Werewolf Classic XIX: Return to Transylvania

Deep in the Carpathian Mountains, in the heart of Transylvania, lays a small mountain village. This village has stood since anyone can ever remember. This town, however, has several unique traits. Firstly, it is one of the few places where the plant known as Wolvesbane flourishes, albeit in small quantities. Ironically, or maybe because of this, it is also a place that attracts werewolves in copious amounts.

Throughout history, the village has gone through many inhabitants and many names, but in the words of William Shakespere: "What's in a name? that which we call a rose; By any other name would smell as sweet;" and, going back to its roots, currently is called Lupinsville.

The history of this small village with werewolves has led to an interesting census. Occasionally, when the dreaded lycanthropes thrive, the village population dwindles with the advent of a single careless killing, causing the whole population to go into a terror-filled mob, lynching those they suspect of being werewolves. Sometimes they wipe out the werewolf population, and sometimes...well...sometimes the werewolves eat better that year.

It's been a long time since the last time werewolves were made known, and although it seemed that everyone had forgotten, one man had not. DM77, the town mayor and often-times resurrected leader, sits patiently on his porch. His deity had communed with him and what his role was, especially after that nasty lycanthropy infection he got way back when: his job was to come back and be the warning for the town. He knew that he would be the first target. He was, after all, the leader, and that made him a target. Oh, well. Things in the 7 Heavens were great this time of year, and he could use another break.

Unfortunately, he didn't realize how much prophesying his thoughts that evening were. As he sat down in his front-porch rocker watching the sun go down over the mountains, he sees something out of the corner of his eye. Turning, he sees nothing. Thinking it to be a bird or squirrel, he watches as the sun goes down. More movement, just out of the corner of his eyes.

Bats...yes, it must be bats... until DM77 realized that it was the dead of winter, and bats don't fly out and about when the passes are snowed in...

As the night moves onward, the stars appearing, DM77 notices that the clouds are very intermittent. When the clouds cover the moon for a brief moment, DM77 looks up to see 5 pairs of glowing eyes in the dark. As the clouds depart, he sees the eyes are attached to the bodies of 5 hulking werewolves!

"Well, it surely took you all long enough. I was wondering when you'd be around...don't keep the gods waiting, let's get to it."

As the beasts begin tearing him apart, the wolves pause only momentarily, as DM77 laughs looking off towards a rooftop. The brutes see nothing, but DM77 knows what he saw:

The cloven-footed and horned master of the wolves, watching in satisfaction at the evil and cruel deed.

The next morning, you all awake in town, another wonderful day in Lupinsville. This time, however, the festive winter morning is shattered at the sight in the town center, around the infamous Hanging Tree: the head of your town Mayor, DM77, has been put on a spike, and a note written on parchment has been rolled up and placed in DM77's mouth. It reads:

Dear Citizens of Lupinsville:

Due to problems with food this winter, your local lycanthropes are in serious need of food. Normally, we'd be happy just eating the sheep and llamas, but we decided you all would taste better. Sorry about that, nothing personal. Some of you are quite nice. In any case, know that we intend on getting through the winter by eating one of you at a time during the night. If you could avoid spicy foods, that'd be great, as one of us has problems with heartburn, but if not, we'll just get them some antacids.
