I find that any conflicts with "word of god" are generally dealt with by invoking death of the author. I have problems with death of the author as sometimes applied too, but in general I do hold to the view that if the author has to clarify anything over and above what's in the work, then they have in some way failed in their original composition. Either that or the fan theory they're refuting has gone off the deep end and isn't worth responding to.

Of course, that doesn't apply to works that aren't yet finished, but in those cases there is still opportunity for the queries to be answered within the body of the work itself, and so "word of god" is unnecessary.

But then I also find "headcanon" to be oxymoronic, and often no more than an insufferably geeky way of saying "my ideas about this thing".

And indeed I also find "canon" as generally invoked in discussions of works of fiction to be an irritating and unhelpful concept in itself.

But having got that out of the way...

Bart becomes a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Lisa never marries Milhouse. (This thus retains the projected futures from The Itchy and Scratchy Movie and Lisa's Wedding while discarding all the other "future episodes"). Fat Tony is still the original version, and the town never got moved.

The End Times never happened. The Warhammer world remains intact.

House Martell adopted "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken" as its house motto as a consequence of the Targaryen attempts to conquer it, not before they started.

Alice Morgan faked her own death and is alive and well.

Toby Ziegler wasn't the leak; he just took the rap for it.

Mad Prince Ludwig died of the wounds given him by Blackadder; the post-credits scene was him hallucinating on his deathbed.

Something very sinister is happening behind the happy facade on planet Ba'ku. The demographics don't work, there are far too many children for the population to be stable with the numbers shown, given that the adults are essentially immortal. The same godlike alien that maintains the magical rejuvenation radiation (fountain-of-youth planets don't just happen naturally) must come by periodically to cull the excess population. The people of Ba'ku know this, and are hiding it from the Federation because they don't want to lose their immortality.

Ash Ketchum accidentally cursed himself with a monkey paw wish.

In the first episode, there is the scene with Ash and Pikachu lying half dead after the storm, and Ash sees Ho-oh flying overhead. In a few places, it is mentioned that simply seeing Ho-oh can grant eternal happiness, and at that moment, Ash was wishing that his Pokémon journey wouldn't end. Ho-oh heard this plea and granted it. Thus, nothing will ever happen that causes Ash's quest to end. He will never die or age or win. He wished that his journey would last forever, and that is exactly what will happen.

Near the end of the sixth season of The West Wing, there's a plot where some astronauts are having a problem in space and none of the space shuttles the public knows about are available to launch, so somebody on staff leaks the existence of a military space shuttle, which then forces the President to use the military shuttle to save the astronauts.

In the last season, Toby Ziegler takes the fall for the leak, is fired, is gonna go to jail, and is ultimately pardoned by the President in the last episode.

Aedilred's interpretation, as it happens, is the same as that of the actor who played Toby.

He was a mole for the Independents during the war. He joined the Alliance, rose up the ranks to some high command position then organized the greatest military disaster for the Alliance during the entire war.

He was then discharged quietly. Despite it being shown that for much smaller failures the Alliance tends to execute people. And makes it confusing why they would give the greatest failure who was explicitly taken out of the system instantaneous medical assistance when he needed it.

Book as an Operative was a more interesting story, showing how a good man could have been actual Alliance rather than just having him shoved into a heroic Independent role.

Anakin Skywalker really did kill Amidala. During the time they spent together and fell in love, he had unknowingly formed a deep connection to her through the Force. At Mustafar he fought Kenobi and lost, suffering injuries that really should have killed him. To stay alive, he unconsciously reached out through that connection and drained Amidala's life energy. The droid who declared that she "died of a broken heart" simply had no idea what was killing her, it hadn't been programmed to detect or diagnose death from this cause.

This is part of the reason why the prohibition against Jedi marrying is in place. Forming a deep connection between someone who is strong in the Force and someone who isn't is dangerous, the Force-user can unintentionally drain the non-force-user when injured. But the prohibition has been in place so long that nobody remembers this, they just listen to the order not to do it, and so it never happens.

    Universal Disney Theory:

Every Disney and Pixar movie exists on the same continuity and is centered around the concept of enlightened animals. The focal point for all this is The Jungle Book. Every movie that chronologically happened before that point contains zero intelligent animals (with the notable exceptions of Sword in the Stone and Aladdin. However, in both of them, the animal in question was a wizard familiar and was likely granted their intelligence through magic.)

