Default A Stereotypical Nerd, In Every Way Possible

Bah, I wonder if anyone else feels this way.

It seems like nature has a strange sense of humor. I'm unintentionally one of the biggest stereotypical nerds I know without dressing too much like it. I have no fashion sense (I wear combat boots with skirts and shorts ), though. And I mean beyond my interests.

I'll start off. I obviously play Dungeons and Dragons. I'm typically a dungeon master and love to homebrew creations. I don't know very many people in my town that do, and most of them creep me out (as they're pervs, and a good way to turn me off is to be a perv around me first thing). I'm an avid gamer, preferring games that take me at least six hours to finish. I hate it when games are short. I feel robbed of my money and just plain robbed when that happens. I'm obviously not a casual gamer; yes, I play for fun, but I like my games to be fairly deep, ones that get me very involved instead of something that's surface level and gets me involved yet again only on the surface.

That's not half of it. I have decided I will major in Computer Science in college. I am A+ certified and (generally) know my stuff about computers. Yeah, as you can tell, I'm very much a computer person, I've been using them since I was around four. I'm such a big science and math nerd; I took AP Calculus AB (meh, didn't learn much, didn't feel challenged enough) and AP Chemistry (which was hard but man was it fun). I can probably name more than half the elements on the periodic table. Just don't ask me any biology questions (I hated biology).

Those aren't the parts that get me. Don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to prove my geekiness/nerdocity/etc. I've just sat down and thought deep about how funny it is, in a sense.

The physical traits... well, I can run circles around that. I wear glasses (I have high level myopia, or in plain English really bad short-sightedness). I have a lot of sinus and allergy problems (ugh, sinus infections can last two weeks at a time). I have asthma. My front teeth are sort big. I'm short, thin, and pale as hell. Kinda makes me wonder sometimes if nature isn't going "heee, look what I made!" sometimes.

Does anyone else feel that way about themselves, that they are unintentionally nerdy as hell?

Of course, I could always be tons nerdier, but it's really funny how everything adds up.

    Shame on us
    For all we've done
    And all we ever were
    Just zeros and ones

Yeah, I've always been like this. Poor social skills, I excel in math/science, I'm very short/skinny, I live in my parents basement, and play D&D. Ah well. It's good to be a nerd.

Nah, when it comes to looks...I don't look nerdy. I'm the sterotypical looking beach-boy. Slightly tanned in winter, nicely tanned in summer, whenever possible, I wear shorts, hawaiian shirts, and thongs. A pair of sunnies is always with me, usually on my nose or head.

Please note, however, beach-boy, not surfer dude. Different things. I'm not muscled, nor is by hair bleached blonde from sun, sand and surf. It remains brown and curly no matter what.

Oh, I'm definitely the stereotypical nerd. I've got glasses and freckles, I'm slightly chubby, I've got a ponytail, and I'm usually found wearing shorts of some sort and a t-shirt related to either the Renaissance Festival or some other nerd pastime (including several Firefly-related shirts). I've got asthma and numerous allergies, too.

I do a lot of gaming, both RPGs, board games, card games and TCGs, and video games (which I've been playing since I was like 4 or 5). I'm NOT a big math/science nerd though - I did the AP Stats/AP Bio/AP Environmental Science stuff, but I'm more of a liberal arts sort of fella. Like, I have a degree in History and Medieval Studies and spent time at college taking high-level Latin classes, German classes I didn't need, Modern Fantasy, Archery, and stuff like that.

And I'm completely fine with all of that.

This thread begs me to bring up the eternal question...how do you define nerd vs. dork? I don't consider myself a nerd - I do all right at math, but it's not my "thing." Ditto science. I do wear glasses (some of the time) and I read faster (and more, and more eclectically) than anybody else I know. But I also wear makeup and try to stay somewhat fashion-conscious.

My dorkishness, on the other hand, is constantly on the rise thanks to my dear husband. Before we started dating, my dork profile consisted of a superficial enjoyment of Star Trek:TNG. Since we got together, I have picked up roleplaying, Magic, Dreamblade, and a frightening amount of knowledge re: Marvel superheroes, Final Fantasy, Star Wars and LOTR. I'm sure there's other stuff that I'm not thinking of at the moment, too.

