What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
So my kid sister has been trying to explain to me what seems to be some sort of fad... um... thing, called a "fidget spinner". The most confusing part is that it's as if she assumes I'll know what the heck one is. Anyone here happen to know? All I can puzzle out is that they're triangular... and presumably spin, perhaps.

Re: What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
My mom's boyfriend's kids were over for the weekend, and his daughter has one of these. It takes practically nothing to get them spinning like a high-powered rotor blade, so I can see why they've caught on. They're just really neat to watch in action, and it seems really satisfying to use.
I do not think the way you think. If you try to apply your own mindset to the things I say, there will be miscommunications. If something I say seems odd to you or feels like it's missing steps, ask for clarification. I'm not some unreasonable, unknowable entity beyond your mortal comprehension, I'm just autistic and have memory problems.

Re: What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
I work for a place that sells the blasted things. When we can keep them in stock.
If you don't understand why they're popular, I advise you to avoid thinking too hard about it. Compare them to stuff like yo-yos, wash off tattoos, snap-on and/or rubber bracelets, beanie babies, baseball cards, pez dispensers, and anything bedazzled. Even just plain tops work as well, let alone novelty battle tops that might be even closer. You spin them. They come in different colors and styles. That's it.
Yes, I'm aware there's some claims that there good for certain people with certain kinds of disorders or tendencies. Yes, those disorders and tendencies are serious and finding ways to work with them is important. No, I think most of the people buying them just want the popular Tickle-Me-Emo/Furby/What Have You. Heck, (incoming anecdote) most of the people I sell them to don't even know what they're named and just ask for "Those spinny things.""Okay, so I'm going to quick draw and dual wield these one-pound caltrops as improvised weapons..."

"Oh, hey, look! Blue Eyes Black Lotus!" "Wait what, do you sacrifice a mana to the... Does it like, summon a... What would that card even do!?" "Oh, it's got a four-energy attack. Completely unviable in actual play, so don't worry about it."

Re: What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
From what i understand they where designed for kids with ADHD and they seemed to work, though the originals where far simpler and didnt have lights. Now they've turned into this horrid abomination and are getting banned from classrooms, to the detriment of the kids who actually needed the blasted things.
If you can't tell im a tad annoyed about the whole thing.

Re: What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
Something that 25 years ago my father really wished existed. I drove him nuts in the need for stuff like this.
As someone who to this day fidgets (or toe dances, of knee bounces, etc etc) near constantly I totally get the concept. I just think they have become a novelty item like POGs or the like.
One key feature with the early ones is that they were less distracting for other people than the things the person using it would get up without it (like taking apart furniture, humming, pencil or toe tapping etc). The newer sparkly ones with lights? More distracting.

Re: What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
They were meant to be something for people who would constantly fidget, hence the name, but they ended up as a fad and therefore the people who actually needed them tended to be disallowed them in classes by extension of that fact. Which is a pity, because they seem to work really well for some people

Re: What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
The major judgement here is the fact that fidget spinners and fidget cubes were designed for people who fidget and need to take their mind off of it to something else, hence making it easier for them to focus. But now it's spread to the point where people - dominantly children - use them as toys taking the attention away, getting them banned which affects those who actually benefit from them.

Re: What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
You hold it between the thumb and middle finger of your other hand as you write, or read. Your fingers unconsciously guiding the soft curves around in regular motions, one undulation after another. Every once in a while you give it a sharp flick to set it spinning for a minute or two; gyroscopic forces subtly resisting the movement of your hand as quiet white noise blends with the sound of your own breathing. As you concentrate on the disembodied, abstract task at hand, it reminds you, reassuringly, that you still have a body, you can still act and be acted upon. Sensation acting as an anchor to the world; it keeps the animal in your head from screaming while you are busy being a computer.
Of course this cannot be allowed."The error is to be human"

Re: What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
*Shrug* That's free market for you. Doesn't matter who a product was designed for, it matters who actually wants to buy it.
It's not like this thing is a presctiption drug. And at least nobody is driving off the road because he was busy playing with it, like it happeend with, say, Pokemon GO.
It's a completely innocuous fad.

I'm just relieved it's that, and not what I thought it was going to be.

Re: What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
I've been thinking about that point, and- in an ugly sense- I kinda want to think it's good that they became popular? Given their alleged intended use, they really easily could have been branded with a derogatory nickname and become a symbol to bully and tease people for owning. And not that there's ever a good reason to bully someone, but that kind of thing is not something that's okay for which to bully someone. Just... Lame we couldn't hit the happy medium where it was okay to have them and not go crazy over them.
I beg you not to challenge the general public. It would surprise me if there hasn't been someone that got in a vehicular accident and tried to blame it on a spinner.
I saw that typo before I went to bed, thought about fixing it, and said, "Nah, it's better that way.""Okay, so I'm going to quick draw and dual wield these one-pound caltrops as improvised weapons..."

Re: What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
Personally I don't get the spinners. As an inveterate fidgetter, I want to get one of the cubes - I think it'll help me quite a bit - but the spinners do nothing special for me.

Re: What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
Oh I really dislike the cubes because they make irregular clicky noises. Drives me mad waiting for the next sound. My challenge with the spinners is to get them running as smoothly and evenly as possible, never speeding up or slowing down... and I just like the way they sit in my hand. It's comfortable. Symmetrical. Stops me panicking.

Re: What the hecks is a "fidget spinner"?
Man, I never know what the hot new thing is. I first learned about Pokemon when I walked in on my first day of First Grade and everyone had Pokemon cards and Pokemon backpacks and shirts and stuff. For those of you who weren't kids in the mid-nineties, there was a time where if you didn't have Pokemon cards then you might as well have just branded an L on your head because you were the scum of the earth. Day one of school and I was already a loser. Sigh...
