Heh. Is it me, or are Garrod and crew relatively poor at dodging, as compared to the other Reals? That was my thought pattern when asked who should get the Barrier, anyway.

Anyway, pretty spiffy mission. It is kinda awesome to get Amufro (love the nickname), and Shinn's SEED mode.

And MAP attacks are clearly the bomb. I'm a little surprised that you hadn't used them very extensively before now. Why not?

I cannot ask you if I don't see you on AIM, Nerdo. Still, it was a fun game to play.

Neither Garrod nor his unit suck at dodging, actually. It's just that he has Invincible, so I usually don't bother with Focus, his SP are not infinite after all. And sometimes, that is my undoing. Garrod's dump stat is Skill, as typical for kids and super robot pilots (or both, hello Kappei!). The exception to this rule is Gainer, since video games make you awesome - but he is 16, which in mecha shows seems to be the cutoff point between little boys and grown men.

    Wait, wasn't Garrod 16 too?

Most other missions were either too dynamic, with me moving up to the enemy and not the other way around, or with lots of allied squads getting in the way. The opportunity to use MAP attacks simply wasn't there. I miss post-movement or friend-or-foe identifiying MAP attacks, but neither type is present in SRW Z.

When you're trying to use MAP Attacks, the key is to either know where the enemy is going to show up ahead of time (Like the Endless Waltz and Battle of JOSH-A missions in W), or position your guys to funnel attacking enemies into the area.

Also, I notice you don't seem to use Focus much. Or maybe they just changed the SFX for it.

I know. That's what I did with Kira two missions ago. That was an accident, honest.

As for Focus, I usually cast spirit skills offscreen. But it's true, I use it sporadically. Bosses usually require Strike/Alert to be really sure, and it seems like a waste on mooks. We're not even 1/3rd into the game yet, so everyone has precious little SP.

Oh, also, updated the character and organisation list. Tell me if I miss something in the latter.

Whatever age he is, Garrod will always remain a bro to Renton. Because Renton needs people who care for him and are not complete jerks, unlike what he gets in canon.

    Chapter 19: Ressurected Wings

    Jump straight to the intro!
    Spoiler
    Show

Durandal: I am glad we could convince you to side with us, Athrun.

Athrun: This is the best course of action I can take now, Chairman.
Meer: Ohh, what a spiffy new custom uniform! It's not a normal ZAFT pilot one.
Durandal: Indeed. Athrun Zala, you are a member of FAITH now. The highest ranking of ZAFT officers, you respond to no one but the council and your own conscience.
Athrun: Right. What do you expect me to do now?
Durandal: Do what you want - I give you permission to act on your own. But I ask you to go to Earth and help Minerva and your friends. We will stay in contact, but allow me to present a good luck gift.
    Athrun: A Gundam?
Durandal: Yes, Savior Gundam. It was created thanks to data we received from Impulse, and customized to serve as a perfect unit for you. You like pink mobile suits, don't you Athrun?
Athrun: I see it as red, actually...

Enough of PLANTs - let's see what's going on back on Earth.

    Cagalli: ...
Yuna: My dear, you look wonderful! Are you prepared for the wedding ceremony?
    Cagalli: This is ridiculous.
Yuna: Too late for any criticism now! You should have voiced it before putting on the dress. No time now, let's go! This will be a grand event indeed!
Cagalli: Buffoonery... whatever. If that's the only way Orb can be united, you'll just have to tough it up Cagalli.

Murrue: What a nice weather we have today...

Waltfeld: Indeed! Waves of trapar are strong and plentiful. Here, have some coffee I made.
Murrue: Hmm, yesterday's was better. There is beauty in simplicity, this one has too much clashing elements.
Waltfeld: Maybe it was a mistake to add red pepper and cherries... well, nevermind about that. Let's start what we all gathered here for.
Murrue: True. Is everyone from Archangel's crew here?

Neumann: Everyone is accounted for, ma'am.

Chandra: It wasn't easy to gather in secrecy, but here we are.
Murrue: Wait... there are still some people whose faces are absent.
Neumann: What do you mean, Captain?

Murdoch: Sorry, I'm late. Had to make sure the Archangel's operational.
Chandra: That makes it everyone but two people, right? I think I know who is missing.