(FWIW, I also enjoy watching and debating (American) football. And yes, my DH knows how lucky he is. )

Lol compared to you people I don't even know what I'm doing on these forums

I don't roleplay, I don't watch sci-fi except for an occasional Dr. Who, I don't do math/hard science stuff (I did AP Calc and actually did pretty well in it considering I lost my graphing calculator 2 months in and had to do most of the course without one, including the final, but that's about it. And I dropped out of AP Physics because I hated the way my teacher taught it), I look either like a stereotypical surfer dude (not beach boy, I don't tan very well) or party dude, depends on what I'm wearing and whether my hair is scruffy or more or less nice looking.

About the only dorky thing I do is read a lot of fantasy and non-fiction like military history and play video games like Neverwinter Nights, Oblivion and the Total War series.

    Let's see.
I enjoy math, and physics. I do fine at chemistry and biology, but I don't really like either of them.
I have freckles, tons of them, but am definitely white skinned. I'm supposed to wear glasses, but I only do when driving, and soon I'll be wearing contacts anyways.
I have a large vocabulary (lexicon, if you please), and I'm generally good at writing, speeches, and things like that. English class, basically. I read for fun, although not that much anymore. I read fantasy and science fiction, but, like I said, unfortunately I don't read all that much nowadays. And although I'm good at public speaking, I don't have the best social skills. Actually, let me clarify. I used to have almost no social skills. However, recently I've been developing them at a fair pace. One wonders if that has to do with my decline in reading, and a halt in the other nerdy activities to be detailed in the following paragraph. Oh, and I enjoy writing and poetry, but I don't seem to do much of either.
I used to play D&D. I use to DM, spending countless hours of my free time reading source materials and constructing elaborate adventures, most of which would never be used due to a lack of people I know who play it. I also used to enjoy studying Star Wars, and I was a huge Dragonlance buff. I have over 100 Dragonlance books in my room at last count, and I possess countless other fantasy books. They just don't interest me as much anymore. I don't watch TV, but I spend copious amounts of time on the Internet.
I can play guitar, and I love music, but I wouldn't necessarily call myself a "music geek." I'm not good enough to be considered that, nor do I have much knowledge of music theory. I know plenty of bands and genre and that stuff, though. I can listen to rock, jazz, classical, and electronica.
I am athletic. I play varsity badminton and soccer (football for all you normal people), and I run at a good pace. I don't have any breathing problems. Oh, and I'm something of a brand whore, but I try not too.
What does that make me? I'm still a nerd, but one slowly moving away from my origins.

Wow. That was much longer than I expected.

I am a Geek, not a nerd, according to my wife. Sounds right...

Got extremely harassed in school (grades 1-9), to the point of thinking of doing stupid things... Then ended up taking computer classes, and fit right in.
I love all forms of RPGs and CRPGs (and most other computer games too).
    I can't dance.
Fashion is what happens to other people.
I met my wife online (we started arguing about an author, she thought I was an @$$ and a year later she had moved to Sweden from the states and we got married. Not sure how it happened, but I am a very lucky guy for having her.

Most of my nerdiness is a direct result of being born with the genes of a chemist (grandma), a mathematician (dad), and a meteorologist (grandpa). Thus I am good at math, logic and science. The rest is from growing up using computers since the age of 4. I am also very good at writing, and have a massive vocabulary as exemplified by my use of the word 'exemplified'.
My friends consider me a 'hacker' rather than a 'nerd', the difference being that a nerd is good at math science et cetera, while a hacker is in particular good at programming. Also, combat boots + skirt/shorts = hot. In terms of fashion, I tend to wear Army surplus stuff, and pants with lots of pockets, jackets with lots of pockets, and in colder weather I wear a duster with lots of pockets, and in much colder weather I wear my big green army parka with two pockets big enough for a PHB! Pockets are my main storage mechanism, and I often carry 3-6 books around in them. It follows that if I take off my parka and duster, then I can beat almost everyone I know in a 10m sprint.

    Edit:
Physically, I'm taller than most people in my grade(9) and although I no longer look vampiric or skeletal, I'm still pretty thin. I tend not to have much acne, and that which I get is gone in a day by using a strong solution of alcohol, detergent, and salt. My skin tends to be pale, because I don't like to go out when it's warm (sweat makes me feel dirty).

You could call me a Nerd, I love fantasy, Zombies and Science Fiction. I'm in History and Geography classes (can't say I'm enjoying them at this moment, exam block was just a week ago), I'm a Role Playing Game fan, Dungeons and Dragons is my favorite, I make characters, Cities and Dungeons in my spare time, I'm in a Campus Game next term.

I enjoy games that are open-ended and actually give me a choice in what I'm doing so there is some replay-value, I feel robbed if a game can be finished within a day.

