MLP: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

> Isn't this a show for little girls?

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

> Okay, fine. I'll give it a try. Where do I start?

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

All in good fun! If it's not your cup of tea, skim it, but this show has triggered a great creative outpouring from the Internet. Pony themed fan-art is abundant and often excellent. See below for some examples.

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

That's certainly one way to look at it, but maybe not a very accurate one. I mean, look at the casualties section of the English Civil War Wikipedia article, particlarly the last estimate included. Also after some independent research, it seems that I am peculiarly "blessed" with stupid people, because only the folks of my middle school, high school, and completely unrelated sub groups from Southern California made that weird Union Jack/confederate flag association, and only then because a lot of southerly folks use the Union Jack instead of the conflag because... No idea.

Canberra is wonderful. Tell them to visit Weston Park in Deakin, Mt Rogers in Melba and the Cooleman Ridge Nature Reserve. They're my three favourite spots, and they're a bit out of the way so you probably wouldn't see them unless you were looking.

I enjoyed well enough. Fairly typical "they neglected me so now they will punish" stuff, though it's also pretty obvious that Sombra is pretty far from the right of it. And there's also the original princess of the crystal empire, along with a possible between-the-lines explanation for Cadence's origin. It's nothing amazing, but I like having a slightly-more-canon explanation for Sombra's backstory.

It's a running theme in my reviews. Pinkie Pie has a tendency to be written to be INCREDIBLY over-the-top with her silliness, and it gets to the point in certain episodes where she just says completely stupid random thing to be completely random. It gets very annoying when it doesn't even seem to be relevant to anything. This is countered in episode where she is the main focus of the episode. It has also been very prominent in recent seasons.

In Rainbow Rocks her humor was written perfectly. Her comments were relevant to what was going on, and her visual gags were great. Nothing beats her chomping on cookies while the mane6 hold hands, trying to blast the sirens (unsuccessfully).

Also, I've watched and/or listened to that movie way to many times. I could probably quote it all at this point.

Are you talking about when she drinks Discord's chocolate milk and complains about no whipped cream? Or about when she says the musical tickets Rarity has brought them were a paper fan, and says "This trip was worth already! I love jumping up and down!" Anyway, I like the way Pinkie Pie says silly random things most of the time, and also how she can take the important issues seriously, but still doesn't lose all her humor while paying attention to those. And I'd definitely like to see more of Pinkie Pie. I'd like to get at least one Pinkie Pie in every episode, and a second Pinkie Pie in every other episode.

That's kind of neat. I know the lyrics to about half the songs... maybe could recall some dialog. No where near your level though. Think my daughter has me beat there too.

So, before I disappear into War for the Overworld (typical, you wait for ywars and years for a game, and then two come along at once), I thought I should just relate. Today, we went out to Bolsover Castle, which, while interesting enough in it's own right¹, remains the last working Horse Range in the UK (which is basically an indoor riding school). They happened to be putting on a display of the sort of horsey-techniques that the chap whose home it was (Sir William Cavendish - a chap contemporary with that English Civil War we were brushing on last thread) taught. In particular, a one-post/pole/pillar (I forget the technical term, sorry) system as opposed to the two-post/pole/pillar system in use at the time. (He was also very down on the people who claimed to be mastered how beat/threw stones at their horses to get them to behave. Gently and speak softly, was his mantra.)

It was very interesting stuff. I've never seen a horse sort of prance sideways like that before. (Or one so keen to prance - the older one of the pair clearly knew he was here to show off...! He reminded me of Sparhawk's horse, Faren, I think, in the Elenium, who, whenever Sparhawk gets all armoured up and goes into or out of the city, starts prancing along of his own accord just to show off.) Not something we've seen anypony do in MLP. They also did a bit of where the horse rears up (like in Every Sculture of a Dude On Horseback Ever) which also has a technical term that I've forgotten because whoops. (I'd have liked to try and take some photos, but you can't, for health and safety reasons (of the horses and riders).)

Fascinating stuff.

Made me think that "pole dancing" in Equestria would actually be an ENTIRELY different thing to what it is to humans - more sort of like a truly Equine ballet (as in, no a pony doing human ballet, but a pony doing pony ballet).

Food for thought.

¹Basically, it was a bit of a smallish posh gentleman's playhouse. A castle based around the theme of love, apparently, with a nice circular garden with some niches in the walls that could be screened off for, as it said, romantic trysts, for example. His bedroom (I noted, his bedroom, not his and his wife's bedroom...) had two "closets" larger than my room, one of which had a small balcony, and both whose ceilings were covered in a patheon (nearly literally) of mythological figures. I'm not sure whether Rarity would have approved or been aghast...

It had a couple of paintings in part of the wall decor that I had to look twice at to realise that they were, in fact, flat paintings and not, in fact, a relief that had been painted. That's what I call proper artistry.

Though I think I personally wasn't quite so impressed with the paintings of naked young ladies adorning the room just off basically the great hall room (the Star Chamber, which ones suspects Luna and Twilight would have liked), which was covered in red drapery, making me wonder exactly what that room was used for and suspecting I knew...

That does sound really interesting, and he certainly had the right idea regarding animals.

Also we've seen Rarity's sense of style when it goes out of control. She'd approve, 100%