Lacus: So, this is the day we leave Orb?
Kira: Yes. Don't worry, the orphans will stay under Reverend Melchio's care.
Lacus: I know, and I'm not worried. Let's enjoy these final moments... oh? What was that noise?
    Kira: Lacus, get down!

Assassin: I barely missed. Proceeding with elimination of targets.
Kira: These movements... they are Coordinators! Run, Lacus, I'll hold them off! Umm... somehow...

Waltfeld: Lacus! What happened? It's not like you and Kira to stay holed up at my place for so long... and now you're here? Quick, tell me!
Lacus: Don't worry, mr Waltfeld. It's only an assassination attempt. I got out safely, but Kira is still inside.
Waltfeld: And you want me not to worry about THAT?!
Lacus: You and me both know him very well. Something like this is not enough to kill him.

Waltfeld: They brought KLFs? This is bad... why is my support not here yet?
Lacus: It will be alright. Here comes Kira.
Assassin: It's the Freedom! Shoot it down!
Kira: I do not think so. Do not worry, I can handle this. I am a SEED after all.

The Skill Point objective here is destroying all initial enemies in 3 turns. And it's nigh impossible NOT to succeed, unless Kira stands in place or runs away or does anything else other than what he should do - throw himself blindly at the enemies and make mincemeat out of them.

Yes, we control Kira now. No, I won't deliberately have him shot down. It's impossible: with SEED mode on he's untouchable. But what does SEED do, anyway? I kinda forgot to explain in the last update. +10% damage and +20% hit/dodge/crit. Now you know - and yes, this is a kickass bonus.

Kira: I will not kill you, I will just shoot the limbs off your unit!

Freedom is not a terribly strong unit (not weak either, though), but Kira is not known as Jesus Yamato for nothing.

Assassin: Lacus Clyne's life is forfeit. I just have to kill this guy!
Kira: I will protect everyone with my trademark attack - lots of beams!
    Assassin: Mission... failed...

Assassin: Only two of us left? Impossible... let's attack both at once!
Kira: I can see you! Experience Freedom's power.
Assassin: Aborting the mission, my unit cannot move!

Kira: That's it, Lacus and everyone should be safe now.

Waltfeld: Good job Kira. Let's move out - we got a wedding to crash before we leave Orb behind.
Kira: Roger. I'm not too far from that place so I will be going now.

Yuna: What are these noises? Loud and annoying, how dare someone interrupt my wedding?!
Todaka: Sir, a mobile suit battle was waged just moments ago. The sole survivor is heading here.
    Yuna: What, here?!
Cagalli: You're not telling me... no way.
Yuna: Aah, it's here! Save me!
Cagalli: Stop hiding behind me, you pathetic fop!

Kira: Cagalli, it's safe now. Hop on to Freedom's hand!
Cagalli: Freedom! So it really is Kira... you idiot.
    Kira: Huh? Cagalli?
Cagalli: You ruin everything! I know how it looks like to people outside the political area, and I don't really like this myself - but this was my own choice, got it? I cannot unite Orb in a different way, and if it doesn't get united then it won't stay neutral.
Kira: But, Orb isn't neutral! It's already cooperating with the Federation!
Cagalli: WHAT?! How come nobody told me that before? Were you hiding information from me, Yuna?
Yuna: Well... that doesn't matter now! Tell that mobile suit pilot not to kill me please!
Cagalli: You used me... worm! Take this! And I'm outta here!
    Yuna: OOF! My family... legacy...
Todaka: I am sorry I could not protect you from your bride, sir. I was busy threatening the mobile suit with my handgun.
Yuna: Smartassery aside... I have a backup emergency plan... ow the pain.

Kira: Cagalli, let's go out of here!
    Todaka: It's the Archangel!
Kira: Captain Murrue, is Lacus on board?
Lacus: Kira? I am safe, do not worry about me.
Kira: Please hold on to Cagalli for me, okay? I will escort you until we leave Orb.
    Neumann: Hostiles incoming!
Chandra: No, that's not it. They were hiding in the local area.
Murrue: Then we will have to break through them! Full speed ahead!
Waltfeld: We'll protect you with our lives! Come on Kira, just like old times!

