4th edition Rangers were the top single-target damage dealers in the game. I'd say they got plenty of love in 4e.

Going slightly off topic, you have given me a moment of understanding here in terms of how frustrated a lot of the player base was with the Ranger in 5e when it came out. Hadn't realized (having not been around for 4e, had left the TTRPG hobby in the early 00's for a variety of reasons) that it was a/the DPR king of 4e.

Rangers got a huge boost in updates. Gloom stalker basically gives permenant invisibility if you use it right along with getting an extra attack in the first round of combat. With Crossbow Expert and Sharpshooter, you can compete with high level characters at level 4 in terms of raw damage output, and break the ceiling for most builds in terms of damage not long after that.

When you compare that to Beastmaster, which needs to use their action to allow their animal companion to participate in combat, it's a pretty big difference.

What I found odd was that people tried to claim that he was not Evil because he was lovable. I don't understand that. I've never understood the need of some people to rationalize that a character they like is somehow less Evil just because they like them. Thog is Evil; Thog is lovable. Apparently, though, that's not how some people see it, and that's what continues to baffle me. I don't see how one could appreciate fiction on any serious level if every character has to boil down to a single LOVE/HATE toggle switch.

Darth Vader isn't Evil because I like him as a character! Yes! It all makes sense now! And Carly Simon did the Heinz advertisements, so naturally, by association, Heinz is a Jedi. And we know that Harry Potter is in fact Evil because Edward and Bella made half as many movies and defeated their enemy through peaceful coexistence while Potter required six movies to do, what? Become the enemy?
