Default FinnLassie's Fantabulous Facade of Random Banter #194

    Hello, wee babbies
Now that life has brought you here
    Greet your new thread

    Haikus are quite hard
Yet I still try to do them
    And it sounds stupid

    You're all fantabulous!

    How To Random Banter:
Rules of the Random Banter Thread

    Spoiler
    Show
    1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

    2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

    3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

    4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

    5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

    6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

    7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

    8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

    9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

    10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

    11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

    12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

    13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

    14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

    15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

    Let the banter commence.

It's preferable to create the new thread when we have a person capable of creating one still around rather than sitting on page fifty faced with such uncertainty.

Totally disregards it roots so you have to progressively move to folk and bluegrass and then increasingly fringe elements of those so that you can avoid the tide of pop in those over-genre. So, sure, give me any country before about 1970, any folk or bluegrass before 2000 or so.:
You're certainly free to like and dislike what you want, that's fine, but I'm not entirely sure I buy the reasoning here. In two cases you seem to be operating on the layman's perception of the genre rather than the actual definition. Emo, for instance. I get the implication that you think it's merely defined as "sad rock music" which just isn't true. "Emo" is rather strictly a punk subgenre with its own fairly defined set of sounds, compositions, performing styles and, yes, lyrics. It, as well as its subtype "screamo", has been misappropriated in recent years because, well, the names can easily be misinterpreted. To combat that this, however, people have been using alternate names to avoid confusion (midwest emo for emo and skramz for screamo) so I guess I really can't blame you for the confusion. Still, the more you know, right? You can hear the midwest emo sound in groups like Snowing, Sunny Day Real Estate, The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, Texas is the Reason and American Football. I bring this up because comparing emo to country strikes me as a bit silly.

I'm not going to try to claim a lot of country isn't trash, because that's true. It's also true of practically all other genres, but I digress. I do resent the implication that the bulk of country is watered down pop. If anything contemporary country (that's "since the late 60s") owes more to the then burgeoning rock and contemporary folk scenes. Its roots may be in Americana and bluegrass, sure, but it can't be compared to those anymore. It's simply on another level. I won't deny a lot of these contemporary country artists use pop compositions because that's pretty blatantly true, but c'mon dude, the end of rock most people are familiar with use those exact same compositions. So it's hardly a localized thing. It's not even that bad a thing. I don't buy this premise that featuring pop hooks and melodies immediately cheapens your music and it's a premise that, unless I'm reading you wrong, you seem to believe in, yourself (unless you clicked the smallyuk emote by mistake.) Good country rock isn't some elusive myth, it's freaking everywhere. Lucinda Williams, Merle Haggard, Gram Parsons, Flying Burrito Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Townes Van Zandt, Dwight Yoakam, John Prine, Iris DeMent, Wilco, Guy Clark, Dolly Parton. And those are just some of the obvious ones. Get back to me.

EDIT: I like music. Not sure if you guys picked up on that yet

Indeed. Granted, most of the people around here would have a problem with that, I'd think, on account of them needing to eat something, and the options being the deer they hunt and their livestock.

The thing is, what most people hear of country (and indeed, this goes for most genres) is the watered-down trashy stuff. You're a big fan of hip-hop and (to a certain degree) pop, and so the bad country songs that have influence from those genres (and there are a lot of those) don't bother you as much as they would someone else. There is good country music around, but it's not always easy to sift through the crap to get to it, especially to someone who's largely unfamiliar with the genre post-1960. Of the artists you listed, for example, I've only heard of five of them, and I'm only really familiar with the music of three of them. (and it disappoints me greatly that "Good Country Rock" in your mind doesn't include Lynyrd Skynyrd. (although they probably lean much closer to rock than to country)).

I feel like we could have an interesting discussion on music... maybe 5:30am isn't the best time, though.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is rather blatantly southern rock. The instrumentation can line up with country from time to time but it's closer to blues rock than anything. With that being said, Coidzor, Bruce Springsteen isn't country either. No, not even Nebraska.

    EDIT:

All this talk of music and nobody is Boogie-ing!

    *Boogies*

In continuance of last thread, I'm mostly into anything that sounds good to me. That can be in guilty pleasures, or commonly liked material. I try not to limit myself to genre's because I'm always plesantly surprised by something. Commonly though, I tend to dislike staple country (i lost my tractor, girlfriend or car) and crude rap (do I really need to make an example??).

No one could really blame you for disliking music that actively offends you. That's perfectly understandable. So this next comment isn't about you, so much, as it's more of a general statement.

I resent the notion that music that doesn't pass some vague idealogical purity test is "bad". But again, you said "I don't like" so I can hardly pin that one on you. No hard feelings, I promise.

I think the issue is that, due to American Idol, a LOT of modern songs are slow, pop love songs. And there is only so many ways you can say "I wanna love you" with an auto tuned voice before It starts getting 1: annoying, and 2: boring.

Well, a lot of rap is crude and/or meaningless drivel, your average country song has about as much melodic complexity as a bar of soap, and pop - while occasionally enjoyable - is the junk food of music. My distaste for metal and hard rock is more difficult to explain, but still there.

Well yes, I am infact a ninja.

I'm not hating on Idol, I'm hating on the people who constantly gush over the slow ass love songs. Give me some Under Pressure, some We Will Rock You, give me anything that has a melody faster then the dreck Justin Beibar keeps crapping out. I want songs that get my blood pumping.

Also, I should note that it's often the people who are on Idol that lose that go on to MAKE songs that are kind of like how I like them (like Chris Dawhtry or whoever you spell his country ass name).

Modern pop songs you mean. With the rise of indie labels and the focus on sites likes bandcamp and soundcloud pop is becoming an increasingly smaller and less relevant aspect of the experience. Even then I'm not sure I can hear this inlfux of pop ballads you do. I don't follow Top 40, usually, but the most recent one I can recall is Justin Timberlake's "Suit and Tie" which was hardly ballad-y.

Sure I can't dispute the simplicity of country but, really, it's taking after its rock and Americana predecessors in that regard. Rock, at least mainstream rock, has hardly broken down walls as far as compositional strength goes.

Well the issue there is that it's by Justin Timberlake. And modern Justin Timberlake is, atleast if I recall, is kind of stupid as hell and I don't like it.

I'm talking about the screamed vocals style. If I was talking about emo sub genre I'd go Scremo, since that's a typo that gets the point across

By classical you mean chamber or academic music or strictly referring to the classical period?

Also; there is such a thing as modern jazz and neoclassical as well as modern classical composition.
