MLP: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

> Okay, fine. I'll give it a try. Where do I start?

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

All in good fun! If it's not your cup of tea, skim it, but this show has triggered a great creative outpouring from the Internet. Pony themed fan-art is abundant and often excellent. See below for some examples.

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

I found it cringy, but was vaguely amusing on other counts. I can't stand humour based around laughing at someone failing at things, and quite frankly the idea that the dude's cutie mark is "being an utter klutz and making people laugh at him" is a rather terrifying thought.

The CMC being on top form saved it, however, from being unwatchable. I probably won't choose to actively watch it again, but I wouldn't skip over it if I was watching through the whole season at a later date, unlike a couple of earlier episodes (Owls well, Mare Do Well).

Both Trixies have been know to do so when not on stage.

Pony Trixie even did it while boasting about how humble she was, right after begging Twilight for forgiveness.

Doing said boasting and third person talking in a town where everypony knows she's a fraud, when she hasn't been a performer for an undetermined but presumably length amount of time, is all the evidence one needs o conclude that she is in fact arrogant enough to refer to herself in the third person as The Great and Powerful Trixie.

As for Human!Trixie... "The Great and Powerful Trixie!.... needs some peanut butter crackers."

I rest my case.

Yeah, that was the weakest part of the episode. He didn't even seem to think it was a grand calling either, which feels to be in contrast to what cutie marks mean.

I don't think Trixie was under the Siren's spell at all. She was just caught up in the competition, had a genuine desire to be seen as the best, and figured it was fine to cheat cause the Rainbooms were using magic (and cheating).

Why do I think this?

Trixie's personality didn't change. Like, at all. If you count those short animations advertising the movie as part of it, then you see Trixie being just as competitive and melodramatic in her 'riff off' against Rainbow Dash as she is in the movie.

Plus it didn't change after the Sirens were defeated, she was still as melodramatic as ever, and confrontational as well.

Makes for a funny thought really. Actually I think I've got in mind of Trixie facing off against the various villains of MLP after they've succeeded. Think really silly comedy, where Trixie fends off the various mental influences through sheer force of ego.

I like the idea and I'd totally read a fanfic with that concept included. :3
It's kind of how I write Trixie. That force of personality gives her a bonus versus mental influence.

Perhaps it's a matter of comfort zone? Aside from the dream ones (SiP, FWtSBT, and B&G), we get a handful of lines in Twilight's Kingdom plus part of a song, and Luna Eclipsed. Since dreams are part of Luna's domain, it's understandable (to me) that she would act differently while in them, especially when trying to help a terrified - or otherwise indisposed - child. In Luna Eclipsed she's basically got a thousand years of culture lag and being alone holding her back.

Also I just realized that, the way the S5 teasers were worded, "Princess Luna deals with a nightmare" is more likely referring to Bloom & Gloom, rather than an episode focusing on Luna...

Out of universe, explanation is simple - different writers, 3 of which had no idea how to write her. In universe? Really hard to say, you'd need to do so much hand-waving in order to weld them together that the story linking them with organic character growth would need to be really contrived. Let's see:

S1 Luna: Speaks normally, is small, light blue, no special powers. If end of episode is any indication, quite sociable.

S2 Luna: Speaks in screams and ye olde butherede Englishe, bigger, dark blue, socially inept for some reason. Again no special powers except having special snowflake Bat/Lizard/Pony guards that disappear without a trace after that episode. Note screams and YOBE made no sense even in S2, unless Celestia was playing colossal cruel prank, they made doubleplus no sense given sleepwalking power that should have clued her in real fast something is very wrong with her speech.

Early S3 Luna: Speaks normally, bit bigger and darker still. Presents some common sense to Celestia's contrived and almost fatal schemes, would be nice as natural development of S1 Luna but doesn't really fit played for laughs S2 version.

Mid S3 and S4 Luna: Given sleepwalking power never hinted before. Which would be all good, but she is shown as willing to invade a dream without any regard for privacy and torment SB with nightmares. She is also supposedly protector from dream monsters, which only raises question who exactly did that during her imprisonment, why Celestia has no similar duty, and how exactly she knows in which of millions of concurrent dreams to appear. Oh, and why she resented ponies sleeping in night so much she became Nightmare Moon if she has best special powers then. In short - raises so many questions, none of which make any sense whatsoever.

If I were trying to bring them together without fanon, I'd simply blame early S2 cringe-worthiness on overdoing forced laughs, tone it down to bearable level and make her just shy, not tormented by Pinkie. And, either make sleepwalking just a dream, or special one off spell she did to repay Mane 6 families for their help. Would get rid of most problems while keeping canon mostly intact.