I wear cargo pants with anything I need for my Day in the many pockets, a blank white shirt and a Jacket over the top for warmth and more pockets.
I'm un-athletic with a bit of a stomach, medium hair which I grow long ,then cut it to medium again after a month of being long, the Hair grows back faster that way.

I was the victim of a lot of bullies at school which continued until my 3rd year of high school, I spend my lunches talking about the nerdiest things, including my new Character and his city (he's got a "Huge Mountain city" fund going on.) which is going to be run in my friends new game.

...and I love it all, wouldn't change anything.

Bah! I can't figure out what label I fit under. Jack of all trades? Naww... There are plenty I'm not...

Anyway, I love biology And chemistry, but not math. More science-orientated.

My vision is excellent. Ever so slightly far sighted, but not enough to need correction. I'm tall, thin, and pale as hell, but I've got blonde hair and German blood, so that's what I blame for aesthetics.

Oh, and fashion sense is an illusion. It all changes and switches around so often, just ignore it, and wear what you think looks good. 'Tis what I do.

As for games with depth... Well KotOR didn't even have enough depth for me, and so that'll probably make people think I'm less nerd, and more psychopathic lunatic.

Ah! That's what I am! Crazy guy!

I honestly have no idea what I am, I guess I'm kind of a nerd but not so much. I wear glasses, I used to play D and D, I play a hell of a lot of video games, and I'm on the computer a lot. I used to excel in school, though not so much anymore, it just has no appeal anymore. Once I started learning absolutely nothing I kind of gave up, and now my grades are suffering. Only a bit, B's instead of A's. I don't play any sports, but I sort of play at lunch. I'm decently fit, but not that much. I'm about average. Plus pretty much everyone at my school plays video games, if you don't it's pretty much considered weird. Well I had a point at the beginning at this, but I forgot it now. I also read a lot, and quite fast. I finish books in about a day or two, depending on the length, and how many times I've read it before.

Well, I hate sports, but I also loathe math and science. I find D&D fascinating (Obviously) but have never gotten into playing it. I write poetry, I paint and draw. I'm quite successful socially. I do have bad eye-sight, but the contacts make up for that. I believe in looking good and making something of yourself. I play the bass from time to time.
But the main thing about me that is nerdy, would be my obsession with games. Morrowind, Oblivion, Gothic, The Witcher are all on the top of the list along with countless others adventure games. Though I don't play, and never will play, World of Warcraft

I am a huge nerd, but not stereotypical. The majority of people I know would probably never see it. I just got home from running a 6 hour DnD session on an epic long running DnD game (I only ever play with my IRL group of friends) I am double majoring in biochemistry, and molecular biology, and plan on becoming a doctor. I occasionally play video games, I read lots of web comics, and know enough about science, computers, and math to get any nerdy joke you can come up with. I work in a biochemistry lab... and talk about my work instantly kills any conversation I have with anyone outside the lab.

But I live a double life :P I have amazing (or at least really vain) fashion sense, in the sense that I dress like a pretentious indie kid. I write music and play shows (chicks dig it, pyong! - ooh, I might be playing second stage at Warped Tour this year, but that is a completely different topic). I have a vast social network of friends and acquaintances, I go to parties and mingle, I do a lot of relief work (which takes a keen ability to sweet talk foundations out of money, and network with regions of the world not set up to network) I'll hang out and talk with people I barely know a lot. Basically I'm a very social person. I don't need glasses, I'm skinny but in decent shape (have a very healthy BMI, I'm right in the middle of the curve), and I tend to favor a trendy style. I consider myself a, "high functioning nerd."

I am intentially nerdy as hell. It allows me to avoid people on the whole.

Besides, games and the internet are coo'...

Well, I guess I'm a nerd in terms of my intrests. I play DnD A LOT, both Warhammer Fantasy and 40K, paint all of my models, I read fantasy novels a lot, have a bastard sword mounted on my wall, loads of posters of Lotr and Dragons, spend more time on computer than sleeping, I'm math and programming major, but on the other hand... I don't look like a nerd. Yeah, I have long hair and wear chucks or skate shoes all of the time, but if anything that would define my music taste (although I don't think music influenced my style of clothing, it seems I fit in that rock/alternative style). Also, I'm an ex ice hockey player, go to gym regularely, I'm a diver (love all extreme stuff, actually), snowboarder/skier, I have decent social skills, but don't use them too much since most people piss me off and I can't get along with just anyone, although I do have close friends who are used to my misanthropy of sorts, and I've never had problems with girls. And most of my friends are like me, they all play or have played DnD and warhammer, so going out and stuff like that has never been a problem to me...

