Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
Hmm, I wouldn't recomend keeping strictly sticky limbs if you are going for a more detailled art style, especialy if you start putting necks (like I see ont he female character). It tends to look pretty weird in my experience.
And the use of gradient for hair (or beard I guess) lighting.Last edited by smuchmuch; 2013-08-12 at 08:21 PM.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
That armor is beautiful. o.o Great work. I think the avatar suffers a little from having too many colors though. I'd probably make the shoes more like a shade of color of the cloak, instead, to cut off the color extremes a little.
Also the eyes look funny, but otherwise, nicely done!Last edited by Gnomish Wanderer; 2013-08-12 at 11:22 PM.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
May I recommend playing around with the limb placement and angling and also having each of the blurred version have a somewhat different limb placement and angling as well?
There is little to suggest she's actually moving fast other than the blurring behind her; it looks like she's walking merrily rather than actually running or jogging. The hair also seems unaffected by such speeds as well as her clothing. The Iron Avatarist Crypt of Fame - Exorcising photobucket from the historic archives of the forum.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
The background avatars are displayed on is, in RGB, #F0E7D3 (or red 240, green 231, blue 211 if you're working in decimal). This is also the same colour as quote boxes.
Though the majority of avatars just use a transparent background, so it blends in no matter where it's displayed.
I should probably make some new OotS style art one of these days... Looking back, the last thing I did was in... 2009?! That can't be right...
Time to start making templates again.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
Keris is right, I believe the color is 'transparent'
I see what you're going for with teh image effect but it just ends up looking like the Flash there. Maybe try giving her front leg a little more bend, make it harder, and increase the fluid lines throughout? Also try speed lines instead of echoes, that might help illustrate her movement?Gnomish Decker by me! You can find more of my work here!!! Also, my Tumblr, if you're into that

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
I was going for a cartoon-y look, so the Flash is pretty accurate.
I tried speed lines, but it didn't really illustrate how fast she was going to me. Sh just looked like a person running at a normal speed, instead of someone move over double the normal speed for medium creatures. *Shurgs*

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
I'd suggest a more violent flow, borderline horizontal considering she's going at around 32 km/h.
Impossible I'd bet, considering speed requires time flow to be perceptible and unless you are doing an animation an image is static.
However, as depth (which is also impossible unless you pull really fancy things like stereoscopy), you can suggest it and let the brain do the rest of the work.
It almost looks like the character is just fast walking or merrily hopping; that's because of the pose.
When you run you tend to lean forward; legs and arms bend rather hard while you are running and depending on the speed any loose parts will start to pull back (hair and clothing and... anything on you pretty much).
A more graphical example:
To the right is your character; compare it to the left where there is leaning forward and more violent arms and leg bending.
Another way to suggest movement is with a number of visual effects associated with it like blurring.
Using multiple states with lowering opacity (which you used) simulates the effect of phantom image of things going really fast (like hummingbird wings). But for this you need to change each state because the character is not moving as a whole body but as sum of parts, and in running this parts do not move perfectly parallel across a line but bend.
Like:
Another option is through blurring, in your case you used gaussian, which is mainly related with focus (things out of focus will look similar to being applied Gaussian Blur); a better alternative for suggesting movement is the aptly named Motion Blur.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
I wanted a motion blur, but as far as I can find, Inkscape doesn't have one. If I wanted to do that I would have to export it, and then continue to edit it in paint.net, which really doesn't want to cooperate today. (Has crashed 3 times while I was trying to work on a different picture.)
If Inkscape does have motion blur, please tell me where to find it.
I'm a dork. I just found it. Editing now.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
The difficulty is less that it's difficult to show motion in a static image (which it is, admittedly), and more that it's difficult to show indications of extreme motion in the OotS style without looking odd. Inkscape has a lot of raster-style filters that just look downright strange next to vector art.
For example:

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase V
What book can I find that in? It sounds pretty interesting and I need to start using magic casters
I quite like her glasses and hair
The only magic users I've OOTS'd up were sometime last month before I started going here (and found out about rounding corners and ends and such), one's a drow priestess of Lolth and the other's an orc cleric of Gruumsh:
Spoiler
No sign of magic in any way shape or form, but they're spellcasters.

It's from Heros of Horror, but is available as an excerpt on WotC's website.
I was really proud of her hair too.Last edited by asdflove; 2013-08-14 at 07:06 PM.