Yuna: Haha. I expected incidents, so I had some reinforcements wait on standby. How do you feel now, insurgents? I will shoot you down and pluck my beloved Cagalli from Archangel's burning wreckage!
Todaka: As long as we maintain an advantage in numbers, we should be able to do this.

Holland: Alright. Gekkostate's here, this better not be a red herring...
Waltfeld: You finally arrived! Just in time too... Holland, I want to hire you for a job. Take down the Federation and Orb units, and protect Archangel and allies. That's it - simple enough, isn't it?
Holland: Heh, sounds like easy money to me. Move it, everyone!
    Renton: More combat, again?!
    Eureka: Let's go, Renton.

Garrod: Renton, you're here? We heard explosions and came to investigate!
Renton: Garrod! Somehow, we have a job in Orb again...
    Holland: Stop blabbermouthing!
Renton: But they're out comrades, I'm sure they want to help!
Garrod: I can't leave a friend like you in need! Garrod Ran is in!
Witz: As long as I get paid later, I'm okay with this.
Roybea: Heh, there's no helping it, is there?
Setsuko: Umm, that battleship... it looks familiar, isn't that Federation's old Archangel?
Murrue: New arrivals? Do you know them, Kira?
    Kira: We met once... well...
Waltfeld: You do not want to tell? Unusual, I wonder what happened. Hey, new guys! I know you're not friends of Orb, help us leave and we'll help you later.
Witz: That's what I'm talking about!
Toby: I can't say no here. Unless... what do you think, Setsuko?
Setsuko: We should help them, too.
Toby: Okay then! No shooting down Freedom this time, right?

Waltfeld: Glad everyone's so singleminded. Get ready - I'll show you why they call me the Desert Tiger.
UF pilot: This mobile suit is golden? Argh! No, not yet!
Setsuko: Star 3, continuuing on the attack.
UF pilot: Damn, don't gang up on meee!

Toby: Setsuko, listen for a sec.
    Setsuko: Toby? What happened?
Toby: Play it safe, okay? I know you can fight... but be careful. We just reunited, I don't want to lose you again.
    Setsuko: Toby...

So yeah, we have Waltfeld in a custom Murasame and Murrue in Archangel now. They won't stay around for long, so enjoy. The former is... well, rather decent but not much more. The latter acts like a slightly upgraded Minerva, changing its ability to switch Impulse's packs for something else...

Federation pilot: I'll kill you! What, no damage?!
Murrue: Laminated Armor is holding up. There won't be any problems.

This acts sorta like a reversed Phase Shift Armor. Rather than reducing non-beam damage, it eliminates all beam damage under a certain damage threshold.

Matthew: What, not down yet? Woah woah, don't scare me like that!
Hilda: Damn, who do these soldiers think they are?!

With Gekkostate on one flank, Freeden's crew and Glory Stars on the other, and Archangel in the center, the enemies don't stand a chance, right?

    Right.

    Hilda: Just go down, now!
Federation pilot: Is that a monster?!
Hilda: I won't get hit no matter what you do!
Waltfeld: This Murasame handles very well. Too bad I'm using it against its own makers.
Murrue: The Archangel will not fall behind. Fire, Goddfried!
Toby: Woah! Glad you guys are doing okay, but I just tanked a nasty hit here!

And this is where things started to go badly.

    Matthew: Wo, hohoho!
Stoner: Help, help, we're being oppressed!
Federation pilot: Focus your fire on the pink LFO!
Holland: Listen, bastard! You realize you're not escaping alive after what you just did to my Terminus, RIGHT?!

Roybea: Looks like our guys are in a pinch. Let's go rescue them, shall we? How about this?
Witz: A'right! ... Wait, how did that one miss?
Waltfeld: Move and support! Don't forget about the basics, that's how you win a war.

Holland: I'll show you how us Gekkostate get things done!
Federation pilot: Almost done in... take this!
    Holland: Damnit... not again.

We really should've seen this one coming. But that attack had only like 20% accuracy!

Matthew: We'll avenge Leader! Hold on to your camera, Stoner!
Stoner: I'll take footage of everything they do!
Holland: I'm not dead yet, idiots.
Kira: That Murasame... its pilot is different, better than the rest.
Baba: Because it's me. You will not leave Orb alive, Freedom!
Garrod: New Orb units, huh? Maybe you're better than Astrays, but determination matters more than upgrades!
Baba: Not yet! Or is it?