I feel my nerd-cred dripping away
well I am a self-proclaimed nerd, let me count the way's how
    1 I play DnD, StarWars d20, ...
2 I just joined and am playing in a Play-by-E-mail StarTrek RPG
    3 I graduated college at 18
4 I majored in math with minors in computer science and classical history
5 I read fantasy, Sci-Fi, mathematics, and mythology books, (I even read "E: The story of a number", and "A Dialogue on Two New Sciences")
6 Thin, although I am the closest to being overweight in my family (my older brother 5'7" and 120 lbs), Pale
7 Messy hair, no fashion sense, ...
8 Ridiculous glasses (I even had bi-focals for a very long time)
    9 Currently work in IT
10 Watch tons of anime when I can
11 Sports, I admit I have a passion for 2 sports, fencing and taekwon-do (just got my black-belt)
12 Have studied more ancient history than most people I know, and even did a paper on a comparison of Greek ethical ideology and Mesopotamian legal systems using sources my prof had never heard of (of course he was a bad prof considering the source was Aeschylus' Oresteia, and the prof thought that the persians burned down the parthenon).
13 Have a bad tendency to accidently obfuscate my speach with words that people don't tend to be cognizant of.

Now for the points against me,
1 I never have taken even a basic chemistry class (of course I did have a friend teach me quite a bit of basic chem)
2 I have only taken a precursory overview of biology (of course I did stay to talk to the prof about his former work in Genetically Modified Organisms)
3 I have taken one astronomy class ever (It was a second year class and we got to have finding a new asteroid assigned as a class project)

    Geek. Nerd. That's me.
I excelled in most academic areas (except for ICT, Music, Art and Drama), didn't really like the sciences or math much. I'm a humanities geek.
I don't game (tabletop or computer), but I'd like to. The internets and reading are my two biggest hobbies. Reading's still the best though.
Most often you'll find me reading fantasy or something at least one hundred years old. I've read most classics you'd care to name. Oh, and some of my favourite books are historical fiction.
As a result my vocabulary is immense and I think that intimidates less geeky people. My best friend's become addicted to reading because of me. Then again, she got me addicte to manga and anime.
I'm reticent in public and very shy; but conversely the internet's helped me to break out of my shy mould.
Fashion is nonexisitant, it's probably more like Cassies' than anything. Physically, I have glasses, am very short, I'd be pale if I didn't have this semi-permanent tan and my hair is either Medusas' or chaos theory incarnate.

Oh, and one of my biggest dreams is to meet Terry Pratchett.
Wouldn't give up my geeky nature for anything.

I wouldn't really worry about that, guys have types just as much as girls do. For example, I like girls with fair skin, slender, fairly shortish...

I used to be, and I've made great strides, thanks to years of hard work. I'm much more social now, but I hate myself, so there is always a downside, lol.

    Yeah... My list:
    - D&D player/DM.
    - Sci Fi fan.
    - Browncoat
    - A ton of random trivia about ancient history, science/maths, etc.
    - Study in multimedia.
    - Gamer
    - Work for a TV show about gaming...

And more, that I can't think of right now.

I'm not really intentionally nerdy, it just sort of happens. Fortunately I have few of the "insufficient social skills" problems that plague many of my nerdly peers. I think it's because I'm much better at verbal skills than math skills, and that lends itself to better communication.

Physically, I have a few of the standard nerd features. Extremely poor eyesight, thick glasses, need to get out in the sun more, pretty thin. All of those things could be altered, if I had the time, money, and inclination; but they're just not priorities at the moment.

    Well...

    Reasons for nerdiness:
    - I'm dividing this into reasons. Pretty nerdy.
    - I play DnD, creating intense homebrew worlds, am a Whedon Fanboy, love comics, fantasy shows and novels.
    - I'm learning various ancient languages at school, and typically excel at most subjects.
    - Aren't that great at sports, apart from swimming, high jump, and long distance running.
    - I have longer than normal hair.
    - I'm very pale.
    - I'm very thin, and tall. Lanky is me.

    Reasons for not having nerdiness:
    - Not a video game fan.
    - Have fantastic vision.
    - Am not that fond of the sciences, and despise Maths.
    - Don't have stereotypical nerdy looks, save my hair (which will shortly be changed), and complexion - which I from my heritage, rather than lack of sun exposure.
    - I'm vain, and don't have that bad fashion sense, at least able to tell what suits me, and what doesn't.