The Jungle Book is the turning point of everything. Mowgli, being raised by the animals, understands them on an instinctual level and communicates via grunts and growls. They do not actually speak, and the English dialog of the movie is for our benefit (just like how "technically" the Lord of the Rings is a "translation.") During the movie, there is an important seen where King Louie tries to convince Mowgli to show him how to make fire. This is a not-so-subtle reference to the Greek myth of Prometheus where the humans were ignorant and stupid until Prometheus brought them fire. And, of course, at the end of the movie, Mowgli does just that. He inadvertently shows the animals fire as he scares off Shere Khan.

This serves as the singular moment that leads to the enlightenment of the animals. However, the animals don't immediately jump up to join society. They know enough about humanity to suspect that they would probably be persecuted and hide their enlightenment. Over the next centuries, they carefully reveal themselves to select individuals they trust, but more than that, they start building their own societies on the outskirts.

Of the various animals, ducks evolve the quickest and develop fully opposable hands whereas the others must wear special gloves to give themselves greater manual dexterity. This biological advantage allows the ducks to progress the fastest, leading to them creating entire cities like Duckburg and St. Canard. They also let their arrogance get the better of them and treat the other animals as beneath them.

Eventually, around the 80s or so, the enlightened animals are revealed to humanity, and everything goes about as well as they expected. Humans can't fully comprehend the enlightened animals and give them the racist epithet of "toons" and force them to live in segregated ghettos like Toon Town. During this time, they are also abused for entertainment. Mikey Mouse and the gang are actually actors living in the 90s who star in various movies and shorts, many of which are period pieces.

At some point, for mysterious reasons that are probably magic, certain inanimate objects are also granted intelligence. They also hide themselves.

In the near future, the enlightened animals grow sick of their second class status and begin staging a civil rights movement. The humans respond with hostility to which the ducks match. War breaks out between the humans and the animals, with massive casualties on both sides. The ducks treat the other animals like cannon fodder, eventually leading to a secondary revolt. It becomes a three way conflict, but the animals are hopelessly outmatched.

The mammals flee to the wastes (probably Antarctica) and establish a civilization utilizing climate control technology. Meanwhile, the ducks and humans reach mutually assured destruction, causing the humans to flee into space while the ducks are completely wiped out. This results in three simultaneous futures.

Zootopia emerges from the mammal refuge which maintains forced isolation through government propaganda. There are some clues to this within the movie. First, the movie is proposed as an alternate reality where humans never evolved, yet the animals have advanced civilization and technology after only "thousands of years." It took us nearly 200,000 years to reach this point, so how did they surpass us in one hundredth the time? Second, despite this advanced technology they display, there are no flying machines. Sure, the one kid at the beginning wants to be an astronaut, but that's no confirmation that astronauts actually exist. The government could easily be suppressing all flying technology to prevent people from leaving their isolated society. Third, the name Zootopia, itself, makes no sense in a world without humans. The zoo- prefix was specifically created to refer to all non-human animals, so how would such a thing be created in a world without humans? There aren't a lot of holes, and they aren't that big, but it's enough to raise questions.

The next future is Wall-E where the humans have left earth. Yes, the "official" story is that there was simply too much trash, but to all appearances, Earth looks like a nuclear wasteland. Regular trash won't cause that, but nuclear Armageddon would. As for why that one city we see is, indeed, piled high with trash, I'll be honest and say that I haven't worked that part out yet. But nuclear war and a wasteful society are mutually exclusive.

The third future, which takes place before Wall-E, is the Cars world. Due to the massive radiation everywhere, no living things can survive (except in Zootopia due to its physical isolation and climate control technology). However, intelligent objects have no problems in this world and, due to the sudden power vacuum, emerge as their own society.

Every perceived inconsistency is a result of magic.

Robin Hood is explicitly a retelling of the human story and did not actually happen. Cinderella and Little Mermaid likely happened in the mid 19th century whereas Jungle Book probably happened in the early 19th century.

My headcanon is that there are future ninja who who routinely MST the events and rant about how this or that isn't actually possible by ninja physics in true nerd fashion as well.