Will we meet Baba again? I honestly can't remember. Maybe he died here, nobody knows for sure yet. Also, don't remind Garrod that his Divider is an upgrade too. Logic bombs and pilotting do not mix well.

Toby: Barley Scythe, activated. Remember this?
Setsuko: Let's work in tandem! Close range mode, on! And now... switch to long range. I see the target!

The rest was, as they say, history.

Murrue: Is the coast clear? Everyone, move out!
Waltfeld: Thanks for the assistance, Gekkostate and others. You will receive your pay as we agreed.
    Kira: So long, Orb...
Talho: Holland, it's time for us to get out of here too!
Holland: Right.. this better be worth everything that happened.
Garrod: Glad we could help! See ya!

Friendly units shot down: 6, which includes Terminus 909 twice now. But wait, this is not all!

A hefty clear bonus for finishing the route split! Is this payment from Andy Waltfeld? Who knows.

Cagalli: Dammit! I'm so pissed off right now!
    Murrue: ...
    Lacus: Miss Cagalli...
Kira: Cagalli. Aren't you glad that you're safe now?
Cagalli: I was safe the whole time! It's about that Yuna bastard... he and his daddy dearest had an under the table deal with the Federation, huh? I'm not some princess in a tower who can be kept in the dark like that!
Kira: Well, but they did this anyway.
Cagalli: I know! That's what makes me angry! Urgh... you must be thinking I was forced into this ridiculous wedding thing, right? No, it wasn't that. Even if Yuna is a total fool, I would've agreed to the marriage if he wasn't allying with the Feds. You see, some things are more important than just one person. Sometimes you gotta sacrifice a part of yourself. But you know that already, right? Sorry... I'm done ranting for now.
Kira: No, I understand. And I do not think that way at all, Cagalli. I know your intentions were noble.
Cagalli: Heh, you never change do you? Brother.
Kira: I'm happy to see you again, sister.

Dramatic reveal (that everyone familiar with SEED knew about already)!

Athrun: I see I missed the whole show. Well, nevermind that - I intend to help the crew of Minerva from now on no matter what.
Talia: Glad to have you, Athrun.
Arthur: This emblem... are you in FAITH now?
Bright: FAITH? Is that a ZAFT organisation?
Athrun: Yes. The most elite of ZAFT's soldiers, who can act independently of others' orders. Durandal restored my position since I rejoined.

Vino: Mr Toby, look! The Savior Gundam... it's so high-tech! Apparently Athrun Zala used it to come here and join the Minerva crew.
Toby: Athrun? I wonder did we ever see him before...
    Setsuko: Umm, Toby...
Toby: Okay, okay - that was a joke. I know it was actually that Alex guy.
    Setsuko: No, that's not it.

Setsuko: Thank you for what you said earlier. I... hope that we take care of each other from now on.
Toby: Hehe, don't mention it! Wait, woah, are you serious? This is kinda embarassing...
    Setsuko: I know, but...
Lunamaria: Hey, this looks like some kind of confession!
Shinn: I'm not really interested. Stupid, grumble mumble, not jealous at all... huh?

Athrun: I can finally introduce myself, having shed my disguise. Athrun Zala.
Shinn: So you really are Athrun.
Athrun: Yeah. You have every right to be angry at me, for pretending to be someone else earlier.
Shinn: Maybe... but I'm just happy that you're with ZAFT now. You know... you were my idol of sorts, kinda. Justice and Freedom Gundam, before the whole mess happened, I loved them both. Even if the former was pink.
    Athrun: It's red, really!

Some time later, the routes reconnect... I mean, we reunite with the people who went to Gallia. Actually, we just went to Gallia to meet them.

Heizaemon: Here they are. Good, glad to see you made it safely.
Bright: What is that? Were we followed?
    Elche: No, it's the Gekkostate!
Holland: We just happened to be moving into this area. Don't think of us as friends... maybe temporary ones.

