the Main Hub...

Prerequisites: Ability to use any bending Blast, Point Blank Shot, BAB +6
Benefit: You can use your bending blast to make a sunder attack against an opponents weapon or armor. Your blast must be able to deal direct damage in order to be used for sundering. Blasts count as one-handed weapons for the purpose of resolving sunder attempts. You must be within 30 ft of the target to use this feat.
Normal: You can only make a sunder attack with a slashing or bludgeoning melee weapon.

What do you think? I've been putting of statting up Zuko because I'm pretty sure peopl have definite opinions on what he should be capable of, and it's going to be difficult to reconcile those opinions in a single build. That said, critique away. Gimme your best shots.

Huh. Looks good altogether, definitely, but why all the levels in rogue? From what I could tell, it looks like Zuko only really has Rogue skills and roleplays Rogue tendencies, since we've never seen him use sneak attack, even in situations when it would have been advantageous (Lake Loagai anybody?). Actually, a one-level dip in Rogue would be enough to get Rogue class skills, leaving space open for firebender levels.

I like the Sundering Blast feat, though, and it seems like a good addition to our growing feat base for benders.

I probably wouldn't make Twin Dao exotic. Yes, it's a cool sword, but mechanically not any different from just having two sabers (any finesseable equivalent). This should probably go into items... But, it seems that the Avatar world has a lot more finesseable swords than standard DnD, (sort of like most of the weapons were elven)... The Jian, Sokka's blade would also be considered exotic; as would a few of the other more interesting, but common weapons of the verse.

I wanted him to have pretty high modifiers in some crucial Rogue skills that aren't available to firebenders, and I didn't really think he needed more firebender levels. However, I was on the fence about a few seeds (esp. Explosion, Intensity, and Incandesce), and could definitely see taking away some of his Rogue levels in favor of more firebender levels, but I think that firebender 19/rogue 1 is too much firebender. I wanted him to be a noticeably weaker firebender than Iroh and Azula, but to have some martial and stealth skills that make up for that difference.

Twin Dao. I'm just using the content we've already created. A single dao is a martial weapon, but the twin dao are exotic and intended to be wielded together. I think they're worth the feat, but it's definitely an issue that can be discussed.

That's entirely possible. I designed this Zuko before the Ranger class was a viable option, so I used the resources I had. I'd be interested to see a Ranger version of Zuko. It probably would be a more efficient route than Firebender/Rogue/Fighter.

One quibble: what's the reasoning for Zuko being Chaotic Good? Having a sense of honor, I'd have thought Zuko was Lawful.

Perhaps because he switched sides? Or because of how wild he gets?

But I could see him being Lawful, yea...

    EDIT:
Woah, after rewatching Sokka's episode in the third book, I realize a mistake I made, Sokka's strength is his dexterity, not his strength, also for some reason in that episode, Sokka had a new weapon at the beginning of it.

No, his dad uses it, so I made a new item in that thread, I am calling it the Kukri-Club until I come up with a better name

    EDIT:
After rewatching the Foggy Water Swamp tribe episode, I noticed Sokka has a machete, he just spawned one out of nothingness, thats when it hit me, his dagger! Thats no dagger, thats his machete!
Why would a person from the South Pole carry around a machete? O.o

Oh well, I am in the middle of making the appropriate adjustments for this edit, and the one above, please comment on anything else there.

Your Sokka is interesting and perfectly viable, but I don’t think I’d build Sokka that way. First, I can’t remember seeing Sokka use two-weapon fighting the way we’ve seen Zuko or Jet use it. Sure, you can find pictures of Sokka holding a weapon in each hand, but I can’t remember a scene where he actually fights that way. For this reason, I’d build Sokka without any Ranger levels. Second, Sokka has to have at least 3 levels of Martial Artist (Passive Way) to pick up the Passive Stance ability we see him using in The Warriors of Kyoshi. Third, he definitely picks up his Fighter levels as the series progresses rather than having them in the beginning. Finally, I think he ultimately focuses on his longsword rather than his boomerang as a primary weapon, making the Exotic Weapon Master level unnecessary.

That said, here’s what I would suggest for a Sokka build. My delay in responding is largely due to my desire to have a replacement build ready when I posted. Let me know what you think.

The reason why I gave him the levels in ranger, is because of the favored enemy and favored enviroment, in fact I was tempted to give him one more level in ranger so he could get fire benders as another favored enemy, also I chose two-weapon fighting because often he is seen with a boomerang in one hand and a club in his offhand. I only gave him 1 level of martial artist because I went and watched the episode where he is trained in that style, there is no way for him to have more then one level in it, in fact I was worried about giving him the one level in it from the amount of time spent learning it.

I only put the fighter class in the front of the list of his classes, because I put them in order of how most to least levels

I noticed from the show he trains in a lot of weapons and styles, which seem to make him more useless, a lot of the things he learns is unnecessary, he seems to think if he learns how to fight with anything he will be better then anyone, which in a pinch can be true, if you are weaponless and have to fight with whatever you can find, but still. But I gave him that prestige class because the weapon was his dad's and it meant a lot to him and he used it often so to me it seemed like he would try to specialize in it.

I was originally building him from a rogue, but then I switched that to ranger, a wilderness rogue is an interesting idea for it.

    EDIT:
No, he doesn't use two-weapon fighting like Jet and Zuko, but he definitely seems to be able to be a two-weapon fighter
