    Otho

Otho covers his eyes as the flames burn all around him. Watching everything around him burn, he scoots down and grabs his wand, before it was lost as well. "You have to hand it to the witch, she can put on quite a show." He chuckles, as realization dawns. "And we're stuck here until the lock fades..."

As his sword howls, he does the same. Showing almost feral features for a brief second, he barks at the moon. Off in the distance, a trained ear might realize that his call was answered.

Duensal flies over the burning wall and is awed-though not really surprised-by its size. The ring of fire is more than forty feet wide, covering the entire area where the carriages once were.
A few hundred feet beyond the ring Duensal sees the small army of pikemen and archers gathered around a seemingly empty spot on the ground. They are much fewer than they had been only a few minutes ago; perhaps sixty of them remain. As Duensal watches, a dozen of them walk into the empty spot and simply vanish one by one.

Back in the clearing, Szeth strikes back at the enemy with his own face and misses by inches.

Eclipse blasts the strange being with a burst of fire and the semblance of Szeth bursts into a red-black cloud of swirling smoke made up of a hundred mouths and a thousand eyes. A tiny portion of the smoke burns away then the creature reforms in Eclipse's image.

Gerard charges at the strange creature but upon contact he realises the thing is but smoke-a smoke that forms countless mouths and eyes as his sword strikes at it. The image of Eclipse bursts for a moment then reforms as Gerard's own. Gerard is unsure wether his blow did any damage at all... and now his weapon feels heavier and slower in his hands...

Zen-Ort flies slowly over the battlefield below, managing to clear the burning wall with little difficulty. He flies close to Barien and they both watch the battle from above...

Barien conjures a powerful whirlwind he sends against the strange opponent and upon striking it, the creature seems to dissolve into a cloud of smoke. Out of the smoke come hundreds of mouths that seem to bite down on Barien's spell even as it presses against the creature and Barien's whirlwind vanishes, eaten! The image of Gerard disperses and the creature seems to assume the form of Barien.

Marassa tries to push the creature back but the Telekinesis seems to have no effect at all-it seems to fizzle like Barien's spell though not in nearly as spectacular a way. Again the creature's image disperses and it takes, for the moment, her own form.

While Otho seems to be concentrating on something, Vervasi jumps at the other side of the creature, next to Szeth and near Otho. She slashes at the thing and its form is blasted to bits. As it assumes the form of smoke and fangs and eyes, Vervasi's blow shatters a dozen of the mouths and twice as many of the eyes and a jagged gap appears in the smoke. For a moment Vervasi sees the smaller gap where Eclipse burned the thing but not a single other mark in the creature's boiling mass. They'd need a lot more blows to take this monster down to size... Then she realises her halbert seems duller and slower and curses.

The creature swirls in place and seems to flicker from the mass of red-black smoke and mouths to the images of those who have interacred with it. As the images form one by one they seem to be facing their originals. Some of the images appear for a moment but others seem to linger; Marassa, Eclipse, Barien and Gerard. The creature disperses into a cloud of smoke and mouths and eyes and screams.
devourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourde vourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevo urdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevour devourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourde vourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevo urdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevour devourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevourdevour
The... thing extends to its full size, a cloud easily larger than a fire giant. It covers fully half the remaining area between the walls of fire and washes over Marassa, Eclipse, Barien and Gerard. You immediately feel weaker, slower, less powerful as thousands of tiny mouths feed hungrily but you suffer no wounds. Despite this initial luck of physical attacks, your minds are almost overwhelmed by the cacophony of that creature's presence...

Those still outside from the creature see the darkness Szeth had conjured and the greenish light of Eclipse's dimensional lock flicker and die as the smoke washes over their points of origin. Otho, still concentrating on calling forth more allies from the darkness, hears another voice in his mind...

    Spoiler

Those whose weapons have touched the thing roll 1d6. That's how many rounds your weapons are nonmagical.

Those the creature engulfed lose all active spells and spell-like effects automatically. All their items are for the moment nonmagical and they must make a fortitude save DC 19 in their now lowered bonus or be nauseated for 1 round.
If you lost constitution (or charisma) to HP due to the creature's item drain, the damaged HP go away first.

The casters lose a spell or spell slot at random and must make a DC 15 will save (in their now lowered bonus) or suffer from feeblemind (if you're immune ignore the feeblemind). Casting requires a DC 22+spell level while within the thing.

