Re: My Little Pony XXXVII: We Should Have Learned [Something] By Now!
As others have mentioned earlier, the fandom is surprisingly productive and fertile. Literally thousands of pictures, essays, MMOs, musics, what have you, have been created in keeping of the show. I myself profess that the fandom itself have driven me to write fanfics of my own.
More than that, this fandom have been incredibly accommodative of newcomers and surprisingly tolerant of those who hate on the show. I mean sure, we have those vocal super-minority who tries to convert everyone else by force or badmouths those who didn't like it for one reason or another, but really, the vast majority would be like 'It's okay you don't like it. We love you anyway.' Something which I see only infrequently in some other fandom.

Re: My Little Pony XXXVII: We Should Have Learned [Something] By Now!
Been answered by a few others, but I figure it can't hurt to give my take. Initially, it was the sort of weird incongruity that drew me to the show. I found it via the original ponythread #1 on these forums and having My Little Pony sitting in the middle of a D&D forum's media board made me curious enough to check it out. After watching it, I would say that the show is well-made and the tone of general happiness and good morals that it sets is quite refreshing, especially for the cynical setting that is law school.
Once you get into it, the community stuff is what keeps you though. It's a subtle thing. Maybe you start by listening to a piece of music or a someone links you a good PMV, or just a random link to some news on Equestria Daily. But once you start following up on stuff, there is this huge world of art, comics, music, and stories that are extremely well made and touch on a vast array of themes beyond the original show.
On top of that, the relationship between the actual show and the community has been nothing short of miraculous and I hope people take the effect that has occurred as a lesson for future businesses and how they can relate to their fans.
Quoted for absolute truth.

Sure, I'll be willing to take a number if you've got room. I think you've had a scene or two with Sandy Shores before, so I'll put him down for this. Character description was in this post if you need a refresher.

...well, I was gonna say you don't get to pick the number, but that's kinda funny.
I would be honoured. ^_^
I'll fit as many of you in as I can, but you'll need to give me descriptions and stuff. Raz and Shimmer and those I had to start with I knew well enough myself, but I'm not good enough with every OC in the thread to write them. ^_^''Recent Homebrew: The Socialite | The Crystalline: Memory Altering Construct Race | Sanguine Hand, a ToB Discipline of blood and cruelty

Re: My Little Pony XXXVII: We Should Have Learned [Something] By Now!
Oh, I dunno. We think it's kinda cute!
It looks like a ladybug >w<
Correct. Superman, for instance, has "Last Son of Krypton" as a keyword. That covers heat vision, super strength, bulletproof, everything else. He does not roll his Last Son of Krypton skill to fight a regular bank robber. He never even picks up the dice. He just wins - it's not a valid contest, there's no narrative way for him to lose that fight.
If the bank robber grabs a hostage, however, then it becomes a contest.
Do it! I volunteer all of my things!
Social interactions tend to work best when they aren't defined by numbers but instead guided thereby. If I have a character With Int/Wis/Cha of 15/10/8 I'm not going to make any dice rolls to see if I am a smarthorse jerk who doesn't realize why folks don't like me. I'm just going to play it that way, and keep the relative mental disparities in mind.
If I were the kind of guy who needs to be constrained by such rules then no amount of good rules system is going to actually fix that.
My point being that by the time you get people together who want to role play, and then convince them to role play as ponies, you should be fine.
Aha! Heroquest 2, that would explain it. So now I'm jealous that I've missed out on two awesome games.
Nope. The shipping stays.
Sorry mate. Priorities, you understand
Ah. I will probably ask about this in the future.
I'm with Thanqol on this - my OC list is up for the asking.
Stop making me want to buy rulebooks!
Good point. That's how we play Zombies! at any rate. What fun is fighting the unending swarms of undead, if its just "I got a five. Now I can move two more spaces!"
...
Of course, I was and am talking about the original, proper HeroQuest
Spoiler
Not this apparent latter-day sacreligous upstart that dares besmirch it's glorious name!
I am so jealous of you, spaceman. Soooo jealous.
It is genuine in its purpose. It intends to show peopl an example of being a good person, and it does just that. Realistic problems like athletic insecurity, over specialization of intellectual studies interfering with your life, and the dangers of overworking yourself because of pride - you know, all the same problems that show up in the edgy, teen-aged dramas? - are handled in a manner that prompts critical thinking, compassion, and the furtherance of wisdom.
And then I got involved online. The people I speak to about ponies have helped me refine my moral and ethical frameworks. Further they have helped me recognize and utilize something I've noticed but haven been able to codify for a long time; what I consider worthwhile and what you consider worthwhile can be different but they needn't be mutually exclusive. just because I think I'm right doesn't mean you have to be wrong.
I have found a television show that promotes kindness, tolerance and generosity amongst its audience. I have found an audience which accepts and utilizes lessons of tolerance, kindness and generosity. This is rare enough that of course I had to look deeper.
I like My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic because I can be discerning of it and still appreciate it. It meets higher standards than a lot of 'adult' programming. And when you look at it, the categories of 'girls show' and 'kids show' have no substance other than to make someone feel better for not watching them. They're little different than saying "dude, that's for jocks, eh would you watch that?" or even "pfft, no way bro, minorities watch that show."