My own headcanon for Star Wars is that the Jedi and the Sith are just two sects of Force-Wielders of many, neither are actually more good than the other, and that the galaxy is actually far more diverse in its Force based conflicts, its just that Palpatine like many totalitarian dictators used propaganda to label any belief not his own under a convenient umbrella term so that people would hate all Force-Users except him.

    My headcanon for DBZ:
    1. is that Dr. Gero is laughing down in Hell at Goku proving to be the greatest threat to all universes and feeling very vindicated.
    2. that there is alternate timeline where Cell succeeded and he basically took over the galaxy with all his sons being blue clones of him. and that they all grow up, and revolve their entire society around duels in gladiatorial combat, and your place in society is determined by your rank in the arena duels. So far, Cell The Original is still Rank One, but some of his better sons are beginning to scheme to try and prove that they are even more perfect than him so that they can take over.
    3. the entire Kai government is made to contain threats so that Zeno won't know about them. This is so that he won't respond to threats by blowing up the universe that the threat is within, and one of the chief unofficial duties of a Supreme Kai is to keep all problems a secret from Zeno so that he doesn't respond to them for the universes own protection.

    My Pokemon Headcanons.....hoo boy:
    1. Jennies and Joys are the species that humans evolved from in Pokeworld due to interbreeding. The Jennies and Joys were originally designed by Arceus to heal pokemon and mediate conflict between pokemon, which are the roles they still serve and humans came about from a combination of these two instincts giving them more flexibility and variance. How they remain numerous in modern times is that both secretly have evolution stones, and thus secretly use them on willing humans who have been trained in their ways to revert to the original forms. They won't kill if you find out about this secret but its nonetheless closely guarded and you try to talk, well....do you really want to lose your access to free pokemon healing and have police officers as enemies? No. No you don't.

    2. I like Celestia's Ash Theory, but I have my own:
Ash Ketchum is not meant to be a Pokemon Trainer. Rather, he is far more suited to be a Pokemon RANGER:
    1. He uses a single companion pokemon but eventually leaves all others at the lab or lets go off into the wild, much like a Ranger who uses a Stylus to temporarily get the help of a pokemon then lets them go
    2. Never won a tournament, but has saved the world every time he tried
    3. Constantly puts his life in danger himself rather than just having his pokemon do it for him, being braver and tougher than any trainer needs to be.
    4. Cares a lot about pokemon and protecting the environment
    5. Has fought Team Rocket hundreds of times and has far more experience thwarting crime than competitive battles
    6. He lacks the right skills to become champion to really refine his pokemon, but has the skills to remain calm in a crisis, use his pokemon to win outside an official battle.

Ash Ketchum is thus THE BEST POKEMON RANGER IN THE WORLD. Not the best TRAINER, the best POKEMON RANGER. Its just that no one realizes it, not even himself. and the hilarious thing? If he realized it, it would change almost nothing about his journey. He would still need to travel the world to protect it, he would still need to compete to keep himself strong for the real battles against evil, and he could still technically become a pokemon MASTER- there is no rule saying that a Ranger is somehow barred from becoming that. So if he realized it and became a Ranger....all that would really change is that he would get paid for what he already does and probably get called away on missions more often to do the thing he is actually good at.
I'm also on discord as "raziere".

On the subject of Pokemon: the world as we see it in the main games and the show is in a relatively brief cultural transition period. Previously, you had the society seen in Pokemon: Conquest, a feudal culture in which Pokemon trainers were the privileged warrior caste. The practice of sending children away from home aged ten to travel the land capturing Pokemon and honing their skills dates from this period, as a method of preparing the heirs of trainer families for military careers. Eventually, Pokemon warfare became so destructive that the Pokemon League was established to regulate it, mediating disputes between clans and states through gladiatorial duels. Those at the top of the League became the most powerful figures in the world because of the old cultural values that regarded skill in battle as a great virtue. Thus, the groundwork was laid for society to progress to the era of the main setting: technology has advanced, but culture is still lagging behind, and while the formal trainer caste has been abolished, many of its traditions still persist, with the League still holding disproportionate political power despite being horribly unsuited to the needs of modern government. Eventually, I predict it fading from prominence as civil bodies take over, with Pokemon battling losing popularity and cultural relevance until it's little different from real-world combat sports--something people watch on TV for fun, and might practice as a hobby, but no longer the main institution on which society is founded.

