Re: Number of Character Appearances III
Does petrification count as a "kill"? I don't think we gave Celia an endnote for being stoned by Zz'ditri.

Re: Number of Character Appearances III
Are we counting the ninjas that attacked Daigo and Kazumi? If so they have 4 previous appearances (586, 587, 589, 590) plus the current comic, 591.

The ninja are not counted and being turned to stone is not the same as death.

Re: Number of Character Appearances III
Being turned to stone is at least as existence ending as being dragged off by lawyers, I say it should count.

Re: Number of Character Appearances III
The discussion at the time concluded that there is no worse fate, or more irrevocable state, than being dragged of to see the wizard that lives by the coast by lawyers... ... at least theres a chance to break the petrification, which was true for Celia, and is still true for the pathetic devil. Also, the petrification effect explicitly says that the soul of the petrified creature does not disappear, if I remember correctly.
There aren't really any exclusive or original ideas on TVTropes. That's kind of the point.

Re: Number of Character Appearances III
Stone can be reversed, but in D&D, so can death. Hell, we even have a convention to denote when the death didn't stick. Therefore, my vote is to give V the 'kill' for the demon, and give Zz'dtri the temporary 'kill' for Celia.
But I'm used to not getting my way, so whatever."That was so terrible I think you gave me cancer!"

Re: Number of Character Appearances III
With blue "+1's" for Elan, Daigo, Kazumi, Therkla, and (because of the tiny rowboat in the last panel) Kubota. Also, if we are determining petrified characters to not be dead yet, then the giant pit fiend gets an appearance in panel #9.
Also, since we don't have an endnote for Kubota (and "K" is already in use for Therkla herself), may I suggest "Q"? As in "Killed by Qarr/Kubota"? I realize that Qarr doesn't actually have any kills so far, but it's all I could think of.
Alternately, since Therkla won't be racking up any more kills, we could convert "K" to "Killed by Kubota/Therkla", though that gives us the weird situation of it looking like Therkla killed herself.
EDIT: Took too long to write down, got ninja'd by the man himself. Nice use of the "Y", I didn't think of that. My point on the pit fiend still stands; if he's not dead, then he got an appearance.Last edited by SPoD; 2008-09-18 at 12:01 PM.

Re: Number of Character Appearances III
Someone just pointed out in another thread that the stoned Pit Fiend is visible in this one, too, in the background of the panel where Kazumi is shouting.
Edit: Well, I'm glad that someone was able to do some ninja-ing this strip, at least.Last edited by Chronos; 2008-09-18 at 12:02 PM.

Re: Number of Character Appearances III
Just to note we only have five letters left for endnotes. I'm thinking that there are some endnotes we can shift to numbers. For example, the characters killed in the battle of intermission are unlikely to be brought back to life, so we can change that to a "1". The samurai killed by Therkla are not being brought back and Therkla is unlikely to kill others now, so we can change the "K" to "2". We might also want to think about getting rid of the "J" for the removal by lawyers. That would free up three letters.

Re: Number of Character Appearances III
Have you considered using two letters? Like Daimyo Kubota?

Re: Number of Character Appearances III
That would create a problem if someone was killed by Kubota and then ressurected -- the endnote would be ambiguous with "killed by Durkon and then ressurected and then killed by Therkla and then resurrected".
I agree with changing the less important endnotes to numbers, but only as and when needed -- e.g. if Kazumi kills a named character then you might want to "release" K. The letters are much easier to remember who they belong to, so we should keep them as long as possible.

Re: Number of Character Appearances III
Well, we can move to numbers for some of them. They would have to be characters whose victims are unlikely to ever be brought back (which would often require them to also be dead).
- Removed by lawyers
- Killed in the Battle for Intermission
- Killed by Miko (though i guess there's a shot of Windstriker getting assigned to a new paladin)
- Killed by Therkla
- Killed by Daimyo Kubota