This is basically why I gave up on expecting anything from hyped episodes. Sadly, writers try to cram too much fan pandering in some of them and what would be epic plot on its own is wasted on being irrelevant digression crammed as plot B. See "Night Eternal" and reign of terror warranting thousand year long imprisonment that turned out to be small argument with nothing of consequence said during all of 30 seconds it lasted. Seriously, I bet AJ and RD have bigger clashes than that...

You've previously gone on record as counting variants as different titles, so neither counts as a vote for either title.

Even with you voting for They told me not to ponythread, your vote only brings it to 41/2 for Pancake to 4 the told me not to ponythread, meaning "I am become Pancake" won the pole.

Of if you're counting Deadly's suggestion, it becomes 6 Pancake to 5 Ponythread, what with the 1/2 vote for pancake being becuase Madcrafter was split between the standard Pancake title and Deadly's suggestion.

Meaning that Pancake still wins the pole.

BECAUSE it played right into her own foilibles and personality (and ego) so neatly.

So it was either a case of her resistance is laughably low because she gets a huge penalty on her Will save (as she considered it to be a "very reasonable suggestion") to phrase it in D&D terms; or we're back to a Bleakbane-and-the-One-Ring syndrome, where the corrupting influence is going "steady on mate/mare, you're going a bit overboard!"

Right, I forgot about that scene with the clopping.

I'm fully in favor of the Bleakbane-and-the-One-Ring syndrome.

But it does raise an interesting question. Can you be said to be under mindcontrol if you are behaving exactly as you would be anyways?

I don't know about that, he seemed happy enough with it when he was being a rodeo clown. Once he realized how to use his klutziness for entertainment rather then moaning about it.

It's the most fun to write Trixie in her Great and Powerful Glory.

While that's true, you can play with it in many different ways. I like to think that Trixie has gone a little crazy, and it takes a lot to jolt her out of the Great and Powerful persona. Thanqol, I'm sure, has some mask metaphor about the matter.

Dude, just drop it. This isn't a formal voting process, and Trixie isn't obligated to be consistent in her votes. The vote was certainly close enough that a mistake for one or the other isn't a big deal.

S2 E25 A Canterlot Wedding contanis my favourite sentence from my favourite princess: "Rest, my sister. As always, I will guard the night." (It's better in context in the episode than quoted here.) That might count as a hint to his powers. But it definitely explains why Princess Celestia has no similar duty. The ponies are playing during the day and sleeping during the night, Celestia guards the day and Luna guards the night, so Celestia doesn't have dream duty.

Wait, I know Luna got an upgrade from S1 to S2, but I thought she stayed pretty much the same after that? Same coat/mane/eye color and style and body size - just a bit shorter than Celestia. The folks at MLPWiki list her colors as being the same in each season, too (barring S1 ofc).

Unless you're including the EQG Luna, who - for all intents and purposes - basically doesn't exist for me.

@Sleepwalking power: Perhaps she wanted to wait to re-introduce herself to her people before trying to protect them in their sleep? Or maybe she needed to wait to regain the strength to do it.

@Ye olde stuff: IIRC in S1 premiere p2, she only speaks to Celestia, and even then it's a tearful "I'm sorry! I missed you". In S2, she says The Royal Canterlot Voice is "how they spoke to subjects" before her banishment. Being alone for a thousand years also probably would make anyone socially awkward.

I dunno. I don't see any problem with the progression, though Luna-in-Dreams seems more business-y than Luna-not-in-Dreams, which to me makes those appearances a little less entertaining. WTB a Luna/Celestia Have a Day Off episode!

I found it cringy, but was vaguely amusing on other counts. I can't stand humour based around laughing at someone failing at things, and quite frankly the idea that the dude's cutie mark is "being an utter klutz and making people laugh at him" is a rather terrifying thought.

The CMC being on top form saved it, however, from being unwatchable. I probably won't choose to actively watch it again, but I wouldn't skip over it if I was watching through the whole season at a later date, unlike a couple of earlier episodes (Owls well, Mare Do Well).

I agree, and I think the CMC misunderstood Troubleshoes. He wasn't an outlaw, or bad by any means, but his cutie mark and his "talent" wasn't entertainment. if everyone else knew what they knew, they would think the same way.

The CMC as a group is more entertaining than separate (how many times have I said that?), but I at least get to watch it one more time for a full review. So far the whole season has been mediocre. The castle episode was the only one I can say that I truly liked so far.
