Well, I vote for Lord Iames Osari's Vazjura.

First of all: a lot of good contenders here, for a variety of reasons.

Bakkan's Astara, to me, really evoke a spirit of 2.5 D&D. They read as having that well-done, full block of info of the kind from the black Monstrous Manual. Stylistically excellent, so props to you, sah.

The Vazjura are also excellent, and would make for scary organized foes. Credit to Lord Iames.

However, the battle, for me, came down to the Shimmering Ooze and the Qliphoth.

The "filaments" ability is flavorful, evocative and interesting. RS14's creation is well-thought out and quite unique. However, between the two, I'm going to give my vote to the Qliphoth. It's scary, has a Far Realm Deluxe feel to it and employs a host of space-bending powers to give psionic characters pause.

    Congrats all, great work.

After reviewing all the entries, I agree with afroakuma; the Qliphoth and the Shimmering Ooze were among the best entries in this contest, forming a three-way tie with my own entry, the Vazjura.

Faced with not just two but three entries of such quality, I will bow to self-interest and vote for my own entry, the Vazjura.

Of the concepts, I liked most the Existential Terror and the Vazjura. Some idle thoughts:
    • Something feels wrong about the Existential Terror's attack mechanic. It seems wrong that to melee it, one should grapple it. It's just that much more dangerous when first entering one's square. It's also a bit sparse. Why do both positive and negative energy heal it? Why do they have no constitution score?
    • I think Vazjura Fever needs to be revised. It is a disease caused by a CR8 opponent, yet only Psions, Wilders, and Psyichic Monks have a reasonable chance of surviving it because the first available effect which can remove it from an ally is a 7th level spell. Why not give PRD a touch range, and let both it and Remove Disease remove the fever? Boost the DCs in exchange, and don't grant any benefits unless a character can manifest PRD on himself to remove it.
    • It strikes me as odd that a spacefaring race has taken to living underground.
    • Mental Redundancy is a great mechanic, and I'd love to see a caste of tougher Vazjura which manifest as Psychic Warriors and put the multiple focuses to good use.

The Astral Shard also seemed interesting, but I felt it needed quite a bit of polishing.
    • I think it needs a more "fair" tactic than striking with Soul Spears from maximum range.
    • I don't see the need to remove all the physical ability scores. Even incorporeal undead have Dexterity.
    • Blindsight 1000' is excessive -- it essentially means nothing can hide from it. Better, I think, to simply grant Darkvision 1000' and hand-wave how it sees.

Thus I'm going to vote for the Vazjura. Good work, all of you.

I no longer actively read the forums, and probably won't respond to any PMs. I'm fine with people using my homebrew in anything, including fan-compilations and wikis, as long as you credit me.

Interesting stuff there. The Star Spore Seedling is quite interesting, but unfortunatelly not a match for some others.

The Astral Shard looks... Uh... I am not sure. Maybe it should get more hit dice and go take a spot among the epic monsters, at least if it is to keep the blindsight and that soul lance attack.

Astarus and Vazjura are interesting races. The former seems to be aimed towards a player race useable on a slightly low level campaign. And it looks good enough for it. The later is creepy. Perfect strange enemies, wonky to use as PCs, but possible, somehow, it seens.

Quiploth gets bonus points for the illustration, but it looks wonky to actually use, and the Shimmering Ooze has a cool ability, but it lacks a good way to be used as more than what other oozes are relegated to, random encounters.

    ---

I will vote for the Vazjura, because they combine a cool, mostly unique ability (brain colectors have something similar), and are easy to use en masse.

Because monsters are always better when they come in numbers, in my opinion. >.>

And voting has come to a close.

The Demented One wins this month's contest with his otherworldy creation, the Qliphoth!

Bakkan's Astarus takes the VT's Choice Award.

    Congrats!