Starting turn in the thing means taking 2d6 nonmagical bite damage automatically.

A knowledge: history is required to identify the thing.

Just a boy... *sigh* Guess I'll work with the tools I am given. Now, think about it young one. You're probably your allies' best chance at killing the guardian-though not with what you're currently doing.

    Otho

Otho slowly backs away from the beast, watching it carefully. His allies had struck it, and it had reacted rather unfavorably. He looks at the howling sword at his hand and decides its best to silence it. With a quick flourish, he leaves it planted on the ground. At the same time, his other hand draws something from his sack, a delicate harp of masterwork quality. He begins playing a soothing tune, trying to counter the gibbering madness coming from the monstrosity.

As he plays, he whispers, seemingly to no one in particular. "Perhaps, if they cant do anything, I doubt the hounds will... and from the look of it, Id best not touch it..." He tries to block out the screaming, letting only his song fill his mind. "The halfling opened it and the thing came out, perhaps I should leave it closed?... You know, I always thought Id be worried when the voices came, good to know theyre on my side."

With Szeth using supernatural fire that the creature seems unable to eat, Vervasi using powerful blows that harm the cloud to about the same extent, Marassa draining its mind and Otho eating its soul, the creature fails in less than half a minute.

Meanwhile, Barien has the great idea to create a wall of stone around the silvery ring the soldiers are using for their retreat and Zen-Ort, Gerard and Eclipse have fun playing eat-the-soldier.

Duensal stays back and watches and when all enemies are dead, heals his wounded allies with his Words of Power.

No reason to draw this out. Just assume Marassa loses 5 more spells before the guardian is defeated, Barien expends the spell required to mimick wall of stone and Duensal uses Word of Nurturing (Greater?) to give fast healing 5 to those of you that can't heal.

After the battle, Marassa replaces her Mage Armor, and begins the process of self-healing... Summoning up elementals, ordering them to hold perfectly still and not resist, then Draining them until they are un-summoned (one way or the other). After a few minutes of this (and quite a few abused elementals), her form is quite solid again.

Eclipse, still a ways away from the main part of the group, due to chasing down the troops, reaches up to his mouth to pick a small bit of bone out from his teeth.

The Hunger had finally quieted to a dull roar, after he had sated it with flesh. He worried about it, as he seemed to be getting more and more used to his strange appetite. He supposed it was only natural that he would, and yet. His pointed tongue ran over his lips, subconsciously attempting to soak up the last bit of blood.

A small shudder as he realized what he was doing. He dismissed it. There was no time for this. With that, he turned away, walking back towards his other companions, his feet crunching loudly as they walked over the bloody bones littered on the ground.

They may not have been completely successful, but they have the artifact, they have more information on those that they are opposing, and they did not lose any allies. In addition, those with more... "ahem"... unusual tastes have been satiated for the time being.

We should get out of here, there's no knowing if the enemy will decide to return with reinforcements, and I for one would rather not be tested again this day. We may not fare so well a second time without more preparations.

The beast nods at Duensal's suggestion, "Aye. My stone hide has taken a significant beating. Neverwinter always has a plan. The mage no doubt knows our faces now, even through the illusion of fiendish faces. With her power she might even be able to smite us down from afar, especially if we stay here. Let us be gone from this place."

Okay lets see what's in the box, shall we? Better make sure this isn't for nothing. He slides a sunrod out of his belt and strikes it shaprly against the floor of the coach before looking inside the box.

Marassa examines the lid closely but cannot decipher most of the inscription. The part of the writing that Marassa can recognise is in Abyssal and reads:

Unleash not what lies in here
    ere the end is nigh
    uncover not the hidden fear
    lest ye lose yer mind

Szeth closes in with his sunrod but the device's light simply refuses to illuminate the interior of the box. However, while the contents of the box are cloaked in perfect darkness, they appear quite clear in your eyes, as if they want to be seen.

A heavy tome, larger than most books you've seen used by men, stands in the middle. Its pages are black upon black, made out of the same metal that the box is and the letters are not clear enough for you to read. But touching the pages you feel the carved letters-the book must be meant to be read by touch.
There's also a two-feet long cylinder made of transparent crystal and thicker than a man's wrist that has similar letters carved on its outer surface and five four-sided pyramids made out of metal; a green one, a bluish one, a black one, a gold one and a red...

