Random Rules for a Random Banter
    waaaait for it.......
    1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

    2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

    3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

    4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

    5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

    6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

    7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

    8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

    9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

    10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

    11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

    12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

    13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

    14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

    15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Well? What are you waiting for? Get chattering already!

IIRC, the original use of that phrase was some weird show called the "Rap Rat" when he pops his head out of a block of cheese.

What kinds of things do we sacrifice to an online artist anyway? Burning good art paper is easy for an offline one. Do we have to burn a good graphics card?

Hey, new thread smell! I'd join in on discussions and stuff and replying to people from the thread yonder, but I feel horribly ill. So I'm just popping in to have been here a moment. If anyone needs me I'll be in some various corner, likely comatose. *wave* Here's to hoping I feel better today.

Well I'm furious at one of my professors. I got my first 0% on a quiz. Why? Not because I didn't know anything. No, I had all correct answers and valid solutions. No, to the best of my understanding, he didn't count it as showing work because I didn't use the same solution as he did.

If you did show the work in some way, I would talk to him about it. Either you will find out that is not the reason, or you may get to improve a grade. From my experience, talking to someone about it is the best way to handle it. Your method clearly worked. Also, I strongly dislike people who believe their way is the only way, eslecially since there is usually another way.

Edit: I completely agree with LaZodiac on this.

I'm starting by just talking to him about it. Explaining that I did show all of my work and what my methodology was. Also owning up to the fact that I did have one mistake in notation. I forgot to say I was taking the variance given some variables, but that should have been inferrable from context.

EDIT: Also, I'm not mad about the reasoning, oddly enough. Although you can be sure I'm giving a very negative evaluation at the end of the semester. I'm more mad that he took off so many points.

In actuarial science and mathematical statistics, the method by which you got your answer is frequently more important than the answer itself. However, if you can explain your reasoning behind your method, you really should be getting some points at least.

Although if you got to the real answers, you must be doing something right. Maybe he just wanted to make a point about the methods to use. Or something equally idiotic.

The same goes for computer science, really. If your solution scales too poorly, or fails to follow established coding conventions, it may be failed per default even if it reaches the correct answer.

For instance, we have one professor right now who fails you on the course if you on two separate occations forget to document but a single loop variant. Or accidently name one of the handin files incorrectly. But then again, he seriously doesn't have enough time to deal with the overhead of renaming a huge bunch of files to be able to run their test scripts on them, and he hasn't been anything but clear about what the rules are.

If you got the correct answerz, you should have gotten at least partial credit. Please tell me if you do fogure out what was wrong. I really want to know why someone marked off so many points for it.

It was about predicting time series. On one question, I solved it exactly correctly, I just "eyeballed" the prediction equation. To me, at least, it's a simple enough expected value that I shouldn't need to say I'm taking one. If it's a linear sum of past terms and error terms, I think it's fairly obvious that to predict it, you just plug predicted/observed values into the recursion and assume future errors are 0.

The other one was finding the width of a two-period prediction interval. Except instead of working with the error two periods from now, I used the actual time series. So I used that same recursive logic to find the predicted value in terms of errors and observed values. (I.e. things with known variance) Then I just used the usual sum of variance formula, with V(ε) as the estimate value we were given and V(observed value) as 0.

On a happier note, I think I found the two most obvious statements I've made in math classes recently.

    • If a=b, then a=b
    • V(X|X) = 0

Yeah, in easier cases it's possible to see what the answer "should" be. And it's tempting to just give it

But I imagine that the point is to use the standard methods for the easy stuff, so that when the more difficult stuff comes around, it is already ingrained. You won't be able to do the same with a time series with a weird cyclical trend, or with non-zero future error terms, or whatever. I've always found it useful to state your assumptions at least generally, like

Assume future trends follow past experience, and
Assume future expected deviation is zero

    and so on.

Might sound obvious, but sometimes it's what they want.

On a happier note, I think I found the two most obvious statements I've made in math classes recently.

    • If a=b, then a=b
    • V(X|X) = 0
Both of these statements fills me with an immense satisfaction

Part of the problem is that I'm very much used to recursion at this point. My logic: Any given term is just a sum (because we're only doing ARMA right now). The expected value of a sum is the sum of expected values. All the terms are either constants, errors, or previous terms. Constants stay, well, constant. Errors we assume are 0. Previous terms are either other predicted values or observed values.

I won't deny that there might be cases where that doesn't work. But this is definitely a time where I'd need to see one to get why.

Both of these statements fills me with an immense satisfaction
    Context:

If a=b, then a=b: I was attempting to see if the first n moments can uniquely define a set of n elements. This was the base case for n=1.

    V(X|X) = 0: In that second time series question, I wound up with V(Y_T | Y_1, ..., Y_T).

I live in the cheaper suburbs, so no one really has their own driveways to shovel as we're all cramped in these blocks of flats. I kinda miss and don't miss doing it - I just have some really fond memories of doing it with dad when I was a kid, back when we lived in the countryside. If I could, I would join you! And then we'd make a snow castle and shoot enemies from there.

Why do people assume 1337-speech is read purely left-to-right, and that 7 represents T.

Neither of those things are true. 7 represents L. "L337" means "LEEL," "LELE," "ELEL" and "ELLE," none of which mean anything. 1337 means LEET, but if read purely from left-to-right, while otherwise doing the proper decoding, would technically be TEEL.

I don't know why I brought this up.
