I've been refreshing off and on all week for this, and I just happened to catch it as it was posted. Well worth the wait.

Re: OOTS #613 - The Discussion Thread
Man, Belkar's really making up for lost time here, isn't he?
Not only does he save the day, but he gets in a good quip at the expense of BOTH the thieves AND Haley!
Celia better find Haley a potion so she can keep up with all the witticisms here!

Re: OOTS #613 - The Discussion Thread
Guess this means Belkar for sure has FIVE levels in Barbarian for Improved Uncanny Dodge? He was attacked by both rogues from opposite directions, meaning he was flanked.
Damn, he must be a very high level PC by now. I'd estimate 16-17 at least.... WOW. If the Order catches up with him they'll give Xykon a run for his money when the time comes.
Alternatively, both Crystal and Bozzak missed with their sneak attacks - which seems doubtful since they didn't declare them.
If Belkar really is that high in levels Bozzak and Crystal really need to start feinting. They don't stand a chance toe to toe with such a high level melee class for long, poor build or not.
However, with Belkar's pathetic Wisdom score and a rogue's high bluff score, feints should be a guaranteed success. A few well placed bastard sword sneak attacks SHOULD bring Belkar down before he kicks their asses..
But no one in the comic has tried a feint yet.. its an extremely useful but unloved combat mechanic
Aside #1: Cool comic. The rules have seem unusually fudged lately though. Nice to see Bozzak be smart enough to at least attempt a coup de grace.
Aside #2: Celia is STRONG to be able to lift Haley like that. I thought the sylph template had very poor strength?Last edited by Charmy; 2008-12-06 at 02:27 AM.

Wow.
Hero time for the Belkster. Hope everyone gets out of this okay. Well, with the exception of the Thieves guild, of course.Remember how I was wishing for the peace of oblivion a minute ago?

Re: OOTS #613 - The Discussion Thread
Mmmm. Seasoning.
Man that comic made me hungry. I shall have to go eat some pickles and onions.
Also, just because he is evil does not mean he isn't one of the good guys. Belkar has just stolen the bucket.
Also, there is little more evil, in my mind, than rubbing people's faces in how they have failed.

Re: OOTS #613 - The Discussion Thread
I think that's what happened, since Belkar did get Sneak Attacked in the basement, by considerably lower-level characters, I think Bozzok and Crystal simply rolled low (possibly natural ones) on their attack rolls (though, at least in Bozzok's case, he may have missed by a small enough margin that the shield did make a difference. As for not declaring a sneak attack, I think it was left out because it'd probably be needless clutter. Besides, you don't always have to declare it.

Re: OOTS #613 - The Discussion Thread
Hm. Not only is Belkar learning to fake goodness, he's also learned to fight tactically, going sword and board when outnumbered by ~equal level foes rather than all-out offense.
And there's no way Belkar can be using Improved Uncanny Dodge to negate flanking against rogues of this high a level. Not when they could sneak attack Haley, a single-classed rogue. The bad guys are just missing.Spoiler

Re: OOTS #613 - The Discussion Thread
My guess is that the shield he picked up, was rather well enchanted (since its from someone ~4 levels higher), and he stacked defensive stance on top of that (he seemed to be mainly parrying after the 1st attack), so that the rogues couldn't hit him.

Re: OOTS #613 - The Discussion Thread
Geez, you guys with your rules discussions.
Let's keep in mind that Rich doesn't play strictly by D&D conventions when it comes to the story. Belkar most likely dodged their attacks because of the Rule of Cool.

The only reason I read the reaction thread is to see how the rules may or may not explain what just happened. Keep up the god work guys.