Re: My Little Pony XXXVII: We Should Have Learned [Something] By Now!
Alright, I'll see what I can do then:
SpoilerAppearance: Sandy Shores is a light blue unicorn with brown eyes. His name comes from his sand-tan mane, whose small, brown flecks give it a grainy appearance. He’s a bit shorter and skinnier than most unicorns, making him fairly small by pony standards. His cutie mark is a sandcastle.
Skills: Sand sculpting/crafting
Biography: Sandy Shores recently graduated from an academy of earth magics, and is now looking for work. His dream is to find a nice, quiet town with a good beach and settle down for good. Maybe open a little sand-crafting shop if he's lucky.
(Note: For his work, he basically works to avoid and repair erosion to shorelines and dunes. Another natural thing that doesn't quite work in Equestria.)
Traits: The two words that best describe him are "sincere" and "committed". When he says he'll do something, he does it. When he gives his opinion, he means it. When he sees somepony upset, he wants to help them. Tends to be logical in his thinking.
Flaws: His natural willingness to help others means he often forgets to care for himself or his desires. He'd be more willing to give ground if it meant other ponies were happy. And while he takes others at their word, he often overthinks his own actions and responses to make sure he doesn't offend or say the wrong thing. This makes him a poor impulse thinker.
Heh, been meaning to write an updated version based on how he's evolved and grown as a character. Thanks for the excuse to do so.Last edited by TheAmishPirate; 2012-02-15 at 04:46 PM.

Re: My Little Pony XXXVII: We Should Have Learned [Something] By Now!
Dropping in to talk about tabletop RPG stuff:
Pretty much any effects-based point-build toolkit system can be used for ponies, if you're willing to roleplay in the bits that the system doesn't cover mechanically; Mutants & Masterminds and Big Eyes, Small Mouth are no exceptions -- though BESM (as much as I had a blast running and playing 2nd edition for seven years) has serious balance issues that M&M (4 years with 2nd edition and 1 with 3rd) doesn't.
If you are curious, someone put M&M3 PL5 writeups for the Mane Six up on the M&M Forum here.
And I have no idea how good it is, not being that familiar with 4e, but somepony did a 4e pony race here.Blue Star Topaz is my name

Technicallier, the majority doesn't watch the show at all. In fact for any show, movie, or cultural event the vast majority of people don't watch it or care about it at all.
But yes, most of the show's viewers are from the intended demographic once you look beyond the internet.Proof-reading is totally unnecessary in the digital age now that we have spell cheque.

Re: My Little Pony XXXVII: We Should Have Learned [Something] By Now!
You should be really jealous of my cousins. Said cousins got extraordinarily lucky - they are the ones who moved to Austraila (whom my Mum was visiting when she was ill.) Whne my uncle came over the next time, he'd bought a copy of HeroQuest on ebay for £20 or something to take back home with him, and asked me to check it (to make sure everything was there etc). Not only was it the original version (the same one I had twenty years ago that started me off wargaming and roleplaying, not the revised, later version) it was PRISTINE. Seriously. Aside from the fact a few of the figures had been undercoated, there was no real evidence it had ever been used. Everything was in little plastic bags in perfect condition. I can only assume someone bought it, or got it as a present, played with it a couple of times, had a start at painting the figures, and the filed it away for years. They really lucked out on that!

Re: My Little Pony XXXVII: We Should Have Learned [Something] By Now!
Tazel (gods, I finaly named him!) is finely-groomed pegusi male, kind of skinny, with a darkish-brown coat and brownish hair. Rather plain-looking, but friendly and well-read. Often forgets simple things, like eating or drinking, and often has to be reminded to go to certient meetings or assembles. Often timid when he is meeting someone new.
The fact that he is long dead and relies on a magical effect to appear alive makes him a mite paranoid, tho.

I've never recommended the Internet Discount for anything relating to Heroquest because the authors asked really nicely that you please don't.

You sure are! But then you hear a rustling noise from one of the darker corners of a closet you didn't check. Upon investigation, it's that one person you have a crush on but never had the nerve to ask out. Your blood runs cold and you realize;
"Sweet Celestia! It's a trap!"
But it's too late. The very doors that were supposed to seal out the madness are now trapping you inside with it, and the time locks won't disengage for 24 hours.
You've just entered...

Re: My Little Pony XXXVII: We Should Have Learned [Something] By Now!
Oh wow, those are really cool. Really plain, but still fabulous enough to enjoy.
And yeah, considering that most My Little Pony plot points involve social skills and deduction, they can fit anything. They almost require role playing.
Believe it or not, I actually have dreams about that sort of thing. helping a friend move, and finding an unused, forgotten box of gaming paraphernalia (...huh. Didn't know there was a second R in there, I've been spelling that wrong for years) and just sittin through it. Usually it's D&D books, sometimes board games or card games. I recently bought the AD&D 1e Dugeoneer Survival Guide specifically because I've seen the cover in my dreams, yet didn't know the book existed.
In general: it's not something I recommend lightly. But with game products it's often worth knowing what you're getting in for, and it's always better to have a hard copy. By the Internet standard, I didn't mean download and done, so much as try the product and then lay down for the real thig if it's to taste.
In specific: there is no way I could ignore a simple entreaty like that. So don't download the book.
Thanqol, is this the one?
Spoiler
The price was relatively prohibitive, but that's because I'm broke at the moment. If I can convince Braz to not pine to death, I'll drive home, grab/cash me check, and begin my gaming journey anew.
EDIT: in retrospect this looks more like a splat book, and I wasn't willing to invest the time to read it (as dehydration and hunger were setting in). Perhaps I shall give it some perusal before purchase.

Of course, I'm generally the same way. Morning ritual is an hour long coffe break because otherwise I'm not in tune with humanity. But I can pass that off as a drug induced problem and oh great I just talked myself into kicking caffeine again this is gonna be a fun quarter.Last edited by SiuiS; 2012-02-15 at 07:17 PM.
