Another dumb question. In the episode "It's About Time", Pinkie Pie predicts that Twilight will receive a totally awesome birthday present the next year. Have we found out what that birthday present is?

My guess is that the present is the access to the thousands of old library books in Celestia and Luna's old castle in the Everfree Forest. I would totally consider that an awesome present. But I don't know when Twilight's birthday is.

Her prediction is that Twilight would get a an awesome present for her next birhday.

    This is Pinkie Talking.

Pinkie probaly "predicted" this, because as the awesome party planner who is one of Twilight's best friends, she was planning to give Twilight an awesome present for her next birthday.

Per "Sweet and Elite", it's after the Grand Galloping Gala transitions from "recent" to "coming up", but far enough in advance that Rarity would feasibly be able to have dresses ready for interested ponies. Also, probably not in winter.

Because you lose the transport after the invasion, I stuff my version with troop modules and then use the transport to move entire planet populations to recently captured worlds where cheaper transports await boarding. But 49 parsecs/wk pretty much means *poof* you are there, so it don't take long to get troops to the front lines.

Also on your analysis, I think it would be best if Twi stayed in Pony world and Sunset got upgraded to this world's Twi. Otherwise it's like two of the same Mane6 chemistry and that'll get boring.

There was certainly a long stint back in 2007 where karma was using me to get back at some really bad drivers on the road.
The most amusing one was the dude in the big pick up truck that tried to use a 'Right turn Only' lane to pass me and he t-boned a cop car.

Trouble with that was, I didn't have any planets capable of rolling out shorter-range transports, as I was capturing them faster than I could put the transports out... And it took a few tens of weeks (assuming I didn't just give the whole thing over to economy, as I did towards the end, which kept me up and down around break-even) to get the planets up.

(I forgot to mention - I managed a staggering -1200bc average per week according to the final statistics. I have no idea how I managed that...)

The trouble with GalCiv, though, is the combat is so flat. And lifeless. You spend time building those starships (and hey, guys, good job on making upgrading a massive pain is when it takes all the non-decorative modules off) and... It is about as meaningful as it was in Spore. All it gives you are numbers. I know there's supposed to be some depth with the weapon trees and the defences... But I always find sticking a ship full of guns and nothing else seems to work best. And even then, what depth there is is limited to "what research you choose." Compared to SotS 1 (which I played before and after that last stretch as I was playing GalCiv2 at my mate's house while I house-sat him Friday evening Saturday)... There's no comparison. SotS's nonmilitary side is shallower, yes, but everything else makes up for it.

And I find far, FAR too much time is spent fracking around with stations - which blow up way too easily for the time invested. (This is a fault of SotS 2 as well, and sadly bases there are absolutely critical, so you spend a lot of time fragging about with them... They have five levels - which you need a constructor to build/upgrade - but at least they have their own module build queues. But losing one that's been built up can cost you tens of turns or more, possibley into a hundred or so. SotS 1 does it much better - you built the station, that was it. If you lost it, you went "oh bugger" and just lost the turns and money to rebuild it, and not all the real-time clicking all the upgrades.)

Like I say, if you combined GalCiv with SotS (best parts of 1 and 2), a bit of MoO3 and Space Empires V (and polished the ground combat to a level like, I dunno, Empire at War or something), you'd have the perfect game. As it is... I think SotS 1 and 2 (as the sequel is different, not better, to the first one) are still the best of the rest.

Also... they ALL need WAAAAY better music. The background music for all of them is pretty damned awful, especially when you realise that you'll be listening to it for tens or hundreds of hours.

Wait, SotS 2 is not terrible now?

SotS 1 is my favorite space-based 4X, so I was always disappointed the sequel looked to be such an utter disaster. I know they've been trying to fix it, but it's been out of my focus for a while.

Oh, right right. I forget how slow building a factory world can take when you're capturing them in a war.
Especially when you get OCD like me who needs all the tiles to form pretty and artistic patterns.