Lunamaria: So, tell us about your adventures! What happened when we were gone?
Sara: Oh dear, don't get me started... there was a giant race. Between pro- and anti-Exodus people. I was the lead for the pro-Exodus faction.
    Garrod: And who won?
    Sara: Fatman.
Garrod: What, which team was he on?
Jiron: None, he was just Fatman. He ran all by himself and outran everyone! This is the power of Accel.
Chiru: We met Roger Smith! That was cool!
Setsuko: Roger? He was in Gallia?
Chiru: Yeah, but he had to go away so he's still offscreen for now.
    Kei: There's also this guy.

Toby: You're big! What is this, powered armor?

Tai: Negative! I am Tai, Mu battle unit.
Toby: So, a killer robot, then?
Momu: Tai is not a killer! I found him and changes his programming so he won't attack humans!
Tai: Yes, but the capability is still there. Unlike you, I am a combat-ready unit.
Kei: Well, well, let's not create arguments for now! I heard you two are in a relationship now? Lucky you, Toby... Setsuko is one cute girl!
Setsuko: S... stop this! I mean, please.
Momu: Master Kei, please pay attention to me! Let OUR relationship progress, too!
    Kei: Yeah, definitely not happening...

Bello: Hey Sara, don't you have one more person to introduce?
Sara: Do I really have to? Sigh...

Sara: This is the character we picked up.
Adette: Character? It's "miss Adette" for you. Remember, I am your class's teacher now, Sara!
Garrod: Whaa! But she was your enemy? What happened?
Adette: Eh, times change. I'm working for the Exodus now. It sorta happened, at least I have a warm bed now.
    Sara: Yes, in Gainer's room.
Adette: So? I'm not trying to put moves on him or anything... a teacher has to watch over her students! Speaking of which, where is he now?
Bello: He said something about a raid night... what could that mean?

Loran: Everyone are having fun together. It doesn't seem anyone saw through your disguise, Queen Dianna.
Dianna/"Kihel": It may seem so. And this is good - the less people know about the switch, even our friends, the better. Miss Kihel's safety is at a stake here.
Loran: Miss Kihel... please do not be afraid! We will come to your help!
Kappei: Hey, what are you whispering about? It was my turn to tell the story to others - how we met mr Haran!
Uchuuta: Well, you were throwing a fit so Haran Banjou had to calm you down, Kappei.
Kappei: That's totally not what happened!

Intermission! And guess what - units and pilots from the other route are back. That's not the end of good news, because I get another clear bonus. And finally...

Astonaige: Engineers meet up again! Let's explore the bazaar and see what we find today.
Cotset: Working on a crazy upgrade again, Astonaige? I was implementing a thing or two in Iron Gear when nobody was watching, eheehee...
Leeg: I heard about your side project, and I think I can help you. The local traders have what you need.
Kid: You mean this condenser? Hurry up before someone buys it.
Astonaige: Amazing! Quick - Yoland, Vino! Help me carry it back to Argama!

    Roberto: What is this craziness?
Apolly: That's the biggest beam gun I have ever seen.
Astonaige: Indeed! The Mega Bazooka Launcher is completed! Captain Quattro, this weapon was optimized to work with Hyaku Shiki.
Quattro: Hm. Very well. Thank you, Astonaige.

Mega Bazooka Launcher, get! It is a wonderful weapon, strong and long-ranged.

And it eats up power like there's no tomorrow. Hyaku Shiki will require serious energy upgrades to be able to fire more than one shot.

    Still totally worth it, though.

Since all my units are back now (except Big O and Aquarion, but worry not, we won't be missing them for long), it's time to arrange them in groups. 15 minutes of intensive work later, here are the results:

Note a lot of plot squads. Including a red Silhouette Machine which I have never seen before. This is Adette's unit, as she is a pilot now. And yes, I had just enough people to fill up the next chapter's 12 non-plot squads limit.

Lastly, upgrades! I earned a lot of money recently... but it was still not enough to improve all my units, or heck even only the squad leader units, as much as I wanted to.

    This game is harsh.

Next chapter: Think happy thoughts! But not that kind of happy.

    ===========

Quite a short update, isn't it? Well, the next one will be bigger. MUCH bigger. Will update the character list shortly.

The really important parts of this update is how ridiculous Cagalli looks in that dress and that Murrue is still sexy. You know keeping perspective is important.

Also nice to have the Mega Bazooka Launcher, it makes the Hyakku Shiki so much more useful once the routes split.

Next time though, you will have one of the most annoying beginnings of a mission in the history of the series. Aren't you happy, Cubey?

