This spell launches a fan of crimson needles trailing sparks outward in front of the caster. Anybody caught within the area takes 1d6 points of fire damage per level of the caster (max 10d6), reduced by one die of damage per 5 feet between caster and target, to a minimum of 1d6.

Reminds me of the Wu Jen only spells somehow. I like it, though.

I like it. I'm gonna have to deviate from the norm though and make a suggestion. You may want to have the damage reduction start at 10ft. so that spellcasters will use it when they are not in melee.

On a side note it totally rings a bell... I have no idea where, but I've seen this spell before (or something a lot like it).

Anyway, I agree with making the reduction of damage start at 10 feet for the previously stated reason.