110% Agree. I love the game to death for it's AI and planetary building/maintenance system, but it needs an actual combat system. I would of loved one like from MOO2. Turn-based, ships have initiative scores, facing mattered with positions of both shields and weapons, etc. One of the neatest parts was the ability to Escape combat. It was a risk since you need a round to warm up the hyperdrive, but if your fleet was taking a pounding, it was better to try and flee than lose everything.

And sometimes the enemy doesn't follow so you can at least regroup.
Or other times it will follow so you can lead them into an ambush. ;)

Heh, yeah. All 4X music seems to be some varient of this slow 'humming' tune that makes you fall asleep. I recall MOO2's battle music wasn't too bad, but that was the only one I remember not being slower than Molasses in January.

Well, this is Pinkie we're talking about, it is probably something relatively mundane or confectionery/comedy-related and not some epic artifact or secret knowledge. Also, since the first three seasons were all in the span of a single year, we might not have reached her next birthday yet.

Would it be awefully clicheed if I said she's like Professor Dumbledore in this?

On a related note, I'm a bit affraid about how season 5 and 6 will be able to handle Discord's role. His chaos illusion magic seems to be so powerful, that if he really chose to use his powers for good and became a friend of the ponies, he could solve too many problems instantly. That would make for a boring show. But at the same time, I would like to see him more often in the show.
No, but I would disagree with the comparison anyways. As far as we know, Twilight was trained for a long time by Celestia personally before given any sort of these problems. We don't know how, if at all, that training differed from Sunset's.

Anyways, after Nightmare Moon Celestia's quest giving was more of just that. It was 'hey we've got this problem, go fix it Twilight.' She didn't interfere with Twilight fixing her own problems, but she also wasn't really available (As far as Twilight knew) to solve those problems.

I'm not worried. Twilight might not be as powerful, but she is incredibly powerful. So much of the same argument applies to her, and she rarely instantly solved the problem to a plot, mostly because this is a Slice of Life show and the problem usually isn't solved by application of massive power anyways.

That is NOT a small deficit.
I dn't even remember ever getting that much deficit... Must have been during the war, when I was only half paying attention and the funds fluctuated but stayed relatively stable. I don't even know.

SotS 2 is not terrible now. It i not spectacular, but it now at least approaches the level of the first game (and in my opinion, the two are about equal now.)

It still has some problems (the new race is playable, but a bit buggy), and there are no scenarios (they didn't even re-enable the cinematics) - I don't think they've released a patch or anything for a while. You will have to use the in-game chat to ask stupid questions, since the manual and documentation is to the usual poor standards, but it is quite playable. It's not better than SotS 1... it's better in some areas, but not others. (I don't, for example, like the way they do fleets and orders now. But on the other hand, you actually get a display of the damage to your vessel's armour, so you don't have to guess so much about what ship is being battered.)

I got it on sale for about a fiver, and I've had some tens of hours of play out of it, so it's earned it's keep. If they actually did another expansion, I'd pay normal prices for it.

Ack, that does totally suck! :/
(One I hate is when you take a world and it's full of enemy spires. Inheriting a problem)

Okay. I've been dreadfully out of the loop for quite some time now. Could somebody explain the EqG: Rainbow Rocks thing? All I know it that it exists.

Are you familiar with the first Equestria Girls movie? Since this is a sequel, it won't make much sense unless you are.

Ah yes. I thought of that but for some reason I decided it was some other pony's birthday.

No no no. Think of Pinkie Pride. Pinkie knows perfectly well that a birthday present counts as amazing if its recipient thinks of it as amazing. If the present is a cake, then it's a cake that Twilight will find amazing for some reason, not just some cake Pinkie really likes (yum). But you're right in that the birthday might be in the future.

    Yes, that's probably true.

That doesn't quite convince me, because Discord has magic that seems more powerful than Twilight. Come on, he could raise lots of houses in Ponyville to the air, make the whole Sweet Apple Acres flooded, then instantly convert it to get covered by ice, then dry it.

What I might hope is that while it seems very powerful, it's also very limited in such a way that he turns out to not be able to solve most of the practical problems. In particular, most of his magic seems to be illusions and mind magic. Maybe he can't really fix dams or clear up floods that he didn't cause. Or something.