Also, each Pokemon is actually a genus, comprising many distinct species. Because a planet with fewer than a thousand animal species doesn't make any sense.

The Star Wars movies are not an exact depiction of the events therein. They are relayed to us by an unreliable narrator, and that narrator is R2-D2.

R2 may be a droid, but he was programed with creativity in order to find unexpected solutions to mechanical problems. This also makes him a subjective voice. Nevertheless, he is one of the only beings who witnessed firsthand the rise and fall of the Empire. Since we can see in the Force Awakens that records were lost during that time, it's reasonable to assume that at some point R2 was called in to tell the story, and the version we saw was that story.

It explains so many problems. First, it explains why R2 is prominently featured in all six movies. Other important things certainly happened, but R2 wasn't there for that. This is also why R2 is such a badass all the time. He fudges the story and inflates his importance. After all, anyone who could possibly argue with him is dead.

This also serves to explain the shoddy writing vis-a-vis the romance. R2 may have creativity, but he's still a robot incapable of understanding love, so his telling of the two main romances in the series are stale and almost clinical. This also helps explain the inexplicable Padme death. In reality, Padme died of regular complications (after all, there's plenty of evidence that the Star Wars universe has some rather awful medical science). However, after the fact, someone spoke metaphorically that she died of a broken heart, and R2 took that literally, being a robot and all.

It also helps explain C3PO's near-slapstick bumbling. The two are often at each other's throats like argumentative brothers, and this story is R2's passive-aggressive revenge.

Lastly, it explains the midichlorians. The Force is a mystical thing beyond scientific explanation, and as a droid, R2 cannot comprehend it. Perhaps at some point, someone tried to explain it to him as being like extra software that allows further capability, and R2, again, took things literally and decided that Force users must have extra cells or something. The midichlorians are a complete invention by R2 to help him explain the unexplainable.

Dumbledoore was a xanatos gambit level manipulator of everything. He wasnt evil, he was willing to sacrifice himself after all, but he had a plan for how to ensure the prophecy worked out in favor of harry and he made it happen. Every year at hogwarts was carefully arranged to create exactly the outcome we had.

There is no way the main staff of hogwarts could have created such lame traps and challenges to get through, so carefully tailored towards the skills harry and his friends "just happened" to have.

There is no way he never bothered to ask myrtle how she died, or figured out who the real heir of slytherin was.

Third year there is no way he didnt know sirius was in the castle. He has ghosts and elves, and talking paintings everywhere. He should have had no trouble tracking down sirius within 30 seconds of learning he had entered the castle.

Dont even get me started on 4th year. He had everyone involved with the tournament right there. It should have been childs play to either declare the tournament a draw, change the "challenges" to something they could do in 5 minutes to get it over with, or otherwise get harry out of competing.

5th year, he intentionally had a man he KNEW hated harrys guts tear through his mind so the visions would both happen more often, giving him more info, and would lead to a possession attempt, bringing his mothers protection into play.

6th year he finally got around to giving harry some of the vital info he needed and some clues for the rest. He then made sure through snape that draco would be the master of the elder wand. Someone harry could crush easily and thus unite the hallows. He knew that being the master of death was harrys best shot at returning after getting rid of his scar.

So yeah, the genial twinkly eyed wizard was a puppet master beyond compare, only his deathly terror at the idea of turning into grindelwald stopped him from being evil and seizing power for himself.

Gundam Victory isn't in the Universal Century. It was created before the concept of alternate universes allowed the meta-franchise to diverge from the then established canon to have giant mecha in the shape of windmills as God intended, but given Victory's contents having such little to do with its predecessors that it really should have been its own thing.

While the story of the UC shouldn't end happily, it's a deeply grey universe at the best of times. Rather it should end ambiguously, but with some optimism -- that's the underlying theme of its heroes. Victory Gundam is just horror and madness that suddenly abates, presumably to start up again when the next nonsensical space dictatorship decides to make a go at it and push everyone back into the charnel house of history.

I can't remember my favourite, but the one on top of my head that's basically makes too much sense is that the commonly mentioned theory that James Bond is a code name, used by multiple agents across generations.

Edit: More that I can remember from the top of my head.