No, I didn't have Holland shot down on purpose. I could've prevented that by healing him, but Hilda needed these SPs for focus.

It's karma. Karma for being such a jerk.

And yes Terra, correct perspective is very important. And the next mission's start is actually pretty awesome. Expect fun. Using the Dwarf Fortress definition.

From what I know of Dwarf Fortress... it's mined, highly flammable and you can mate with it?

Two out of three you mentioned. And if we went by canon of the series the next mission is based on, it would eventually be all three. But SRW Z cuts some stuff out.

Freedom is not a terribly strong unit (not weak either, though), but Kira is not known as Jesus Yamato for nothing.
Strange thing about this: Apparently Mu and Kira had a sparring match, with Mu in the Strike and Kira in the Freedom. Mu won.

So basically Mu is supposed to be a better pilot than Kira, but he always gets terrible units (he can't pilot the newest ones since their controls are too complex for non-Coordinators to understand).

Also, the assassins had Fed units? That's odd. In the series they were ZAFT models, which lead Kira to suspect that Durandal was trying to kill Lacus (having Meer ready really doesn't help his case).

I look forward to seeing the Mega Bazooka Launcher! Does it launch bazookas? And Waltfield remains awesome.

Nice to see Setsuko and Toby's relationship progressing. I'm sure no more bad things will happen to the happy couple ever. EVER.

Finally, as enjoyable as it is to see Holland get blasted out of the sky, I actually enjoy prefer his mech intact, Cubey. He may be an utter, utter git, but my heavens are his moves fun to watch. I prefer the generic Gekkostate music to the Nirvash's, as well, which probably contributes to that enjoyment.

    Yes, Holland's moves are awesome. There's a reason he's a ref legend.
    But he's still a jerk.

Storywriter is actually a "Renton does something awesome" song in the series. It's not Gekkostate's as a whole. Holland probably beat him up and stole the theme, though. Which is why Renton doesn't have it in the game.

Mega Bazooka Launcher is actually a really big mega particle cannon. Because for Japanese, every big gun is a bazooka apparently. I made sure to show it off next mission, so stay tuned.

The game with the "Coordinators!" explanation instead. Maybe they decided it was more reasonable than to assume that ZAFT units must be exclusively used by ZAFT people?

I won't comment on Mu. He is a polarizing figure - some of my friends think he's great, others can't stand him. And since I didn't see SEED, I don't have an opinion of my own.

Yeah, the series had "Coordinators!" too, but their suits were apparently "the newest ZAFT models" or something. Because new models of mobile suit never get stolen...

    I always figured that:

A: They were Federation assassins with stolen ZAFT mobile suits. They were switched to Dagger L's and Mon-Soonos so Banpresto didn't have to make a unit that was only going to be used maybe twice in the whole game.

B: They were Durandal's men, trying to get Lacus out of the way so the very thing that happened later in the series wouldn't have. This even makes sense in light of changing them to Daggers here: Durandal tried to perform a False Flag Operation, so if it failed and word got out, he could blame the Federation for it.

Well, the first point can't be correct, because the game already has ZAFT units coded in. We faced them in two Setsuko missions.

There were Windams too, by the way. Just nitpicking, I know.

As for the second point: well, who knows the truth here. Federation pretending to be ZAFT pretending to be Federation pretending to be ZAFT pretending to be... etc. It could be anyone. A lot of people want Lacus dead.

    Can you blame them?

I've even heard theories that Lacus sent the assassins after herself, in order to convince Kira to come out of retirement.

    She's very powerful politically. (SPOILERS)

    Oh, by the way:

The next chapter is a really big one. The mission is almost 3 hours long! So expect it to come a mite slower than usual.

There is also a possibility that I will relocate this Let's Play away from the forum. You'll know when (or rather, if) it happens.

No, I meant just the Mobile Suits that the commandos used in the anime. IIRC, they only appear in that one scene.

I assume that's because there has never been a cool aquatic mobile suit in Gundam*, so Banpresto people were too embarassed to use this.

    * Except Acguy. Acguy is love. So is Mermaid Gundam, but that's a Mobile Fighter.

Acguy isn't cool. Acguy is utterly adorable. And as we all know, cute and cool aren't the same thing.