Barien's deep "voice" echoes with a decidedly acidic tone.

<I've just had an absolutely novel idea. Why don't we stop messing with our treasure and deliver it to the point where our patrons can take care of it and reward us, instead of waiting until something else goes wrong or Neverwinter returns with reinforcements?>

    Otho

Slowly, Otho's burns, caused by the Neverwinter's death throes, mend themselves. Smiling, he sheathes his sword and puts his wand and fiddle back in his sack. He felt rather vigoruos, the things vitality still flowing through his body.

While the ohters examine the box, Otho examines the remains of the soldiers that the others had delt with. He scans the body looking for any lingering signs of magic. After all, there was no use in leaving an enchanted item behind, and there had already been a great waste with the knight and mage's incineration. At the very least, he wanted to take a suit of the glassteel armor, if for nothing else but the sheer novelty of it.

If he finds any rings, potions or other magical trinkets, he'll command the wolves that answered his call to help recover any similar items from the bodies. He'll place what can be salvaged in his sack.

"Yeah, you're probably right Barien. Out of curiosity, you wouldn't have called me young one in one of your messages, would you? If you can read minds, can you also see who else was in mine?"

    Spoiler
    Show
The wolves would stick around for an hour, might as well make use of them. Otho'll use detect magic as a warlock to scan the bidies and remains of the battlefield for any possible spoils. Most of it was porbably nuked, but hey, it doesn't hurt to try.

He'll order the wolves to help out if he finds an item of value. He'll show it to them and order them to fetch any other similar items.

    Szeth

Well my plan to escape with the goods while the battle was raging to ensure mission success was moot. You'll big folk can carry to box now that the lid is not all heavy. I'll wait outside. Szeth fades into invisiblity and steps out into the big wide area of mess and burnt carriages. Wrinkling his nose he steps out into the area and scans with his enhanced vision for anything valuable or an interesting souvenir.

    Vervasi

Looking slightly sick as Eclipse starts to devour the various corpses in the area, Vervasi picks up a waterskin off of one of the corpses, and dumps the water over her head, washing away some of the blood and grit that came from the battles. Still bloodstained, Vervasi examines her no longer present wounds, looks over to Duensal and merely says "Thank you"

Looking around at the battlefield again, Vervasi coughs as says to no in particular "It occurs to me that we only partially succeeded in our contract. We were supposed to kill all of them, in addition to obtaining whatever this is."

Marassa shields her eyes against the sudden brightness of the sunrod, but doesn't mention it.

"What is done is done. With all that was seen here, the brotherhood will be unable to escape blame for the raid, at least in the eyes of the common people. We shall see what our employers think of this debacle."

Marassa glances at the ruined carriages, and the pooled iron that is all that's left of those in the blast zone.

"Let's see... at seven tons each, and six carriages, and iron is a trade good at one silver dime per pound, that's about 8,400 gold crown's worth of iron. Worth salvaging?"
Of course, by the time I finish this post, it will already be obsolete. C'est la vie.

The bodies of the knights and mages where the spellcasters of Neverwinter blasted the group with a barrage of fire are burned beyond recognition. Even the breastplates of the knights are half-melted pieces of useless metal.

Where the ring of fire burned for two and a half minutes, nothing is recognisable as part of a carriage or man-made item. The stones Marassa collapsed to create the chokepoint are slowly cooling pools of magma shining with an eerie reddish glow under the cloudy sky. Of the other carriages and what they carried not a thing remains.

When you search the bodies of the dead archers and pikemen you killed before they could escape, you come up with two dozen nonmagical pikes, about the same number of longbows and leather vests of similar quality and nearly five hundred glass-tipped arrows with the tips containing a translucent, colorless liquid.

Almost despairing at finding any magic items or treasure of any value, you cheer up when you search the only surviving carriage: the ambassador's. In metal strongboxes that resist magic and are too tough to break-even for Vervasi-you sense auras of magic. Szeth manages to unlock both of them. In one you find three rows of six potions each, the three different types of potions radiating very powerful magic. In the other you find a few objects of elven make but made out of black metal: a curved dagger with a skull-and-shield pommel, a simple black elven cloak that seems to fade out of sight when you're not looking at it, two signet rings with a skull and shield insignia and a black helm without a faceguard whose brow and sides are shaped like the fangs of a vampire.