In FFXIV, exist beings named primals. They're people's belief given form by the planet's living force. Each of beast races and some other have their own primals, which they consider their gods. Some primals doesn't take form of gods, but legendary heroes from the race's legends, like the moogle's primal which is the legendary first king of the moogle. They're super strong, and most importantly, they're not the actual legendary heroes. They're what the collective think the hero would be. So Primal King Mog's personality is what collectively the moogles thought how he'd act according to legends, Primal Bahamut's personality is more destructive than the actual legendary dragon Bahamut that's dead thousands of years ago, etc. They're usually summoned when the race faces some threats or invasion.

I like the headcanon that the main character, is Eorzea civilized race's collective primal. That's why he appears when the continent faces an apocalyptic threat, super powerful, resistant to other primal's influence, and have vague personality.

Also related, an existing person can transform into a primal. There's this character, Lady Iceheart, who can turn into Shiva and back into Iceheart, using the focused belief of her followers.

That means, in Dragon Ball Super, when Goku collect the surviving Saiyan's ki to turn into Super Saiyan God?

He's Saiyan Primal. Super Saiyan God is Saiyan Race's Primal. The reason why it's hardly ever summoned before, is because Saiyan Race is a bickering race that can never gather enough focused belief to summon a Super Saiyan God. But now that there's a small number of Saiyan Race, and they all are friends, they can summon the primal whenever needed.

    D&D:
*The magnificence and relevance of the city of Sigil is maintained entirely through belief=power. Cause and effect are reversed. People don't know about it because it's an important trade hub, it's an important trade hub because people know of it.

*The Lady of Pain's power is absolutely limited to within the borders of Sigil; she cannot directly effect anything beyond the borders nor even leave. Similarly, Lord AO has no influence outside of Realmspace

*The comparative adaptability of D&D's humans is a result of their extensive crossbreeding with supernatural creatures. A 100% fullblooded human would have none of the normal human racial bonuses. (compare the Church of the Subgenius' division of humanity into "subgenii" who have distant yeti and space alien heritage and "mediocretins" who do not)

*Yeenoghou is female, but is commonly mistaken for male due to the idiosyncrasies of hyaenid anatomy. People making this mistake is what fuels her insane rage.

*The demons could have won the blood war many times over (for example, Orcus could have desteoyed the Pact Primeval when he possessed Primus) but they chose to keep it going because they found it fun

    James Bond:
*James Bond Junior and the 1967 version of Casino Royale are part of the same continuity. The protagonist of the former is the agent who goes rogue in the latter.

*Speaking of the 1967 version of Casino Royale; James Bond is a code name and has over the years been assigned to multiple different agents.

    Quake:
*The game's titular unseen mastermind is a mask of nyarlathotep

    Middle Earth:
*The Arkenstone is one of the Silmarils

I've never liked this theory, largely because it doesn't fit the available evidence (which, I guess, is acceptable as far as "headcanon" goes, but not so much as a working theory) but also because it causes more issues than it solves, and robs the series of any of its already shaky character development and continuity.

To start with the obvious, if we assume that all Bond films are set in the year in which they're made, then M's rant to Bond in Goldeneye only makes sense if Bond had served the bulk of his active duty during the Cold War. But if Brosnan and Dalton are different Bonds, then there's actually only a maximum of two years, right at the end of the Cold War, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, when Brosnan's Bond can have been in service. The pre-credits sequence in the same film also depicts Brosnan as Bond in 1986, which would thus cause him to overlap with Dalton's entire visible stint as Bond. For Goldeneye to work, the Dalton and Brosnan Bonds at the very least must be the same character.

Then there is the lingering presence of Tracy. She only appears in one film, but is referenced as a ghost of Bond's past in For Your Eyes Only and Licence to Kill. Both those films, in which Bond is played by different actors, are revenge stories in which Bond is (in the former, visibly; in the latter, presumably) influenced by the death of his own wife. This doesn't make sense if the Bond who married Tracy was a different person from the ones in the later films.

And of course there are mentions of and allusions to Bond's family, most notably the gravestones at his family home in Skyfall, which demonstrate that his birth surname is actually Bond. And in the pre-credits sequence of Casino Royale it's clear that his name was Bond before he was promoted to 007.

