Amazing that a loved charerter can be hated so quickly!

If I remember correctly, when old blind pete first appeared, the fans loved him, but now I see in the discussion thread at least 2 enraged posters. Hard to believe he was hated so quickly!

Well he did betray Haley's and OUR trust in him.
There's no way he's trying to help Haley and trick the thieves guild. He sold Haley, Celia, Belkar and the priest (who all trusted him!). The priest already said he's happy to help out a friend of Pete ... he seemed to trust him the most.
How would you react if you saw one of your friends beeing betrayed by somone you hardly knew?

I don't know, I still like him. He knows what he wants and he's prepared to do anything to get it.

If you were blinded, with the knowledge that it was possible to cure it, but that you'd just be re-blinded again, (Ow!) I'd imagine you would do some fairly reprehensible things as well.

We have a fair amount of investment -- positively -- in Haley, Sylvia, Belkar et al.

Blind Pete was new and somewhat sympathetic (blind guy, knew Haley's father, hard luck story). That generated a moderate amount of sympathy/like feelings.

Then he attempted to betray Haley & Co. to their deaths.

Here's a hot tip that will serve you well into the future: If you want to get on someone's bad side in a hurry, betray their deepest secrets to their enemy. No matter how much love there was beforehand, most people will hate you forever thereafter. Whatever good feelings they had to you only make the resulting hatred much stronger.

Those few who can still love their betrayers are called saints. They are rare.

I don't hate Pete; in his place I'd probably be extremely tempted to do the same, or to submit to some form of magical research project designed to give alternate senses (like scent, blindsight, tremor-sense, etc). What I sort of wonder, though, is whether we're going to see something else come of his dealings... (spoilered for your protection)

I wouldn't be altogether surprised if, assuming that Haley and co escape and/or defend themselves successfully, poor old Pete gets screwed over anyhow. Bozzok seems to me the sort of person who'd exorcise frustration at his own failure to capitalise on the information by having Pete's eyes taken again. Of course, I could be wrong.

It never looked to me like he was particularly "loved". People liked him because he seemed unique, funny, and nice, with unique and funny being just about the two biggest fanbase-gathering attributes in comics. One strip of that, however, can't offset the reader disposition-drop from betraying the main characters.

In all seriousness, betrayal has a way of doing that to characters, no matter how minor. One of my friends was playing FF7 (extremely minor spoiler coming up) and took a ridiculous amount of time to stop wanting Yuffie to die after the whole Wutai sidequest.

Actually that is worse. The job of a fictional character is to make you care, one way or the other, or several ways. Indifference is a failure.

I just figured he's just a side character who's not going to show up again after a few more strips. Nothing to get worked up over. Like, say, Trigak.

Most people never loved Blind Old Pete. Most people don't hate Blind Old Pete. Most people likely don't approve of his actions...but it takes a bit more than that to translate to hate.

The only character in this strip who has really ever been quite disliked or hated by a relatively large number of people was Miko. And even then, I'm not sure it was a majority.
