Neorice art thread (pixelart, props, art)
Yo!
I've had a comic thread up in fancomics in the past and in webcomics for a while now, but I've considered just making a thread for general art, sprites and stuff to just post random things whenever I want.
I'll probably post a lot of comic-related things here as well, as there's tons of sprites and art related to it that I never ended up using/would like C&C on before I use it.
Either way, I want to get this thread started with something simple;
1. These are a bunch of props I made recently as background items and decoration in my comic;
Although I don't think a lot of you work with pixels, if you've got any use for these props, feel free to use them in your own work. (credits or a small link would be nice, if you do)
Furthermore, as I really want to increase the size of my own prop database; I'd like to hear suggestions for some good medieval props I could make to add to these.
(hint: if you can actually use props like these, it's okay to just state what medieval props you could use yourself )
I'll post some more art in here soon, maybe some tutorials on how to do certain things (if anyone has any specifics things they'd like to see a tutorial on, feel free to say so as well)
Peace out, apologies for the text-heavy yet low-on-art thread.

Re: Neorice art thread (pixelart, props, art)
Now that you mention it, I could do with a tutorial/advice on drawing hair on sprites. I always seem to mess that up.

Any particular type of hair that you have trouble with? Or just a more general tutorial that explains 3-4 different styles?

Re: Neorice art thread (pixelart, props, art)
Thanks! It was pretty well recieved on DA, so I might do more pixel-tutorials in the future.
Another little art update:
I've been wanting to go into a certain direction with my comic backgrounds for a long time, so I sat down to really try and get the style I wanted to do out of me.
The result is this: (WIP)
I'm actually pretty satisfied with it, the distant trees really came out the way I wanted.
(the image isn't a spoiler of sorts btw, I just took two random sprites from my workfile)Last edited by Neoriceisgood; 2011-01-31 at 11:01 AM.

That background picture is very, very good. You're really doing something with the light on and among those trees

Re: Neorice art thread (pixelart, props, art)
Thanks guys, glad you like it.
Man, most of the stuff I draw in a week is kinda secret-ish, like future characters that haven't been revealed yet ...
Thankfully I redid a character I've already shown today, so I've got something I can actually show.
Included his old sprites to give an idea of the actual changes/improvements.
Might post some other props/art later today as well, we'll see.Last edited by Neoriceisgood; 2011-02-05 at 07:09 AM.

Re: Neorice art thread (pixelart, props, art)
Haha. I used to do the same - the CHALLENGE cured me of that habit quickly
Or just throw up sneak peaks! Those are always cool!
As for mr. Evil there, he's gotten a LOT better. I like how there's increasing depth and three-dimensionality in every incarnation. And I'm impressed by the amount of detail you can squeeze out of those few pixels.
Looking forward to more props/art/stuff from you!Spoiler

Re: Neorice art thread (pixelart, props, art)
Hahah yeah, I actually decided to join the Challenge mostly to remind me that I might want to show some stuff online from time to time.
I have soo much stuff I have lying around thats gotten outdated before I ever got to show anyone, I really need to show people what I'm doing more.

Truth to be told, I try to make more average people in my comic intentionally plain looking for as far as I can just to make the really really important/regal guys clearly that, it's much more interesting that way.
Looking forward to more props/art/stuff from you!
On the note of sprites/props etc, I kinda feel like I should sprite something from another webcomic again (I did the OOTS cast ages ago); I wonder which one though.
Help me pick from the following:
Goblins, Gunnerkrigg, Girl Genius, OOTS or Dominic Deegan?
I'll do a bunch of chars from one of em.Last edited by Neoriceisgood; 2011-02-05 at 12:55 PM.

Re: Neorice art thread (pixelart, props, art)
Phew... why not all of them?
(Personally i'd like to see OotS, really. The style is simple enough to allow for quite some variety.)
Or hey, maybe make some GenGame characters if you have the extra time. I wouldn't mind.

I'm not familiar with Gengame, I clicked the link in your sig ..but I think it'd require more investigation than I'd want to put into it.
Mind quickly telling me what exactly it is?

Re: Neorice art thread (pixelart, props, art)
Gengame an interactive webcommic (poster give commands about what should happen next /what the characters should do next, the authors choose one or a couple and get the storry going from here), heavily inspired by Ms paint adventures, drawn by Domochevsky and (ex ?) co scenarized by Agent Paper.
Pretty fun read too, even if there's ins't much.
I'd like to see how momething from Girlgenius would look in your style (I say, do the Jaegers and Othar)Last edited by smuchmuch; 2011-02-05 at 03:33 PM.

Re: Neorice art thread (pixelart, props, art)
N-not much? >_>
Weeelll... BH, SM and MG are the primary characters, with BH being the primary player character (sorta), so she's probably the best candidate. Any of them are fine though.
(In fact, SM (with her squire CB) is the one currently being focused on.)
As far as OotS characters go i'm kinda interested in a Roy impression. Possibly Haley too.Last edited by Domochevsky; 2011-02-05 at 04:17 PM.

Re: Neorice art thread (pixelart, props, art)
Thanks for the nice comments everyone! :)
Next up a little something I started ages ago but never really did anything with, decided to clean it up and post;
I've always been a bit jealous of how a lot of other templated styles (OOTS, A Modest Destiny) make it relatively easy for people to emulate the style/use a base to copy/mimic the style, which allows people to do their own characters in the style and similar things.
I've looked into making a template of sorts based on the more basic characters in my comic, but can't help but feel that the fairly high level of shading works against this idea really working as well as I had hoped ...
either way, here's a small set of things I have done as a template.

Re: Neorice art thread (pixelart, props, art)
Pretty nifty.
Left one looks kinda plain (in a unmemorable way).
Middle one is pretty. Kinda sexy too.
Right one looks funkeh!