If you watch the films in order, there is a clear continuity in the first six films, in which Bond gradually uncovers SPECTRE and its influence, moving higher up the food chain until he comes face to face with Blofeld himself. When taken off the case in Her Majesty's Secret Service he (played by a new actor) protests on the basis of his history with Blofeld. He then retreats to his office where he reminisces with some memorabilia from older cases - all from previous films. (There's a similar scene in Die Another Day too, for what that's worth). The personal confrontation that results between Bond and Blofeld (and then continues into Diamonds are Forever and For Your Eyes Only) makes much less sense and impact if these Bonds are all different characters. (Admittedly, there is a plot hole in OHMSS in that Blofeld apparently doesn't recognise Bond even though he's met him before. But given their history and that Bond was at least nominally disguised on both occasions, it's likely that Blofeld was simply bluffing about that).

Finally there's the question of what's going on with so many other characters. Bond isn't the only actor in the series whose appearance changes: Moneypenny, Q, Tanner, Felix and Blofeld all change appearance repeatedly, some with every appearance. None of these changes are explained or alluded to and the assumption is they're the same person each time (in some cases, it wouldn't make much sense if they weren't). In fact the only person who changes appearance with in-universe allusions to the fact is M, which is the one character identity we know to be a codename. (Q's real name is used once or twice throughout).

Even if we accept that the films are set in the year they are made (rather than shifting some of the early ones a few years to account for the advanced technology), assuming that Bond is in his early-mid 20s in Dr. No - in keeping with his age in the novels - that gives the original-continuity Bond a career of about forty years, which stretches credibility (remarkable for Bond films...) but is hardly unthinkable, and places him in his 50s during most of the Brosnan era. Given that screen actors routinely play characters of different ages to themselve, this is sufficiently close to the ages of the actors depicting him in the later films to be believable. The Craig films, meanwhile, are a universe reboot rather than a character one, the continued presence of Judi Dench notwithstanding (Craig's M was still at Station H in 1997, while Judi Dench's M had taken over as head of the service before 1995 in the original continuity).

There are, of course, still problems. Diamonds Are Forever in particular (which if we take the "films are in chronological order" approach as a rule, challenges the suggestion that each Bond actor is playing a different Bond right out of the gate) is a messy entry for several reasons. But ultimately this is because it's a long-running series with multiple creators that operates principally on rule of cool, so there are bound to be inconsistencies. Trying to make sense of them, especially without tying oneself in all sorts of knots, and especially when the films themselves treat these inconsistentices as jokes to make nods and winks at, is probably a waste of time.

I realise of course that it's a little hypocritical of me to complain that this theory doesn't take into account features of the series while admitting that on occasion I'm happy to discard entire instalments in a series to fit my own preferences*, but it's something I see a lot, often presented as "mind-blowing" or "makes so much sense!" when I don't think it is or does. Assuming it was thought up by someone who was actually something of a fan of the series rather than someone who doesn't really like the films but hasn't been able to avoid them (and I hear it more often from the latter) it's a fairly typical nerd theory in that it focuses on trying to resolve an insignificant issue resulting from media convention, while completely missing the bigger picture and much of the content of the series itself. It's a superficial and problematic solution to a superficial and very minor problem.

*Although this is related to my overall problems with "canon" as a concept as it relates to fictional media. Inevitably it tends to come down to "is this material canonical?" rather than "is this material any good?" Discarding poor instalments or elements of a series because they're terrible seems to me to make rather more sense than discarding qualitative elements because they're not strictly speaking "official" or "canonical", and vice versa. It's worth remembering too I think the original context of "canon", which was where people took a bunch of established works - of which they were not themselves the authors - and included or excluded them from a canon largely based on the quality of the works themselves. (Consistency was, apparently, a secondary concern). Different groups have looked at the same sequence of works and come to different conclusions about what is and isn't canonical, resulting in multiple canons. The idea that there must be one single canon and that it's largely based on whether or not it was produced under the correct copyright by the right company and/or the original creator of the concept seems to run counter to the whole idea, and strikes me as another example of nerd culture largely missing the point.

Ross never says Rachel's name at the altar. He marries Emily like he should, Rachel ends up with someobe else, they both are happily married, and we don't have another 5 seasons of Ross and Rachel relationship drama.

Or, if you want Ross and Rachel to end up together, they do in season 2, and we avoid EIGHT seasons of drama.

Supernatural ends at the end of season 5.

    Community ends at Season 4.
