Most French teachers I've met seem to work to make you hate everything French. Maybe you had one of those?

I too had bad French teacher, and I disliked it very much. Sadly, now that I'm adult. I don't remember almost any word.
However, as I am from near the border, I can speak an Italian dialect that is actually near enough French to understand it a little, in case of need.

And I loved Asterix too, I have a huge collection of movies, only that they are old VHS I can't watch anymore :(

I know exactly why in my case: too many vowels. I could never get e, é and è correct (nor could I tell them apart when spoken to me), and I thus never got any traction into the language. I could write it and read it well enough that I passed several DELFs, but the orals where painful.

(The other usual issue with French - their insane verb conjugation system - was not that bad for me, having already become reasonably fluent with the very similar Spanish one. But I think that was also my issue: once you've accustomed to the so much easier to pronounce correctly Spanish vowel system, it is really hard to leave).

You don't actually need to tell them apart when speaking though. But I understand than when writing remebering whichh one to use would be difficult. Frankly even we have trouble with that sometimes. That and the ridiculous amount of silent letters we burden ourselves with.

That's already quite impressive. Truth be told, no amount of schooling will give you a good pronunciation, you need to either consume an enormous quantity of local media or live there. Preferrably both.
Which is why my own accent, when speaking English, is some unholy mix of French, Queen's English, several american accents and Irish.

Far fewer than I once did, I can tell you that much. Practice is crucial, and these days it is so easy to just use English for everything. Heck, the other day a friend made fun of me because I'm starting to tumble over my native language.

    See strip 882.
As long as the protagonists don't know a specific detail, the antagonists speak very circumspectly about it.

I agree. Being a native portuguese speaker, the french grammar was never the issue, because both portuguese and spanish share with french many structures, but phonetics is painfully different and graphic accentuation works in a completely different approach.

So when 1146 arrived today, I was notified about via Twitter on my phone. I was playing photosynthesis at the time (quite ironic given it's about very smiteable trees). So I read the comic on my phone during downtime. In the process I completely missed the third row of panels. It still seemed to make sense. Is that too big to be a detail?
