My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

> Isn't this a show for little girls?

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

> Okay, fine. I'll give it a try. Where do I start?

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Well, I wasn't allowed to go to sleep at all last night, due to a special doctor check up a little later today. So how I kept myself awake was watching all the episodes of season 2, or atleast most of them last night. While watching, I realized that there are episodes are a different chronological order than what they actually showed, similar to how some episodes in season 1 were out of order. The signs were harder to tell, but they were there.

The one that caught my attention the most was (I think) the spike greed one. Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy both grab Rarity's ruined cape from the water to catch something. While flying, Fluttershy starts to fall behind but then glances at Rainbow dash and then proceeds to fly faster and harder, similar to the Hurricane Fluttershy episode that appears 10+ episodes later.

I know there were others, but I can't think of any now.

She didn't come even as close to success as either Nightmare Moon or Discord. And yet, even without going into the changeling groups on dA or the drawfriends on EqD, I am pretty sure I've seen more fanart of her in the last week than of either of those others since their debuts.

Why does this fandom seem so fascinated with Chrysalis? She is explicitly a villain who gains in power as she is the object of love. She didn't come even as close to success as either Nightmare Moon or Discord. And yet, even without going into the changeling groups on dA or the drawfriends on EqD, I am pretty sure I've seen more fanart of her in the last week than of either of those others since their debuts.

First, she has a unique, intimidating, and alien design, that'd explain much of the art. Second, she is a true villain, the third credible threat to Equestria (unless I'm forgetting someone) after Nightmare Moon and Discord, and unlike the latter she's as serious and threatening as some G1 villains were (not to mention she's smart, charismatic, etc). Of course, your mileage may vary, but all in all, she was a very pleasant surprise for the fanbase.

Successful? Chrysalis came within one application of Cutie Mark to occupying all of Equestria, going against ancient McGuffins, millennia old sorceresses, and entire Canterlot military. Compared to that, Nightmare Moon lost to 6 teenagers after ruling old, ruined castle for 10 minutes (and if they failed, we don't even know if she would have been capable of defeating Celestia supported by army). Awesome voice and design, though. Discord? Was an idiot who basically ignored multiple cues he is about to lose, or didn't do any of two dozen simple things that would have granted him instant victory. Had he been voiced by someone unknown, he would have been rated worst villain of whole of MLP, IMHO.

But most important thing? She is Kathleen Barr

And yet, even without going into the changeling groups on dA or the drawfriends on EqD, I am pretty sure I've seen more fanart of her in the last week than of either of those others since their debuts.

For me there's a few reasons. First, and probably best, is that she's easily the most evil of the three villains we've seen. Nightmare Moon was acting entirely out of jealousy. Discord's too obsessed with having his fun. Chrysalis? She's a creature who feeds on love. It's in her nature to kidnap those you love and replace them. Her motivation for being evil is that it's an inherent trait of changelings, which the other two were more just their personality.

Second, as has already been mentioned, is her character design. This is closer to the type of villain everyone thought Discord was going to be when we first heard about him. Pony insects are just creepy. I also loved the way they handled her movement, she's like Rainbow Dash in that she rarely walks. Instead she keeps buzzing around every few feet, and even when she's walking if her wings are out they're flapping.

Third is her appearance. I went into this episode expecting something closer to Best Night Ever. Instead I got a new villain who commands her own army. That and the big reveal for her was SO. AWESOME.

Chrysalis is popular because of awesome design, awesome voicework, awesome-ish storyline, and general villainy epicness. More importantly, she is something new that combines all of the above, so it's small wonder she's so prevalent in art and things at this point. Once the novelty wears off (I give it a month), she'll fall in line with the rest of the cast.

Also, I believe we're currently out of the bar outside of time, so conventional physics and causality are back in effect... for those around here who actually care about conventional physics and causality.
