There's some other comic that I can't remember right now that uses that effect with spellcasting or the equivilant. Help me out here?

Dude. Like...dude. That's entirely insane. I don't know if Vaarsuvius is just tired, or actually shifting on the alignment axis. No doubt s/he's a ultra-badarse, but I mean...dang. Also, here I was thinking Elan had gained a few extra Int points along the way, but apparently it was a fluke.

Oh, for.... Every one of Vaarsuvius' major decisions has been for greater exposure to ultimate cosmic power and against any distractions to that quest. The revelation that Elan doesn't get a free pass for threatening to impose another subplot is distressing but not particularly surprising unless you are personally over-invested in the hypothesis that Vaarsuvius is something other than CN or TN.

And I don't think that Elan is being outlandishly dense here. Vaarsuvius' threat was quite hollow from both a pragmatic and genre-savvy perspective, and Elan nearly deserves credit for dismissing it so quickly as to wonder what a dependably precise speaker is actually trying to say.

I thought Elan was screwing with V on purpose, taking advantage of arrogance to defuse a potentially hostile situation (which seems to be pretty trope-y to me, something Elan'd be good at).

FWIW, I don't think V is quite ready to actually kill Elan yet. But s/he is clearly careening down the slope toward Evil. When and if they ever do re-connect with Haley and Belkar, I give Belkar about ten seconds to live, tops.

He told Therkla while she was dying that he wouldn't dump Haley for her. If he had been willing to give up on Haley, Therkla would accept a resurrection. As it stands, she likely will not.

Broken the heart of a ninja superhero that he felt was a genuinely good person (insert everything up to confronting Kubota as a direct result of that decision) and allowed that same ninja superhero to die permanently because he cant give up on Haley. It may not sound like a lot to tell it, true...

It does indeed bear mentioning that yes, Intimidate really is completely unrelated to how well you would actually be able to harm whatever it is you're attempting to bully. Instead, it's a Charisma based skill check with modifiers for size.

Elan is actually the most "intimidating" member of the group, probably followed by Haley.

I think we can define that as a subconscious Bluff check with a circumstance modifer for V. *knowing* that Elan isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier, meaning that he/she is willing to believe that Elan isn't lying about being clueless. That's more than enough to overcome whatever pathetic Sense Motive check (WIS mod plus levels in a cross-class skill) that V. could make.

For what it's worth, V. clearly hasn't *completely* lost it, or Elan would be a pile of dust right now. To use the Evil Willow parallel that has been brought up in other posts, V. is at the stage that Willow was at when she not-so-subtly threatened Giles after he scolded Willow for bringing Buffy back from the dead. That's not good.

If by "fight" you mean "Vaarsuvius transforming Elan into a shapely pile of ash" then yes, you would be correct

Which, frankly, would have been short, brutal, and fatal for Elan. V is simply better at killing things than Elan has ever been.
