    Default Replacing a Familiar

I'm making a wizard and I want to replace his Summon Familiar ability with something else and I'd like a little help in doing so.
I'm only allowed to use one non SRD source, my character is level three and I don't want to specialise.

    Thanks in advance.

It prays mainly on other dinosaurs, which it strikes and kills in midair with its claws.

well, the PHB II has the Immediate Magic alternate class feature, which, depending on your specialty, ranges from kinda cool to somewhat overpowered. It replaces your familiar with a spell-like ability based on the school you specialize in.

Other than that, nothing comes to mind. Why can you only use one splatbook? Seems like kind of an odd rule.
My friend and I have a blog, we write D&D stuff there: http://forgotmydice.com/

It's an attempt to reduce the amount of book keeping the DM has to do.
We're actually allowed to use two, but I've already used one. (Stormwrack)

The problem is he doesn't want to specialise, all the familiar trade-inns I know, including immediate magic, are for specialist wizards .

You might want to consult this. Won't necessarily help you find the source for the substitution, though.

Summon familiar is a SRD "Variant Spellcaster Bonus Feat" choice so any other feat on the list that your PC meets the requirements for might qualify.

There is a reabsorption whatchamawhoosit for wizards, and the only non-specialized familiar replacement I know of. Effectively, if your spell doesn't break spell resistance, you can try to suck it back (ie, spell not wasted) and take some non-lethal damage).

If your DM accepts homebrew options, you could try out my Spellbook Familiar variant, here. Rather than having a normal familiar, your spellbook comes alive. Not uberpowerful if you're looking to twink out, but it's flavorful and (I hope) fun.

There's also the Item Familiar variant. It's Unearthed Arcana, which is in the SRD.

I think I'm going to go with the Item familiar. Fits my concept like a glove
