Compassionate Mage - 3.5 Wiz/Sor ACF
Compassionate Mage
Whether it is simple altruism, because healing fetches a higher price, the desire for self preservation or anything inbetween, you have learned the skills that allow you to shape arcane energy into restorative power.
By barring yourself from two other Conjuration subschools (Calling, Creation, Summoning or Teleportation) you may add all Conjuration [Healing] spells to your class list. This doesn't add them to your spellbook/spells known, it simply allows you to learn them from now on.
Generally this Feature would be taken at first level, but at the DM's discretion it may take effect later, usually due to an event that had a particularly profound effect on the character. If this is the case you may partake in a one-time 24 hour ritual that changes any spells of your now barred subschools in your spellbook or spells known for spells of the Healing subschool. You may eat & drink etc. during the ritual, but you may not take any other actions, and after it is completed your mind is considered fresh and ready to prepare spells/spell slots for the day.

Re: Compassionate Mage - 3.5 Wiz/Sor ACF
I like the concept, but I'm curious, how does this work with a Conjurer Specialist? Does the Conjurer lose access two three schools? I suppose between transmutation and conjuration the wizard could a potent summoner/buffer, but with the lack of three schools, well it begins to feel more like a Specific Class and less of a Wizard mod. (I reckon a non-specialist wizard could be built, but who plays non-specialist wizards?)
Edit Ah... it seems I misread. Seems legit to me.Last edited by AugustNights; 2010-10-18 at 08:04 AM.

If you're taking this I'd assume you won't be aiming for Maser Specialist because you're losing ~1/2 of the Conjuration spells, pretty well gimping yourself with that specific PrC. It wouldn't affect any other rules though, so yes a Conjuration MS would still lose 3 other schools.
I play non-specialists, it's why I made the Master Generalist.Piratebold-Bard by Elder Tsofu | Backer #121 of the Giantitp Kickstarter | My homebrew

Subschools, not schools. You don't lose Necromancy or Evocation, you lose Conjuration (Teleportation) and Conjuration (Creation), for instance.

Re: Compassionate Mage - 3.5 Wiz/Sor ACF
Sounds pretty reasonable to me. Though, I've never really understood why wizards/sorcerers never got access to healing spells anyway (especially since other arcane casters like the Bard can).

Cheers.
Legacy mostly; in 1 & 2ed Clerics healed and Wizards blew stuff up, and the designers wanted to keep it that way.

Although I think balancing around Shadowcraft Mages is a terrible idea, I still have to say: this is fantastic for Shadowcraft Mages.

Re: Compassionate Mage - 3.5 Wiz/Sor ACF
Indeed they do
Or, more likely, I probably saw yours, forgot it, then made mine. Originally I was going to make them give up a school too, but decided this was way better since you're only gaining a subschool so should only give up subschools.
So thanks for either the compliment or the inspiration (or both)Piratebold-Bard by Elder Tsofu | Backer #121 of the Giantitp Kickstarter | My homebrew

Re: Compassionate Mage - 3.5 Wiz/Sor ACF
I'm working out a feat that would enable casters to add a Conjuration subschool (excepting the Summoning subschool) to another school of magic : i.e. it could switch the Conjuration(Creation) subschool to the Evocation school. Anybody else interested?
