Do You think
Do you think Haley would have really let Belkar get wailed on by Than? Let me know your opinions.

Re: Do You think
She would have probably knocked him out again. As it was said, she was just talking smack. Honestly I doubt he would have been able to hurt him too much, pretty sure Belkar is significantly higher level. So there was no real threat involved, imo.

Re: Do You think
Well, unless Belkar being unarmed and all counted as him being helpless, in which case one quick Coup de Grace and he's gone, no matter how high level he is...of course, I suspect he would have run away before that happened!

Re: Do You think
Yes. She would have. If it is "possibility to rescue a paladin" vs. "possibility that Belkar gets killed"... yes.
(Apart from that she knows Belkar probably has too many HPs to be struck down by a single strike. Those things seem to matter in the OotS-Verse. ;)).

Re: Do You think
Considering how he admitted that he would have accepted Tsukiko's offer if he'd have remembered about the MoJ, she probably wouldnt have been that bothered about Belkar getting killed (admittedly, the chances of Tsukiko forgiving him are practically non-existant, and he is useful for dealing with undead enemies).

Re: Do You think
Face it:
A) Haley is CG, with a strong weight on the good-part.
B) Belkar is an evil, murdering monster with a lot of fun in being cruel and murdering. Belkar is a serial killer, a total maniac.
So, combine A with B and tell me one reason why Haley should like Belkar. Belkar is exactly the "evil thing" that she normally kills, just to make sure the evil-thing is gone.

Re: Do You think
Ah, but the difference here is that Belkar isn't some random encounter for Haley to kill - he's a companion who's been travelling with her for a long time, who she has gotten to know, and who has fought with her and saved her life before. That last point in particular is enough to make any good character not kill Belkar without some serious thought.
Anyway, I'm willing to bet that Haley figured if Thahn did attack Belkar that one hit isn't enough to kill him, but mostly she's just messing with Belkar. You can't reason with the guy like a normal person - you need to stoop to his level and treat him like he treats others. He can understand that.Leech Link by The RandomizerAvatar gallery:Spoiler

Re: Do You think
Agreed. I think we've seen twice now that the best way to get through to Belkar is to make him think he might have done enough to finally make you willing to abandon him to his fate.
I think she might have been willing to let him take a hit, but she was right there - she wouldn't have let him die. She does seem to carry some affection for Belkar, in a weird sort of way.

Re: Do You think
right. Haley is using her bluff on Belkar ;)
I personally don't think Haley will let Belkar die. Belkar is part of the team that Roy put together and Haley is put in charge as 2nd in command. It is her job to keep the team together and get Roy resurrected. (someday)
Now... here is something to think about.
Belkar is CE BUT Belkar is part of Haley's team. It is better to have Belkar on YOUR team than the enemy (to Belkar it doesn't make much difference as long he can amuse himself) Last thing Haley needs is another high level character fighting against her.
Also keep in mind that Belkar is pretty high level. I'm sure Belkar can take a few hit from Thane and will be ok. (There are clerics to heal him)Chibi rules.

Re: Do You think
I agree that she is mostly just messing with him, and saving Than at the same time. As a leader she needs to keep Belkars respect and she manages do that by stoopping to his level. Also keep in mind that Belkar isn't that bright, so it's easy to pull the wool over his eyes.
You know I thought the disguise was pretty effective myself. I had to look twice to see that it was Belkar, I thought it was the cleric at first.

Re: Do You think
Nah. She's not like Belkar. As people said, she just used him for bait. It failing, she'd knock him out again.
And Belkar was not unarmed. He was holding Mr.Scruffy

Re: Do You think
Yes. Considering that Belkar is probably a great deal higher level than Thanh, he was pretty safe from being killed. But Haley wouldn't mind him getting a few cuts--she's annoyed with him, and she's pretty sure Thanh can't really hurt him. Shojo might've been truly helpless; but Belkar never was.

Re: Do You think
She was definitely bluffing, because keeping Belkar afraid of potential revenge (which he understands thoroughly) keeps him in line.
Also, Belkar was getting cocky with the whole slave thing and being carted around by Hayley, so it was her way of getting some (petty) revenge.

Re: Do You think
As noted, Haley had very good reason to think the idea would work, or that she could rescue Belkar if it didn't. Thant was still rather badly wounded, and much lower level, so Balkar can just grab a sap or other non-lethal weapon and likely win the fight even if Haley doesn't help as she presumably would.
And in the last analysis, a dead Belkar is not something that should cause tears.

Re: Do You think
She was bluffing and talking smack. Belker was by no means helpless. He wasn't bound, paralyzed or sleeping so coup doesn't apply. He can't instantly slit Belker's throat if Belker keeps moving around and his throat with it.

Re: Do You think
Belkar was in no real danger, given that he was uninjured and a much higher level than the barely conscious Thanh. Dealing nonlethal damage with a lethal weapon is only a -4 penalty, so Belkar should have had little or no trouble taking care of him without setting off the Mark. That's also assuming Haley doesn't just Sneak Attack him again.
Of course, there is one risk to Thanh. Attacking an unarmed companion, even under magical compulsion, could potentially cause him to Fall. The atonement spell would be easy since he wasn't under his own control, but it doesn't really help when none of his companions can cast it.Last edited by Voyager_I; 2008-01-25 at 09:52 PM.

Re: Do You think
I don't think that Haley would willingly allow Belkar to be killed, even if she didn't need him to help fight. She might have held back a little to see him get his butt kicked, but she probably knew that that wasn't going to happen.
Belkar and Haley's relationship reminds me a little of siblings. They bicker. They insult each other. But at the end of the day, I don't think they dislike each other.
One thing could be telling to how much they like or dislike each other: how Haley reacts if Belkar accidentally activates the Mark of Justice. Would she be all concerned over a sick, helpless Belkar, or just pissed that he managed to become even more of a problem?Last edited by Lunaya; 2008-01-26 at 02:06 AM.
