Vergadain
In one of Vergadain's portfolios he is the god of non-evil thieves. But in his cleric alignments you can be a NE cleric. I know it is possible from the rules that a cleric can be 1 step away, but what could a RP reason be? Can somebody explain this or put this perspective for me.?

In the case of St. Cuthbert, he predates 3e's 1-step rule by a couple decades, so he makes a bit more sense.
